uk Main Topics: Gaddafi and Libya, Israel Raid on Gaza, Space debris at critical level, Louisiana in state of emergency, England riots, Scottish phone-hacking scandal 1. Notes: A tropical storm of 35 miles per hour, which will be called Hurricane Lee if it gets any worse, is coming up the Gulf of Mexico, towards the southern coastal United States The governor of Louisiana declared a state of emergency...saying coastal and inland areas could be hit by flash floods in 48 hours. There are storm warnings from the Texas state line all the way to the eastern Mississippi coasts and beaches. Comments: When I saw the headline for this story, I assumed the worst. Hurricane Katrina hit the same spot, and was absolutely devastating, and I quickly guessed that this would be around the same magnitude. I was also slightly confused, feeling mixed up between this storm and Hurricane Irene, which, I was told, had dwindled away. 2. Notes: After weeks of silence, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi released two audio messages in a day. He claimed to be ready for a long, long drawn out war with the anti-Gaddafi forces, which are currently surrounding the make-shift Libyan capital Sirte. The loyalist propaganda broadcaster Al-Rai transmitted the messages from Gaddafi. Gaddafi's family has, since the Libyan insurrection, fleed to Algeria, where Gaddafi himself was denied refuge. Comments: I suppose when I read it I was surprised that Gaddafi was still alive. As far as I know, a lot of his Libyan subjects absolutely hated him when he was in power. I wasn't hoping for an announcement of his death, but I was anticipating it. Also in terms of only what I know, I am against Gaddafi and what his regime was. I'm not positive about Egypt's revolution, but that definitely sparked a needed one against a tyrant in Libya. 3. Notes: A couple of policemen in the Scottish police force were arrested at work. They were among the fourteen arrested relating to phone hacking. The as-of-now-defunct newspaper News of the World was being investigated as being behind hacking the cell phones of numerous individuals in order to get news, and two policemen were moderately involved. Comments: I have no pity for those who were arrested. Breaking into the privacy of others is one my biggest concerns about recent technology. Anyone can be hacked for information or mischief. Even if journalists or authorities are trying to make the world a better place, it is hypocritical to use illegal means to reach justice.
