On behalf of the Boys & Girls Club of Oroville, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the many volunteers and community members that helped make our inaugural Pancake Breakfast a successful event. The support from local businesses and service clubs was phenomenal. They donated food, raffle prizes, and volunteered their time. On behalf of our kids, I would like to thank the following groups for sponsoring our event: Oroville Optimist Club Casagrande Storage Oroville Exchange Club Beta Sigma Phi Sorority Ophir Gopher Jeep Club Coffee Diem, Costco, Pro Pacific Fresh & Danielsons Co also made generous donations of food. The meal was fantastic and received rave reviews from our wonderful community members who came out to support the event and the Club. A special thanks goes out to our cooks: Charlie Peck, of Juvenile Hall, and James Duncan, of the Hotel Diamond. The Boys & Girls Club is proud to be a part of the Oroville community. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to be a part of a positive, engaging and educational program that challenges kids to reach new heights academically, socially and promote their personal character. All money raised by this event directly impacts the lives of youth in Oroville. The funds from the Pancake Breakfast went towards the purchase of new basketball hoops for the Club members. We realize that we would not be able to impact the hundreds of kids we do each year without your support. The Boys & Girls Club is open Monday-Friday year round. We offer a free snack in the afternoons and free dinner every evening. We offer our teens programming services and mentoring that will help prepare them for jobs and careers. We are focused on academic success, offering homework tutoring every day with trained staff members. Teens in middle and high school wanting to join the Club are always welcome; our annual fee is only $10. Again thank you to all who helped make our Pancake Breakfast a wonderful event. We look forward to doing it again next year!

Chico Country Supper

Don your helmet, hop on your bike and head on down the Midway to enjoy the 10th Annual Country Supper on Friday, June 1, 2010, as we celebrate the Chico Museums exciting, new exhibit, The Bicycle: Life on Two Wheels. From the moment you arrive, Jazzuppa, featuring Art Davis on keyboard, Scott Johnson on guitar and Bob Spiegel on a woodwinds, will treat you to a variety of tunes that will get your toes tapping. For your sipping pleasure, JBs Bar & Beverage Service will be offering an assortment of fine wines and beverages all evening beginning at 5:00 p.m. Butte County Cattlemen will be offering their fabulous tri tip dinner grilled to perfection by Myron Openshaw and crew and served up at 6:15 p.m. Baked potatoes, grilled by Kevin Moretti, salads and fresh baked rolls will accompany that tantalizing tri tip. Desserts created by Wendy Deen will top off the meal. Raffle prizes, including memorabilia used to design and assemble the bicycle used in the movie, ET, are being gathered. Plus, dont miss a once-in-a-lifetime chance to win a CSUC 125th Anniversary commemorative, bright red bicycle, designed and signed by local Chico artist, Jake Early. You may purchase your winning raffle ticket at any of the three Rabobank branches in Chico and at the Chico Museum booth at the Thursday Night Market. The Country Supper will be one of your last chances to purchase that winning ticket. The Country Supper is one of only two annual fundraisers that help finance educational exhibits at the Chico Museum, and your reservation provides you with the opportunity of contributing toward future exhibits and its ongoing welfare. Reservation deadline is Monday, May 21, 2012. Show your support the Chico Museum by reserving your spot at the Country Supper today. Reservations are $40 per person and may be made with your credit card on line at www.farwestheritage.org or by calling the Chico Museum at 891-4336 with your credit card. Fiber Art Exhibit at Ave. 9

Avenue 9 Gallery presents A Sense of Place: Phyllis Cullen and the California Fiber Artists, May 25 to June 23 with a Friday, May 25 reception from 5-8pm. As a teenager, Cullen loved to embroider, but stopped because of the demands of medical studies. Cullen, now a doctor, cares for fragile patients in chronic pain, including those in third-world countries who lack modern medical resources. In the late l980s, Cullens need for creative expression led her to take a quilt-making class. The medium appealed to her because of its associations with comforting people. In her quest for more personal expressiveness she studied at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Chico Art Center, and at the School of Light and Color in Sacramento. She began to incorporate paint, photography, thread painting and beading into her quilts. Cullen sees her dual practice of art and medicine as mutually reinforcing. Cullen, wanting to bring fiber artists from the larger California area to Chico has invited members of California Fiber Artists to show with her at Avenue 9 Gallery. CFA was established in 2004 and is a partnership of diverse independent fiber artists working together by consolidating their talents for the purpose of successfully educating the public and promoting fiber art through public exhibitions throughout California. Avenue 9 Gallery, 180 E. 9th Avenue, Chico, 879-1821 Regular Hours: W-Sun. noon-5pm. www.avenue9gallery.com

Paradise Garden Tour

Paradise Garden Club is celebrating their 20th garden tour on June 2 and 3 with a bang-up list of six fabulous gardens! Each garden is unique and will inspire new ideas for other homeowners. Proceeds support scholarships for Horticulture students at Butte College, Paradise daffodil project and community education and beautification. Here are brief descriptions of the gardens. Located on a corner lot frequented by deer, the landscape demonstrates how to co-exist with Bambi and still have colorful flowers and foliage. The backyard has several areas for entertaining and has been the site for weddings, birthdays, church and community activities. An arch is flanked by Crystal Palace roses and another arch is loaded with the petite roses of Cecile Brunner. Unique this year is a childrens vegetable garden and a display sponsored by Kids Growing Strong. A childs playhouse and an area for adults is decorated with many container plants. Sturdy plants combining perennials and annuals are interspersed among raised beds and a relaxing lawn area. Two artists created an Asian flare on their expansive one acre yard, creating a series of garden rooms. Water features are discovered among the specimen maples, camellias, azaleas, Japanese snow bell, and many one-of-a-kind plants. The garden has a sanctuary like feel with cast stone sculptures and clay faces. Year-round flowers and foliage are featured in the yards of two next door houses (one is passive-solar). A retired landscaper designed the Asian-influenced woodland lawns/park and his wife added her cottage style. A central patio connects the gardens with many owner-propagated camellias, rhododendrons, and maples plus assorted volunteer plant mixtures. Interspersed are restful conversation areas to enjoy viewing the properties. A Victorian Farmhouse features portable gardens by using flower-filled vintage wheelbarrows. A rose covered arbor leads to a brick courtyard featuring multi-colored roses. An English Ivy Garden has iron arbors, statuary and antique wire fencing. A restored 1956 Ford pickup and 1959 Cadillac convertible will be on display in front of a barn. Four water features plus a trout stream, that attracts wildlife including otter, makes this property unique. Stone pathways divide the backyard into 4 gardens: Asian, conifer, sun and shade gardens. On the edge of the property, The Town of Paradise designated a 200 year old Black Oak tree as their first Landmark Tree. The tour will be held Saturday, June 2 10:00-4:00 and Sunday, June 3 noon-4:00. Tickets are $15 and include a benefit drawing, free refreshments, compost demonstration, and plant sale. In Oroville, tickets are sold at Lambert Feed and Garden. For more vendors and information, see website Paradisegardenclub.org

True Meaning
By Lanny Dragon

Rows of stones on a sea of green with small ags blowing in the breeze it must be Memorial Day. The orderly precision of the arrangement is awesome, but I wonder if we are missing sight of something. Perhaps we should linger a moment and read the names on the grave markers and wonder: who were they, what role did they play in the military and how did they die? Vera Kelch of Treasures from Paradise Mall puts up an inspiring window display every Memorial Day to thank the men and women who have served their country, she told me, and to honor her husband who helped build the Burma Road from India to China during World War II. I have included some photos with this article, but the pictures do not do the display justice, and there are more stories there than I can include. Ask Harold Batelaan who also works at the Mall about his experiences in Korea and check out the picture of Harold on K.P. I suggest you visit the store for more. The uniforms, ribbons and medals do not tell the whole story. You need to talk to someone who can give personality to the heroes who wore the uniforms. Check out Marine Sergeant Bob Strang whose uniform displays a bronze star, a silver star and a purple heart! And they were all heroes to one degree or another! Let me introduce you to a one-time Paradise resident who moved to Oroville whom I had the pleasure of knowing Colonel Ralph Carpenter. Carp joined the Army to do his part and volunteered for Airborne Infantry because the slight bonus would help support his folks at home. He started as a Private and rose through the ranks with a battleeld promotion to retire years later as a Colonel from the command of the Jungle Warfare Training Center in Panama. Like most successful men, Ralph was loved and supported throughout his life and career by his wife, Doris. Photos will prove my contention that Ralphs young bride could have been the twin sister of the Swedish beauty and lm star Ingrid Bergman! Ralph a n d

Doris made a dynamic duo as they moved around Europe, the United States and Panama. They raised three sons and nally in retirement had time to cruise and travel for pleasure. After Ralph died, Doris celebrated her 70th birthday by skydiving over Paradise and shouting Geronimo as a tribute to Ralph and a celebration of their life together. My own family celebrates Memorial Day remembering its past and present service personnel. Our son, Andr, is here pictured during the wait for his units deployment in the First Gulf War. Perhaps he is remembering his Great Great Grandfather, Sgt. Levesque, who won the Victoria medal in 1863 or his Great Great Grandfather, Pvt. Cooper of the Illinois volunteers receiving his honorable discharge in 1870 signed by President Abraham Lincoln. There are thousands of stories like this out there and generations of men and women who have served their country. It was my fathers idea to put up a ag pole when WWII ended in victory. We y our stars and stripes at home every storm-free day so long as we have a family member serving in the armed forces. So on this Memorial Day I urge you to see beyond the ags and granite and to get to know a veteran directly or through his or her family. It is an experience you will treasure forever. And, as the ancient Greeks taught, a person remembered has never died! That, I believe, is the true message of Memorial Day.

Dedication of Oroville Historic Icons

The City of Oroville has dedicated two historic icons, a restored logging skidder and a dredger bucket that are located at the landscaped area adjacent to the Montgomery Street Highway 70 off ramp. The logging skidder was made available through a donation of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hedlund in 1961 and originally was on display in Hewitt Park. They were later moved to the City corporate storage yards. The logging skidder was painted red, however during the restoration process by Pioneer Auto Body of Oroville; it was discovered that this particular set of historic wheels had been painted yellow. The dredger bucket is now displayed with a stand that was created and manufactured by Metal Works of Oroville. The bucket was made available through a generous donation of the Wendell Hammon Family. Oroville, particularly adjacent to the Feather River, was an area that had large dredging operations that resulted in the massive piles of river rock that we still see today in Riverbend Park, Bedrock Park and along Feather River Blvd. The historical significance of the dredging operation is that it was for locating gold-rich placer deposits below Oroville. The logging skidder and dredger bucket were dropped into place by Martin Crane & Rigging of Oroville.

Rattlesnake!
As the warm weather returns, humans are not the only species coming out to enjoy the sun. Snakes, too, can be found basking in the suns rays. Although most snakes in the state are harmless, the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) reminds the public to steer clear of the venomous rattlesnake and know what to do if one strikes. All of California, from the marshlands to the mountains, is snake country. You dont even have to be in the great outdoors to discover a snake. They can be found in your garden and sometimes even your garage, but there is no need to panic. Snakes play an important role in the ecosystem, including keeping the rodent population under control. Rattlesnakes are generally not aggressive and usually strike only when threatened or deliberately provoked. Given room, they will retreat. Most snake bites occur when a rattlesnake is handled or accidentally touched by someone walking or climbing. The majority of snakebites occur on the hands, feet and ankles. On rare occasions, rattlesnakes can cause serious injury to humans. The California Poison Control Center notes that rattlesnakes account for more than 800 bites each year in the U.S. with one to two deaths. Most bites occur between the months of April and October when snakes and humans are most active outdoors. The potential of running into a rattlesnake should not deter anyone from venturing outdoors, but there are precautions that can be taken to lessen the chance of being bitten. Is it a rattlesnake? Anyone who ventures outdoors this time of year should know how to identify Californias only native venomous snake the rattlesnake.

There are several species including the northern Pacic rattlesnake (in northern California), and the western diamondback, sidewinder, speckled rattlesnake, red diamond rattlesnake, southern Pacic rattlesnake, Great Basin rattlesnake and the Mojave rattlesnake (all found in Southern California). A rattlesnake is a heavy-bodied, blunt-tailed snake with one or more rattles on the tail. It has a triangular-shaped head, much broader at the back than at the front, and a distinct neck region. The rattlesnake also has openings between the nostrils and eyes, which is a heat-sensing pit. The eyes are hooded with elliptical pupils. Rattlesnakes have a series of dark and light bands near the tail, just before the rattles which are different from the markings on the rest of the body. Rattles may not always be present, as they are often lost through breakage and are not always developed on the young. The dos and donts in snake country Rattlesnakes are not conned to rural areas. They have been found in urban areas, on riverbanks and lakeside parks and at golf courses. Startled rattlesnakes may not rattle before striking defensively. DFG recommends the following safety precautions be followed to reduce the likelihood of startling a rattlesnake: Wear hiking boots and loose-tting long pants. Never go barefoot or wear sandals when walking through wild areas. When hiking, stick to wellused trails. Avoid tall grass, weeds and heavy underbrush where snakes may hide during the day. Do not step or put your hands where you cannot see, and avoid wandering around in the dark. Step ON logs and rocks, never over them, and be especially careful when climbing rocks or gathering rewood. Check out stumps or logs before sitting down, and shake out sleeping bags before use. Never grab sticks or branches while swimming in lakes and riv6.09 Ac. ers. Rattlesnakes can swim. Never hike alone. Always have someone with you who can assist in an emergency.Do not handle a freshly killed snake, as it can still inject venom. Keeping snakes out of the yard. The best protection against rattlesnakes in the yard is a rattlesnake proof fence. The fence should either be solid or with mesh no larger than one-quarter inch. It should be at least three feet high with the bottom buried a few inches in the ground. Slanting your snake fence outward about a 30-degree angle will help. Keep vegetation away from the fence and remove piles of boards or rocks around the home. Use caution when removing those piles there may already be a snake there. Encourage and protect natural competitors like gopher snakes, kingsnakes and racers. Kingsnakes actually kill and eat rattlesnakes. What to do in the event of a snake bite: Though uncommon, rattlesnake bites do occur, so have a plan in place for responding to any situation. Carry a cell phone, hike with a companion who can assist in an emergency, and make sure that family or friends know where you are going and when you will be checking in. Stay calm. Wash the bite area gently with soap and water. Remove watches, rings, etc, which may constrict swelling. Immobilize the affected area. Transport safely to the nearest medical facility. What you should NOT do after a rattlesnake bite: DONT apply a tourniquet. DONT pack the bite area in ice. DONT cut the wound with a knife or razor. DONT use your mouth to suck out the SOLD venom. DONT let the victim drink alcohol.

Louis here...
April was very nice here in the desert. Only a few warm days, but now that May is here, summer is upon us. It has been in the 100s, and I am spending a lot of time in the house! Mom lets me run out on the golf course at night. I just love it. No one around, and I get to run and pee on all the trees! Sometimes my friends are out, too! Austin has come by, and he and I run. And the two Yorkies, Kirby and Coco like to run, too. Coco more than Kirby. But we just run around all over! Its nice cause the lawn is cool, and we dont go on the cart paths cause the cement is still hot! Paulette and Mark have gone home, whew! No more walking. Mom still takes me to the dog park, but I dont have to go for those walks. And now when the phone rings in the morning, I know its not for me! Hah! She walks the two little Boston terriers of her daughter. They have longer legs. I hope they enjoy it more than I did! I am home free until next November! Or is it October? Not sure, but anyway its too hot to walk. I go for a ride every afternoon with Dad to get the mail in the golf cart. Thats good enough for me. Mom seems to think I am a water dog! She bought a life vest for me and takes me in the pool with her. She just doesnt get it. I dont like the water! Even when the sprinklers come on, I run into the house. I dont want to get wet. But when she puts that stupid life vest on me, it has a handle on top, she picks me up and puts me in the pool with her. Now the temperature is about 84 degrees, so its nice, but I hate the water! She seems to think that it will cool me down. I can sit inside the house with the air on all day and be cool. I dont need the pool to cool off. Mom and Dad like it, so let them do it. You should see me, I look dumb in the life vest. But I will admit, it keeps me aoat, head and all. Without it I would sink like a brick, cause I am top heavy. The minute I hit the water, my little feet are moving as fast as they can, so I can get out of there! Not sure which I hate more, the pool or a bath. Both of them get me wet, but the bath has soap and more water. Maybe the pool isnt so bad for me after allthere is no soap! My friend Harley left to go home to Washington, and it is very quiet here now. Most of the Snowbirds have own the coop. They are gone for the summer. They should be called snow chickens, cause the minute the weather warms up, there is a mass exodus from the desert. They all return home to their cool places, like Vancouver, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Sweden, etc. Life is good here, even without them. I still have all my friends at the dog park. A lot of them live here year round, so I get to see them often. Well, its time to goMom is taking me to the dog park!
