FAQS ON CYBER CRIME

Q.1 What is cyber crime? A. Cyber refers to imaginary space, which is created when the electronic
devices communicate, like network of computers. Cyber crime refers to anything done in the cyber space with a criminal intent.

Q. 2 Where to register my complaint? A. You should contact your local police station directly to register complaint. Q.3 What details will I be asked to include in my complaint? A. You may need to provide the following possible information, along with an
application letter: Your name Your mailing address Your contact number Specific details on how the offence was committed, along with the names and addresses of suspects and any other relevant information necessary.

Q.4 What contents should be there in the application letter? A. Contents vary with respect to the type of fraud or crime faced by you. For
examples: Cyber Stalking: It is the most common kind of cyber crime happening in India and the victims report could contain the following information: Email/IM communications received Phone numbers of the obscene callers, if any Website address which contains the profile Screenshot or the webpage (to be saved and submitted in hard copy) Other important necessary information could be provided after consulting law enforcement agency. Note: Victims of Cyber Stalking often request webmaster to delete their Profile. Deleting the profile means the evidence is lost. So dont request to delete such profile. Password Hacking: When did you access your email account last? From where and which computer did you browse it? All information about email account e.g. date of birth entered, pin code entered and security question and the last password?

Q.5 What type of documents should be included in my application which can


be considered as proof or evidence in regard to my complaint? A. Every information which can be provided by you with proper documents can be included in the application letter and be considered as proof or evidence. Proof or Evidence may include the following: E-mail printouts Chat-room or newsgroup text or screenshots if taken by you Email printouts should contain full email header information Transaction acknowledgements or receipts Credit card records, transaction details and receipts Envelopes or letters received via post courier FAX copies Pamphlets or brochures (if you have received) Phone bills Printed or preferably electronic copies of web pages Keep the necessary information in a safe location; you will be required to provide them for investigation as and when required. Note: Proof or documents which will be part of the application are not restricted to the above list; additional information may be required depending on the nature of crime.

Q.6 What should I do if I lose my ATM cum Debit/Credit card or it is stolen? A. If you happen to lose your Card, report it immediately to the banks 24-hour
call centre. After reporting the loss, it will cause to immediately block all transactions and prevent any fraudulent transactions on your card.

Q.7 What to do in case of Credit card fraud? A. File a fraud report with local Police Station and provide them relevant
information regarding when and where you last used the card with transaction receipt.

Q.8 What should I do to protect my password? A. Password should be of alpha numeric and combination of special characters;
e.g. Cyrus11$HCL. It is a good practice to commit the password to memory rather than writing it down somewhere and it should be changed periodically.

Q.9 Q.9 What precaution should I take on social networking sites? A. Some precautions should be taken on social networking site as following:
Limit the amount of personal information you post. Use strong passwords Use precaution when post something about friends and family when practicing online social networking Use and maintain anti-virus software

Q.10 Q.10 What precaution should I take when using E-mail account? A. Some precautions should be taken when using E-mail account as following:
Dont open attachments unless you know who its coming from and you trust them. Avoid sending credit card numbers via e-mail Dont access your e-mail from an unsecured network or potentially compromised computers Dont access any link shown in your e-mail related to personal information and not trusted. Log out properly Never save passwords in browsers password manager

Q.11 Q.11 What precaution should I take in Cyber I? A. Precautions in Cyber Caf:
Delete the temporary files, cache, cookies: For doing this, go to the Internet Options on the Tools menu of the Internet Explorer or Clear Browsing Data in Chrome (that is available under settings). Delete the stored passwords Never store any password Always check the webpage address whether it is same as you typed in the address bar or changed to some other address. Check the computer for malicious software's e.g. key loggers etc.

Q.12 What precaution should I take while using ATM/Debit/Credit card for Q.12
Point of Sale (POS)? A. Precautions should be taken as : While making payment at POS always ensures that the card is swiped in your presence only. Do not share PIN or any security information related details with anyone. Always check Debit/credit card when returned after purchase. Insist for a copy of the receipt and retain it till the account statement is checked.

Q.13 How to prevent from Phishing Attacks in Internet Banking Operations? A.


Don't send personal information to anyone in an email. Don't give out your personal information over the telephone unless you are absolutely certain of who you are dealing with. Don't have other browsers open at the same time you are doing your Internet banking transactions. Don't open email from folks you don't do business with. If you ever get an

email from your bank asking you for personal information, call the bank first before doing anything else. Ask them about the email and find out what is going on. Do not click a link in an e-mail message and instant messages from strangers to access internet banking. It is recommended to type the URL yourself on the web-browser. Use secured webpages URL, i.e. URL should begin with https. Do not close the browser window directly, without logging-off completely from the banks website. Do not access Internet Banking account from a cyber cafe or a public computer. However, if user happens to do so change passwords from own computer. Do not leave Internet banking application session unattended. Always sign off from a session

Q.14 What precaution should I take while using ATM/Debit card? A. Precautions should be taken as :
Always keep card in your custody Sign on the back of the new card as soon as you get it. It is recommended that 3-digit CVV2 number present at the back of the ATM/debit card should be scratched to make it unreadable and memorized by the user. Cancel any unwanted or expired cards by contacting the card-issuer and cutting up the unwanted or expired card in at least two pieces. In case card is lost, immediately contact the concerned branch or customer care center to hot list user card, to avoid any misuse of card by anyone. It is recommended that mini-statements are regularly generated for reconciling/checking the transactions.

Precautions should be taken as :


Do not conduct any transaction on ATM, if you found the surroundings suspicious. Look out for suspicious devices on ATMs or pin pads. Do not accept help from strangers/guards and never allow yourself to be distracted Always ensure while doing transactions, no one is present around ATM machine. If there is anything unusual about the ATM machine, or there are signs of tampering of machine, do not use the ATM machine and report to Bank immediately. Use your body to block the view of user transaction. Especially while entering PIN and withdrawing the cash.

While paying the utility bills on ATM check the transactions details with the billed amount, customer ID on original bill. Keep the transaction slip safe so that it can be referred to if the paid amount appears as arrears in next billing cycle. Dont discard receipts and mini-statements or balance inquiry slips which contain important information. User gets a receipt every time user makes an ATM transaction. Tear up or preferably shred user cash machine receipt, mini-statement or balance enquiry when disposing them off. After completing transaction, remember to take your card back. If the ATM machine does not return the card, report its loss immediately to user Bank/branch on the numbers displayed in ATMs.
