The Sutra of the Heart of the Great Practice of Zazen [InterpretationfromtheSanskritbyMichaelEidoLuetchford] ThisIhaveheard: Once,GautamaBuddhawasstayingonVulturePeakwithalarge gatheringofmonksandbodhisattvas.TheBuddhawasabouttofinish thepracticeofZazen,thepracticethatiswisdomitself.

Atthattime,thegreatbodhisattvaAvalokitesvarahadcometorecognize thesethingswhilepracticingZazen: Herecognizedthatthefiveaspectsusedtodescribethepsychophysical body(physicalform,feeling,perception,humanconstructs, consciousness)havenoactualexistenceoftheirown. ThenthevenerableSariputra,withthedignityofabuddha,askedthe greatbodhisattvaAvalokitesvara: IfasincerepersonfromagoodfamilywantstopracticeZazen,how shouldweteachthem? ThenthegreatbodhisattvaAvalokitesvarasaidthistoSariputra: Sariputra,whenasinceremanorwomanfromagoodfamilystarts topracticeZazen,theywillrecognisethatthefiveaspectsusedto describethepsychophysicalbodyhavenoseparateexistenceoftheir own. Physicalformiswithoutitsownseparateexistence.Thatwhichis withoutitsownseparateexistenceisphysicalform. Thereisnophysicalformotherthantheformwhichiswithoutits ownseparateexistence,andthereisnoformthatiswithoutitsown separateexistenceotherthanphysicalform.Physicalformandthat whichiswithoutitsownseparateexistencearethesame. Inthesameway,theotherfouraspectsarealsowithouttheirown separateexistence. Inthisway,Sariputra,allthingsinthisworldarewithouttheirown separateexistences;therearenotthingsthatariseintotheworld,and thenceasetoexist,theclassificationsofpureorimpuredonot describethem,andtheyareneitherdeficientnorreplete;theyare justasitis. Atthisverymoment,Sariputra,itfollowsthatinthatwhichis withoutseparateexistencethereisneitherform,norfeeling,nor perception,norhumanconstructs,norconsciousness.

[Inthatwhichiswithoutseparateexistence,]therearenoorgansof perceptionsuchasears,eyes,nose,tongue,bodyormind,ortheir functionsofsight,sound,smell,taste,andtouch. Sincethefunctionofsightiswithoutseparateexistence,thereisno dividingofrealityintotheseeingsubjectandtheobjectseen,andno mentalinterpretation. Sincethereisnoknowledgeandnoignorance,andnoplacewhere knowledgeisheld,thereisnoagingandnodeath,andnobasisfor aginganddeath. Nofournobletruths. Nobuildingupofunderstanding,noattainment,nothingtoget. Andsincethereisnothingtoget,Sariputra,thepracticeofZazen dispelsmentalillusions. Realisingthatmentalillusionsarenotreal,peoplewhopractice Zazenovercomedelusionandaregroundedinreality. Allthebuddhasofthepast,presentandfuturehavesoughttheir salvationinthepracticeofZazen,whichawakensthemtowisdom. SothemantrathatdescribesZazenisoneofgreatinsight,supreme, unequalled.Itcanhealsufferingandistruenotfalse.Thisisthe mantraofZazen: Gone,gone,goneoverintotheonenessoftheotherside.Hailtoperfect intuitivewisdom. ThisiswhatpeoplewillrealisethroughpracticingZazen. ThentheBuddhagotupfromZazenandpraisedthewordsofthegreat bodhisattvaAvalokitesvara: Good,goodman!Thatishowitis.Thisishowyoushouldteach peopletopracticeZazen.Allthebuddhaswillrejoice! WhentheBuddhasaidthesewords,thevenerableSariputra,thegreat bodhisattvaAvalokitesvara,thewholeassembly,andthewholeofthe worldrejoicedandpraisedtheBuddhaswords. ThusendstheSutraoftheHeartofthePracticeofZazen.
