History
On
February
12,
1912,
a
new
parish
was
created
in
Southeast
Portland
and
placed
in
the
care
of
the
Paulist
Fathers.
This
was
the
humble
beginning
of
St.
Philip
Neri
Catholic
Church.
In
the
early
part
of
the
20th
century,
St.
Philip
Neri
became
the
church
home
for
East
Portland
Italian
immigrants
and
their
families.
Many
of
these
families
dedicated
funds
and
hard
work
to
build
the
current
church
building.
It
was
designed
by
famed
architect
Pietro
Belluschi
and
dedicated
October
1950.
In
celebration
of
our
100-year
anniversary,
the
parish
is
planning
a
year-long
series
of
events
marking
the
founding
of
the
parish
and
the
Paulist
Fathers
presence
in
Portland.
The
celebration
begins
with
Archbishop
John
Vlazny
celebrating
the
4:00pm
Mass
on
Saturday,
May
26,
which
is
St.
Philip
Neris
Feast
Day
and
also
Pentecost
weekend.
Since
it
is
Pentecost
everyone
is
encouraged
to
wear
red.
A
reception
will
follow
in
Carvlin
Hall.

Donations
What
do
you
do
with
all
of
those
unsolicited
religious
items
like
medals,
rosaries,
note-pads,
blankets,
Holy
cards.......?
If
you
aren't
going
to
use
them---we
can
use
them
for
not
only
the
children
in
the
parish
but
for
people
facing
personal
challenges.
If
you
want
to
donate
them
to
the
parish,
please
bring
them
to
Mass
with
you
and
place
them
in
the
box
in
the
foyer
on
the
shelf
marked
"religious
items"----and
thank
you
for
sharing!

Today is the monthly parish Breakfast! Invite family and friends for all are welcome after the 8:30 and 10:30am Bulletin Announcements masses to gather for a delicious breakfast. Come and enjoy Must be submitted by 12pm Tuesday before target weekend best French toast you will ever eat. to angelical@stphilipneripdx.org
Once again this year, St. Philip Neri Parish will collaborate with Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon and the Interfaith Food and Farms Partnership. We will welcome James and Lee Xiong on the first and third Sundays of the Month after the 8:30 and 10:30 Masses. They will sell flowers and some vegetables. We will begin on June 3 and go through September or as long as there is a harvest. James and Lee and the staff of the Food and Farms Partnership have found surveys helpful to see what folks want to purchase at the farm stand. To this end we will have some survey posters up in the foyer of Church the weekend of May 20. Members of the Peace and Justice Commission will be on hand to assist. Your support is appreciated. Have you been panhandled? When someone approaches you and asks for money it is not wise to pull out your wallet and give them money. The best thing to do is offer them a Sisters of the Road coupon. The coupon allows them to eat at the non-profit restaurant at 133 NW 6th between Couch and Davis. Each coupon is worth the entre of the day, a side dish, a drink. The person may refuse ----but you have offered them a good meal. Our parish office will be selling the coupons for $2.00 e ach on the first weekend of the month in the vestibule after all the Masses. Purchase whatever you need. The coupons can also be purchased in the parish office during the week.
C.A.S.E. Cultural Academic Student Exchange (CASE) and place high school exchange students with host families in the Portland area. They have a student from Brazil who is very active in his Catholic church and youth group. He would like to come here for the 2012-13 school year. The CASE would like to place him with a Catholic family so that he has the opportunity to worship and participate in a youth group at a Catholic church. Please contact them if you or anyone is interested.
