SG System

A new glazing system for structural glazed facades and roofing

The versatile SR curtain wall and roof glazing system has been improved with additional system features that allow the installation of silicone bonded glass. The SG system eliminates the need for external pressure plates and capping profiles giving designers new aesthetic options. The SG system is suitable for vertical or sloped applications and, for the first time, allows architects and designers to incorporate much larger or multi-faceted areas of structural glazing into the building envelope.

System benefits include:

Narrow 14mm sealing joints. Invisible mechanical glass retention. Smooth interface with the building structure is possible through a series of adapters. Due to the high static values of the SR profiles, large spans can be achieved. All glazing permutations can be incorporated into the system. Excellent thermal performance with no water or condensation penetration. Glass units of up to 2.8M x 2.8M can be used. Multiple profile options are available from the versatile SR curtain walling system.

System Assembly 1. Support profiles are from the SR curtain walling range. Profiles should be selected according to the structural and aesthetical requirement. All profiles are available pre-galvanised, suitable for all types of paint finishes. The 3mm thick self-locating gasket provides an effective inner seal whilst cushioning the glass. The sealed units are supplied to site with the carrier profiles pre-bonded to the glass, which allow the mechanical connection of the units to the grid. Structural silicone bonds the carrier profile to the glass units.

10. Stainless steel fixing clips retain the glass carrier profile to the grid. 11. Stainless steel socket head screws fixed through fixing clips. 12. Foam backing rods fill the glazing cavity and further enhance the thermal insulation of the system . 13. Unobtrusive 14mm sealant joint sightlines. (System tolerances allow a 12mm minimum sightline in this area.) 14. Desiccant infill within spacer bar as required. 15. DGU butyl adhesive.

Mechanical safety Certain countries building regulations, require that structurally glazed constructions above 8M in height require an additional safety support to prevent glass detaching itself from the system in the event of a failure of the structural silicone. Although with todays silicone technology this is almost an impossibility, a simple brace can be incorporated into the system to mechanically retain the corners of the glass, where building regulations demand.

Glass unit assembly The insulating glass units would be supplied to site with the carrier profile pre-installed under factory controlled conditions. Grid construction Grid assembly and installation tolerances should be considered when planning the system. The profiles can be prefabricated and installed on site, or erected in stick format using shear blocks. For more information please refer to the SR curtain wall system literature. Gasket installation After assembly and installation of the grid construction, the gaskets can be cut and installed on site. All gasket intersection points should be additionally sealed using approved sealant. Ensure all areas are clean and free from damp or dirt before installation. Glass supports To assist installation and to reduce the stress on the fixings, the system has a slot-in glass support. The supports are supplied in a standard length and require cutting down to suit the glass that is being used. It is very important that the glazing blocks only support the glass part of the unit and do not affect the aluminium carrier profile. Glass supports are normally installed at transom quarter points.

System installation Installing the fixing clips The individual glass elements can be installed in any order. The glass elements are positioned onto the glass supports and fixed with the clips. The fixing clips should not exceed 400mm centres, with additional clips positioned at 50mm from the glass corners. The fixing clips are designed so that during installation, the clips will turn with the screw until it contacts the carrier profile. The clips will then self-locate on the grooved edges of the carrier, in order to achieve a secure fastening of the glass assembly. Sealing the glazing cavity Foam backing rods are available to fill the cavity and enhance the thermal performance of the system. These should be installed before sealing to give a front sealing depth of approx. 6-8mm. As a sealing material the sealant DC 797 should be used. This sealing agent will not effect the glass edge sealant, and when professionally applied will guarantee the performance of the seal. All areas to be bonded should be thoroughly cleaned and be free from any moisture or dirt. Adverse weather conditions and low temperatures below +5C will affect the performance of the sealant and should be avoided. Structure interface For the structural interface we can supply a specially designed thermally broken adapter profile. The adapter profile can be used for a multitude of interface details. The integral channel replaces the carrier profile on one side allowing the simultaneous installation of the glass with the adapter profile. The use of the adapter allows pressed metal sheets to be installed at the interfaces and give a sleek uninterrupted appearance with the sealing detail appearing the same as at the intermediate glass to glass joins.

Examples of structure interfaces

These examples are indicative only and the correct method should be designed to specifically suit the project.

Attention should be paid to the weather tightness of the connections and prevent any infiltration of water or humidity into the system.

Cold bridges should be avoided.

All system and structural movements should be considered allowing pressings to slide over each other.

Sound bridges can be avoided by the use of suitable material.

Connections at porous surfaces eg: plaster, should be protected from cracking by permanent elastic grooves.

Corner glazing, window and door connections Using the SR9090-3 profile in conjunction with the system adapters, aesthetically pleasing corner details can be achieved.

Integrated windows and doors Special connection profiles for windows and doors make it possible to choose from a selection of systems to smoothly integrate into the SG facade.

Multi-part connection profiles can be used to support the frame of the door/window. Like the adapter, these are fastened with the same fixing clip as the glass carrier profile. The connection profile should be chosen to suit the glass thickness in order to bring the door/window frame in line with the glass.
