SECTION 3.7: Implicit Differentiation So far weve taken derivatives of function with 1 variable in terms of another.

Sometimes, though, its not so easy to do that: EX:

x 2 + y 2 = 25

We can split this into 2 functions:

But try splitting:

x3 + y 3 = 6 xy

So when we differentiate functions like this, we use implicit differentiation. EX 1: Given x 2 + y 2 = 25 , find y using implicit differentiation

EX 2: EX: Given

x 3 + y 3 = 6 xy , find y.

EX 3: Find y if sin( x + y ) = y 2 cos( x)

EX 4: Find the equation of the tangent line of

EX 1: 2y + 3x = 5, differentiate by solving for y first, then use implicit differentiation

EX 2: x2 + 4y2 = 4, differentiate by solving for y first, then use implicit differentiation

EX 3: Find dy/dx given that y3 + y2 5y x2 = -4

EX 4: Find dy/dx given that 10xy + 3x2 = 4xy2

EX 5: Find dy/dx if

x+ y =9

EX 6: Find dy/dx given that 3x2y + 5xy + 3x = 7

EX 7: Determine the slope of the graph of 3(x2 + y2)2 = 100xy at the point (3, 1)
