St. Xavier's College, Mumbai bears testimony to a great historical adventure. Built into its masonry are the mingled emotions of the German Jesuits who came to India on a journey more than 150 years ago. Through its corridors, have passed a remarkable group of people who of course didn't know at that time that they were so remarkable. They formed the vanguard of an educated army of thousands launched upon the world over the years. They didn't just add colour but provided challenging opportunities for the all round development of their students. The Xavier Institute of Management and Research shares the Xavier legacy of great education wrapped in uncompromising value.

XIMR started as the St. Xavier's Social Institute of Industry in 1963. It was renamed as Xavier Institute of Management (XIM) in 1971, focused on working executives. Xavier Institute of Management was replaced by a new Institution, Xavier Institute of Management & Research (XIMR), Mumbai in July 2006 to meet the rising demand for executives with a global perspective as Indian companies increasingly sought growth beyond our borders. XIMR began with the two year full time Master of Management Studies (MMS) program of the University of Mumbai in August 2006.

XIMR Genesis

The college has produced scientists, writers, artists, thinkers and above all, leaders who have shaped the practice of Management in organizations across the world.

There can be nothing more precious than knowledge. It is a rigorous 9 am to 9 pm day. XIMR sets a challenging pace but believes that these two years are worth a lifetime.

Xavier's has high brand equity across India that can be leveraged. Alumni of Xavier's include eminent people in industry, legislation, civil services and every walk of life. This can be leveraged by XIMR.

At XIMR, we believe that a good human being makes an ethical business leader with entrepreneurial skills and an inspiring global vision.

Center for Africa Studies (CAS)

frica accounts for almost 15 percent of the total world population. The vast mineral and other natural resources, most of which are untapped, as well as 60 percent of the world's cultivable arable land provide immense growth opportunities for not just global markets but also Africa itself. The continent has witnessed a significant improvement in political stability and quality of governance along with economic growth which has been around 5 percent in the recent past. The ministry of commerce and industry expects the bilateral trade with Africa to double to $70 billion whereas the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India expect the trade to surpass $150 billion. In November 2009, the member states of the East African Community (EAC) - Burundi, Kenya,

Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda signed a common market protocol aimed at expanding the existing customs union to allow goods to freely move across the region. The bloc has an estimated population of 126.2 million and a gross domestic product of at least $60 billion. It aims to have a monetary union in 2012 to eventually transform into a political federation.

Centre for Africa Studies (CAS)

XIMR recognizes the emergence of Africa as the market of the future, and is perhaps the first B-School in India with a strategic focus on Africa. XIMR launched the Centre for Africa Studies in January 2011, in collaboration with Makerere University Business School (MUBS) the most prestigious Business School

12 | think XIMR think XCELLENCE

in East Africa. The Centre for Africa Studies took off with 25% of our First Year Batch (15 students) opting to pursue their Summer Internship with leading multinational companies in East Africa, countries of Kenya and Uganda, during May June 2011. The students pursued immersion studies, and conducted extensive surveys of consumers to develop a deeper insight into these markets. XIMR believes that the ability of

Indian companies to create and market innovative, low cost solutions for consumers in India, especially at the bottom of the pyramid is transferable to Africa with modifications for the different cultural contexts. Indian multinational therefore have both, Locationbased and Companybased strategic advantages in Africa. Similarly, there are many successful African companies whose business models can be transferred to India to provide innovative, low cost solutions. The Centre for Africa Studies

will be the catalyst to enable such transfer of business models leading to the social and economic development of both India and Africa. The Centre for Africa Studies will provide in depth, cultural, social and business analysis of Africa with a general management perspective. Finally, The Centre for Africa Studies supports India's strategic thrust on Africa as a central component of its foreign policy.
