DESCRIPTION.

The case Road to Hell written by Gareth Evans is about how two characters with different backgrounds, personalities and points of view interact. John Baker, a successful western chief engineer of the Barracanias branch of a multinational company. In the case, he is mentioned as English expatriate. Since he worked in a foreign country, he thinks he has experience in understanding a regional staffs psychology and knowing exactly how to get along with locals. In the case, Baker has been preparing Mathew Rennalls to take over his position. Rennalls is a young engineer, well-educated Barracanias professionals, a graduate of London University. The last meeting between John Baker and Rennalls ended up in a disaster. Renalls instead of accepting the chief engineer position he turns in his resignation letter. This instance left John baffled and asking himself, what he might have said wrong during the final interview. The instance also puts the future of Barracanias staff and authorities in relations danger. DIAGNOSIS. This is a classic case of clash of cultures people from different cultures and backgrounds do not consider cultural diversity. Each tend assess and measure each other using their own perceptions and biases which frequently lead to grave misunderstanding and conflicts. Despite Bakers knowledge of Matt's political views, staunch nationalist, racial sensitivity issues, intolerance to any discrimination he built his interview based on his own (European) cultural perspective. He made this by giving historical and personal suggestions that were not intended to be offensive. However, from Matts perspective, the suggestions were degrading and utterly inappropriate. Critical Race Theory The real problem is that Baker does not see the problem or understand the problem. When using the Critical Race Theory (CRT) it is obvious that Baker is racist Baker looks at the situation from a European perspective and cannot see why Matthew Rennalls would not see it the way that he meant it. The problem is not an easily fixed problem because everybody sees things differently. Because discrimination is not an easily defined for some situations, in this case both participants come from different backgrounds. The fact that Matthew Rennalls is what Baker considers to be hyper sensitive to race relations, dont factor in, because what Baker did is to make Rennalls feel like his race is inferior to the European races. The fact that Baker considers himself sensitive to the regional staff is somewhat of a joke. Baker is focused on making them fit his definitions of what he believes is right, however Rennalls feels, rightly, that Baker is condescending and is putting down his race. Baker did not learn one important fact, that not everyone is the same. Diversity brings its own challenges, which include two extremely different personalities and perspectives.

THEORY 4. PRESCRIPTION: The prescription for this company would be to use a diversity audit to help find the end to the problem. This would help to avoid legal issues as well as to help encourage diversity in the work place. This would encourage minority employees to try harder and be able to move up within the company. 5. FALLOUT:There are some risks associated with using a diversity audit. By putting the problem down on paper, legal issues arise. The fact that there is written evidence of the diversity problems can be troublesome for some companies. The ability of this information to be used in future legal issues is a valid one, however the benefit of using the diversity audit far outweigh the risks * KEY POINT *
