Graduation: Bittersweet
Graylyn Roose n Contributor
s the last year under the quarter system comes to a close and I prepare for graduation along with the rest of the Scripps senior class, I keep looking back on some of the things Ill miss most about the place on campus that feels like home after four years. Im probably not alone when I say that Im really going to miss studying and hanging out near the amphitheater behind Scripps. As spring quarter goes on, more and more students and faculty take advantage of the nice weather and spend their afternoons laying out and listening to music on the grassy hill. Its no secret that OU is known for its scenic campus, but I think Scripps backyard is one of the prettiest spots in town. Im really going to miss my Thursday afternoons giving tours to prospective students inside Scripps, and across College Green at the RTV building. I became a Scripps Ambassador last year and have really enjoyed getting to know possible incoming freshmen. It doesnt seem like that long ago that I was taking a tour through Scripps for the first time myself. I chose Scripps because I had such a positive experience when I met with a student and faculty member for the first time and I like that Ive been able to give back and (hopefully) help some of the high schoolers choose our program. Looking back, Ive been involved in several different organizations within the college, but my experience with SPJ has been one of the best. From gathering to cont. on Page 2

Kaylyn Hlavaty n Reporter
or local radio station and online publication, ACRN, its that time of year, once again, to plan their annual, three-day music filled fest on South Green. Lobsterfest is known to have an array of both local and regional bands. As a result, fans have the opportunity to jam with familiar music while being introduced to new local bands. Starting May 31 and lasting until June 2, each band will perform on a different day throughout the festival, depending on the lineup. The shows will be at three different locations including The Union at 22 West Union St., Casa Nueva at 6 W. State St., Dragons Cup at 19 South Court St. and South Greens Beach. Past performers include bands such as The Sidekicks, Southeast Engine and Kevin Devine. This years lineup will feature approximately 20 local and regional bands. It will include; Mindy Braasch, Vagrant Beat, Fat History Month, Pigeonholes, Difficult Dogs, Whirl, Brothertiger, The Kyle Sowashes, Indigo Wild, Lazer Babez, She Bears, To Be Determined, Moms Weekend, Emily and the Complexes, Sign Off, Nurser, Blithe Field, Scubadog, Evolve and Cop Hugger. cludes headliners, Pujol and Xray Eyeballs. The two bands share a similar garage-punk style, yet, differ in regards to their level of experience and collaborations with other musicians. Pujol, a band from Tennessee, has released music from both Saddle Creek Records and with Jack White from the White Stripes record label. As a result, the crew has be able to capture the attention of Bonnaroo Festivals booking agents. Pujol is an up and coming bandHes a really cool headliner and we are excited to have him, Matt Beamer said, ACRNs Public Relations Director. Xray Eyeballs, on the other hand, is a coed garage rock band hailing from Brooklyn New York. The group has also released their most recent album, Splendor Squalor with canine records in addition to sharing the stage with the Black Lips and Dum Dum girls. Due to the extent of the student organizations event, Kory Kasler, ACRNs Lobsterfest promotions manager and Promo Director, said that planning for this festival takes a lot of preparation in order to schedule locations and times of each performance. We usually start about a

quarter in advanced because we have to wait for SAC funding and once that goes through, we can see the funds that we have to work with and start scheduling from there, Kasler said. The fest is free to those in attendance, something those involved with ACRN is something special that sets them apart from other events in the area. This is due to ACRNs goal to support local bands while providing an experience for its members and its audience. This festival is a great way to support the local music scene in Athens and see favorite performers for free. We have a variety of bands with each a distinct style for everyones taste, Beamer said. The third day of the music festival will take place on South Greens beach and will come to an end with headliners Xray Eyeballs and Pujol along with local bands, To Be Determined, Evolve, Scubadog, Sign Off, and Fat History Month. Its going to be a real goodtime because students have the chance to enjoy some good music outside. I think its cool how different styles of music are coming together for this one festival, Kasler said.v

cont. from Page 1 gether for bigger events like the Ohio Sunshine Summit or Battle of the Bands, to our weekly Thursday exec board meetings that wind up being the perfect end to my week, Im going to miss the people Ive met, the contacts Ive made and the things Ive learned. I came in as a magazine major and am graduating with a main focus on broadcast news. SPJ covered a wide range of topics and disciplines in the meetings that I attended early on, and it helped me clarify exactly which type of

journalism was best for me. And of course, Im going to miss working, hanging out and practically living at WOUB. Working there for four years taught me a lot about producing and reporting for radio and TV, but more than that, it taught me how to learn. As a freshman, fresh out of the student orientation signup meeting, it was hard to imagine being anything but confused. Faced with audio equipment Id never seen before, computer software Id never worked with

and even a writing style I wasnt used to, the learning curve was pretty steep. But thanks to the help of the faculty there and the upperclassmen who helped me slowly figure it all out, Im graduating with a pretty solid sense of what it takes to work as a TV and radio journalist. The particulars may be different at my first job, but the basics will be the same. WOUB taught me how to both learn from others and teach myself and I think thats one of the most valuable skills a recent grad can have. v

cont. from Page 1 His website, matthewkeys.net, exemplifies his dedication to social media platforms. By acessing his Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and LinkedIn pages, users are quickly engaged into vast amounts of digital content. The site also exhibits helpful tools to aspiring journalists, including a stepby-step guide on how to use Tumblr. Gina Mussio, the secretary of SPJ, said that the meeting will focus on Twitter and other forms of social media. She also added that Keys is the perfect person to discuss this subject matter with as she described him as a social media guru. This is a neat way to look at the changing landscape of journalism with social media, Mussio said. Social media for journalists is really helpful to get our work out there and knowing how to use it is essential. Keys has helped many journalists advance in their means of social media and will bring many useful tips, dos and donts, and suggestions to journalism students at Ohio University. Students can join in on the discussion in Scripps Hall room 114 at 5 p.m.v

Generally, language is not the biggest barrier but when you try to say something in native ways that would be hard. Whats the difference between studying Journalism in graduate school and studying it in undergraduate school? To me, there are more practices we did in undergraduate school, but when I was graduated students I feel like I learned more about Theory. What do you think the benefits of studying journalism have been? As a media person, I gained more responsibility to the society.
