INVENTIONS

1733 Flying Shuttle: http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blflyingshuttle.htm The flying shuttle was an invention that improved looms by enabling weavers to weave faster. It was invented by John Kay in 1733. The original flying shuttle had a bobbin onto which the weft yarn was wound. The flying shuttle revolutionized the textile industry in Great Britain for it greatly reduced the time it took to weave. John Kay was the twelfth child of a farmer and born on July 16, 1704. In 1753, his home was attacked and raided by angry textile workers who thought that his inventions would make it so that they were not needed at the textile factories anymore. Kays invention revolutionized textile production speed and also it helped pave the path for another invention along the road, the power loom. All of these inventions led down the line to the way we produce clothes today, much more time efficient and automated.

INVENTIONS

1764 Spinning Jenny: http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blspinningjenny.htm In 1764, A British carpenter and weaver, James Hargreaver, invented an improved Spinning Jenny, the first machine to improve upon the spinning wheel. The original spinning jenny used eight spindles instead of the one found on the spinning wheel. A single wheel on the spinning jenny controlled eight spindles which created a weave using eight threads spun from a corresponding set of rovings. Later models had up to 120 spindles. The sixteen spindle spinning Jenny was patented by Hargreaves on July 12, 1770. The Spinning Jenny was one of the inventions along the path of revolutionizing textile and clothing manufacturing. Todays modern textile industry would not be where it is if these inventions, including the spinning jenny, were not created.

INVENTIONS

1787 Water Powered Loom: http://www.saburchill.com/history/chapters/IR/012.html In 1787, the first water powered loom was created. This loom was created by an English man named Edmund Cartwright during the industrial revolution. He invented it in order to make weaving yarn or thread into fabrics a lot easier. By doing this, he ultimately made lives for many easier as they did not have to spin the loom manually anymore. This saved time from the daily lives of millions of people all over the world. Also, Cartwright also made the wholesale manufacture of cloth from ginned cotton possible. (Or cotton where the seeds had been separated from it.) The water powered loom was revolutionary because it used water to power it unlike the ones before it, where steam was used. Cartwright has affected many people, including me because he paved the way for mass production of clothes in society. Because people did not have to manually spin cloth anymore, cloth was easier to make and more people made it. Now, cloth is found mass produced and is how people like me get clothes.

INVENTIONS

1794 Cotton Gin: http://score.rims.k12.ca.us/score_lessons/cotton_gin/pages/reading.html In April 1794, a man by the name Eli Whitney patented the first cotton gin in Massachusetts. Because of the cotton gin; America was able to mass produce cotton. Cotton at the time was very hard to make a living off of for some because it was very tedious and the removal of the seeds could take countless hours. By inventing the cotton gin, Whitney was able to make easy removal of seeds from cotton simple and made cotton profitable for many in the south. The gin worked by cranking a handle which then made wire teeth pull the seeds out and deposit them in a box that could easily be removed. The cotton gin has affected us by making our clothes mass producible (along with the water powered loom) and making many farmers lives easier. Because of the cotton gin, clothes are now mass produced in society and people like me are able to get clothes easier.

INVENTIONS

1825 Electromagnet: http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blelectromagnet.htm The electromagnet was an invention or a device that and electric current produced magnetism. William Sturgeon, who was a British electrician, invented the first electromagnet in 1825. An electromagnet can be made by wrapping a copper wire around iron and sending a current through it. When the current goes through the copper wire, the piece of iron becomes magnetized. When the current is shut off, it becomes demagnetized. Electromagnets have become a very important part of our everyday lives. Engineers can now make automatic switches a lot easier and cheaper because they no longer need the mechanical use of gears. Without electromagnets, the world would be quite different. Different types of energy sources could not be used, like hydroelectric sources. We also wouldnt have many every day products that we use because many things are powered by electromagnets, like microphones, television, most speakers, and even computer hard drives.

INVENTIONS

1837 Telegraph: http://inventors.about.com/od/indrevolution/a/telegraph_2.htm The invention of the telegraph was first made creditable to a man named Samuel Morse. He invented it in 1836 with the help of his assistant, Leonard Graph. Later the two filed for patent and become the first 2 people to invent the telegraph. After passing a bill through the senate and congress, the first telegraph line was completed in 1844 in order to allow mainstream use of it and promote easier communication. Because of Samuel Morse, we have invented what is called Morse code. (Morse code has saved hundreds of thousands of lives as it is used for signaling in emergencies.) Because of Samuel Morse, the way was paved for Alexander Graham Bell to later invent the telephone which we use in modern life. Both Morse and Bell have shaped how modern society works today and how I am able to easily communicate with others.

INVENTIONS

1839 Bicycle: http://www.antonnews.com/plainviewoldbethpageherald/1999/06/18/opinion/ mcmillan.html The first bicycle was invented by Kirkpatrick Macmillan. He completed construction of the first pedal driven wood bicycle in 1839. The original bikes were not comfortable to ride for the wheels were wooden with iron tires. It wasnt until 1886 when Scottish inventor John Dunlop invented pneumatic tires, thus smoothing out the ride. While there were no pedals on this bike, it was easily ride able because all you had to do was push it against the ground. This bike was first patented on January 12th, 1818 in Baden, Germany. Because of the invention of the bike, transportation has become easier and people have been able to get places faster. By riding a bicycle instead of walking, people have been able to shave off minutes on simple trips. I have personally been affected by the bicycle because it is a valuable way to exercise and it helps me easily get to places that I need to go.

1862 Machine Gun: http://jhsweb.everett.k12.wa.us/spring2006/casad/stylesheetarticle.html The first invention of the machine gun was called the Gatling Gun and was made by Dr. Richard J. Gatling. Gatling was a man wanted to see new ways to do war and because of this ultimately changed how wars are fought. The Gatling gun is considered one of the first automatic firing weapons and is consisted up of multiple barrels that rotate and is hand cranked. It was invented on May 9th, 1862 and was considered for use in the Civil War. However, neither the Confederate or Union used it and it was later used in other wars like WWI. The invention of this weapon later developed into the Browning machine gun which was used extensively in WWII. The machine gun has helped America fight wars and defend our country. Throughout the past hundred years, we have kept our country safe because of the machine gun and the defensive value it has. By keeping our country safe, we have also kept people safe like you and me.

1862 Typewriter: http://inventors.about.com/od/indrevolution/a/newspaper_2.htm The credited inventor for the type writer was a Wisconsin newspaper man named Christopher Latham Sholes. He invented this alongside Carlos Gidden and Samuel Soules. The purpose of this invention was to make an independent printing press after Christopher Lathams newsmen in his office started protesting and quitting their jobs. They were first granted patents in July 1868 and because of this revolutionized modern typing. In modern society, the type writer has affected us drastically. The idea of the type writer eventually developed into mainstream news reporting with it. Newspapers ultimately affect how we receive news and also how I learn about the world and whats going on in it. Along with that, the typewriter developed into the keyboard which is similar in many ways. Because of the keyboard, I am now able to do school assignments easier and write my thoughts.

INVENTIONS

1873 Barbed Wire: http://inventors.about.com/od/bstartinventions/a/BarbedWire.htm Joseph Glidden is credited with the invention of the first barbed wire is known for it because he developed a common type that is still being used today. This type involves barbs being locked in place and the metal being massed produced. This idea was first used for keeping cattle in a certain area so that they would not escape and cost a rancher loss in money. This invention was first invented in 1873 but patented on November 24th, 1874. The barbed wire has impacted you and me directly because it has been used in wars that were meant to keep our country safe from threats. Such a noticeable war was World War 1 where barbed wire was used to defend fronts and trenches. Because of wars like World War 1, we were ultimately able to defend America.
