40 Upsides of Being Bald

This book is dedicated to all the bald people in the world that know how to enjoy a hairless head.

It is also dedicated for those that havent given up yet to be bald and are still trying shampoos, ointments, injections, and magical formulations; to those who use wigs, hairpieces, craneal paints, doll hair, and all sorts of artificial artiluges. Even also to the guys that comb their hair like Oaxaca cheese to cover the bald areas, delivering a shameful and unsuccessful illusion of hair. The dedication extends specially to the illustrators of Mexico, Spain and other adoptive countries, bald and not bald, who collaborated to make this book possible. But the main dedication is for those who I love and love me back, hair or no hair: Cristi, Kristen, Robin, Ric, Mom and Dad.

Why this book?

The subject 40 Upsides of Being Bald is a creative exercise that has been running inside my head for some years. I am dazzled that the subject of baldness has so little coverage by worlds literature. Aside from those medical books that tell you how NOT to be bald (99% of them with failed results, inconclusive or simply frauds), I havent found a single book that celebrates the fact of BEING BALD. Some think that being bald is a curse, a bad twist from destiny, a fatal and unavoidable genetic disorder, something that has to be hidden with faulty, complicated, painful and inefficient tricks. Baldness has stopped being a medical issue and has become a lifestyle. When I was little, there was only one bald guy in TV: Kojak. If you were bald, you were called Kojak. No other choice. (Well, there was some guy named Yul Bryner, but he was in the movies and not as well marketed as Kojak).

Nowadays, we have a vast number of bald super heroes, from Michael Jordan and Vin Diesel, and dont forget Bruce Willis. To be bald has become something cool and noteworthy. This book offers 40 very interesting reasons why being bald can be a great adventure in life. The list does not have an order, nor any advantage is more important than the next one. They just appear in the same erratic order in which they jumped into my head. Each one of this Upsides of Being Bald was illustrated by one of the best 40 illustrators of Mexico and Spain. These artists, in a noble and unselfish way, have spilled their creativity in the following pages, rendering evidence of the fun attitude and collaborative spirit of this profession. 40 Upsides of Being Bald is a tribute for all baldies that, with great bravery and conviction, rise their shiny heads, defying the sun, the cold and the astonished look of children.
