Monroe Central High Graduation Set for May 19 at 7 p.m.


Monroe Central High School will graduate 78 seniors on Saturday, May 19, 2012. The graduation activities will begin at 7 p.m. at the Monroe Central football field in Woodsfield. In case of inclement weather, the graduation ceremony will be at 7 p.m. at Skyvue Elementarys gymnasium. Honor students who will participate in the graduation program include: Monroe Central academic valedictorian, Jackie Shreves; Monroe Central/Swiss Hills Career Center valedictorian, Darby Spires; salutatorian, Brianna Gauding; first honors, Jacob Ring; second honors, Kelsey Parks; third honors, Casey Digity; fourth honors, Kayley Stephens. Jackie Shreves is the daughter of Curtis Shreves and the late Darlene Knowlton. As a two-year member of the Monroe Central Drama Club, Jackie has held supporting and leading roles, along with directing two productions this year. This has earned her enough points to be inducted into the International Thespian Society. She has also been a member of the Quiz Bowl team, Art Club, Spanish Club and is a fouryear member of the Science Olympiad team receiving various awards at competitions. In her junior year, Jackie was inducted into the National Honor Society. This year she was honored as a four-year Kiwanis Scholar and she was chosen to be a Franklin B. Walter Scholar. Jackie has received the Land Grant Opportunity Scholarship, earning her full paid tuition to The Ohio State University, where she has been accepted into the Arts Scholars program and will pursue a major in English with plans to work in publishing. Darby Spires is the daughter of David and Lori Spires. She has attended the Monroe Central Academic Banquet both freshman and sophomore years and was on the honor roll throughout high school. She received first place in medical terminology for Skills USA at regionals and advanced to state competition. She has also attended the Kiwanis Scholarship Banquet and received the Beck Energy Scholarship. She is a member of the Medical Technologies program at Swiss Hills Career Center. She is a member of the National Technical Honor Society, Skills USA and has participated in multiple blood drives. In the future, Darby plans to attend Belmont Technical College to pursue a degree in the medical field. Brianna Gauding is the daughter of Rudy and Stephanie Gauding of Woodsfield. throughout her high school career. She is a four-year varsity letter winner in cheerleading and track and field. She has been awarded the UCA Leadership Award, was a PVC Scholar Athlete all four years and has been on the honor roll every nine weeks. She was a Monroe County Beacon Academic Achiever her freshman year, a subject award achiever her sophomore year, inducted into the National Honor Society her junior year and a Kiwanis Scholar her senior year. Because of her achievements, Brianna has received a scholarship from Monroe Soil and Water Conservation District, the Science and Medical Scholarship from Wetzel County Hospital and the Ohio Valley Community Credit Union Scholarship. Brianna has had the opportunity to attend many conferences and events. Her sophomore year she finished in the top 10 finalists of the Business Professionals of America at the state level and was a Hugh OBrian Ambassador. Her junior years she went to the Regional Scholars Conference and Buckeye Girls State. She is a member of Key Club, Dream Team, Ski Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and an active member in her church youth group. She plans to attend college in the fall to pursue her bachelors of science degree in nursing. Jacob Ring is the son of Marc and Helen Ring of Woodsfield. He is a Kiwanis Scholar, vice-president of the National Honor Society and has been invited to the Academic Achievers Banquet for Algebra II, American History and Spanish II. Jacob is also a PVC Scholar and served as Monroe Centrals Student Board Member this year. Jacob attended Buckeye Boys State this past summer. He was a threeyear letter winner in basketball and received the honor of District 12 Honorable Mention. Jacob also received two letters in football and one letter in soccer. He was his classs representative for Student Council for three years. Jacob is also in the Spanish Club, Art Club and the

Athletes. She is an active member of the First Baptist Church in Woodsfield. Her future plans are to attend Ohio University Eastern and then transfer to Ohio University Athens to pursue a degree in sports management. Kayley Stephens is the daughter of Dave and Kristal Stephens of Woodsfield. Her activities and awards are Key Club, Dream Team, honor roll and academic awards. She is a PVC Scholar Athlete and a member of the National Honor Society. She has been her class treasurer for four years. Kayley has lettered in basketball, track and volleyball. She was awarded hardest worker and All-OVAC Honorable Mention in basketball. In track she was PVC high jump champion her freshman and junior years and an OVAC qualifier in high jump three years. She was a regional qualifier on the 4x100 team and in high jump. Kayley is on the 4x200 and 4x400 teams that hold the school record and she holds and school record in high jump. Kayley was named PVC All-League in volleyball three years. She was named District 12 Honorable Mention as a sophomore, District 12 2nd team as a junior and District 12 1st team as a senior. She was named OVAC AllConference Team two years. She was named Best Defensive Player as a junior and Most Kills as a senior. She was selected to the All Times Leader team as a junior and named captain as a senior. Kayley was also named OVAC/AAA Player of the Year in volleyball her senior year. She participated in the District 12 All-Star game and the State All-Star volleyball game. Kayley plans to attend Ohio University Eastern to pursue a degree in secondary education. Class members will graduate in white and black gowns. The class is advised by Julie and Steven Casto and is led by the following class officers: co-presidents Elizabeth Casto and William Parden; covice-presidents Madison Bettinger and Nick Hays, co-treasurers Asia Prickett and Kimberly Dick; co-secretaries Kayley Stephens and Kayla Simmons. The graduating class has invited Ms. Jordan Blackstone to deliver the commencement address. Musical accompaniment will be performed by the Monroe Central Band with special guests Paula Frank and Andrew Emrick under the direction of Jack Skidmore. Jerry Calder, Monroe Central principal, will present the graduates their diplomas with assistance from Dave Matz and Janelle Comstock, members of the Switzerland of Ohio Board of Education. Additional members of the 2012 graduating class are shown beginning on page 5.

Dream Team. Jacobs future plans are to attend The Ohio State University to pursue a major in civil engineering. Kelsey Parks is the daughter of Dana and Kaye Parks of Marr. She is a PVC Scholar Athlete and an academic achiever. She is a member of the Dream Team, Art Club and is the vice-president of Key Club. She was a member of Business Professionals of America her sophomore year. Kelsey has represented her class on Student Council for three years. She is a Kiwanis Scholar. As a junior, Kelsey was inducted into the National Honor Society. She has been on the honor roll numerous times throughout high school. Her classmates elected her as sophomore attendant and she was elected on the Homecoming and Prom Court. She is a two-year letter winner in basketball and softball. Kelsey has been a member of the Monroe County Junior Fairboard for two years where she holds the office of secretary. For the past 10 years, she has been a member of the Bethel Country Kids 4-H Club and has taken market lambs and dairy feeders to the fair. She has received the Outstanding Knowledge Award several times. Kelsey received the Farm Bureau Scholarship and the Charles E. Fieok Scholarship. Casey Digity is daughter of Mike and Vicki Digity of Woodsfield. Casey is a member of the National Honor Society, a Kiwanis Scholar, a PVC Scholar Athlete, and a Monroe County Beacon Academic Achiever. For two years she has been the countys Americanism test winner and is an honor student. She also has attended the academic banquet all four years. Casey has participated and lettered in soccer four years, track for three years and is a letterman in basketball. She was selected to participate in the Eastern District and OVAC All-Star soccer games. She was voted Best All-Around for the senior class and was nominated a prom queen candidate on the 2012 Prom Court.
