vision
Roskilde Festival wants to do its part in cultivating the blooming creativity that is sprouting on the campsite among the festivals many amazing camps.
This is no easy task, as many factors determine what is possible and where the limitations are in addition to fire and noise considerations that, as a festival, we need to show, the camps that pop up for a week on the fields of the festival are a manifold and colourful bunch with many different needs; needs that sometimes overlap but at other times are in direct opposition The festival is enriched with a gifted and creative crowd of participants who genuinely wish to help create a great festival not just for themselves but for everyone else too For them its not just about having the biggest party, but also about creating the wildest, most powerful and amazing experience for themselves and other festival goers They want to shed the shackles of normality that are on them the remaining weeks of the year This is an audience that is more than just an audience they are participants, and as a festival we are well proud and enriched to have them Therefore, this year we have launched an initiative were calling The roskilde Festival Camp Codex which focuses on opportunities and challenges rather than restrictions and admonishing fingers We wish to celebrate the creative and creating camps bordering on the bonkers and the brilliant, while AT THE sAME TiME giving space to the quieter neighbour camp, the green concept that the festival wants to have as its foundation, and the specific regulations that a large, international event with 130,000 participants is subject to To a large extent the codex is based in YoUr needs, ideas and thoughts, and isnt carved in stone rather, it is a process in which together with you we will continuously evaluate, correct and perfect the codex, from year to year We emphasise dialogue because its necessary for us to keep in step in determining what is actually important to the indefinable orange Feeling that especially roskilde Festivals camps guarantee The festival is now taking the first step in gathering here everything we see of opportunities and challenges for the festivals camps, as well as including the initiatives we would like to offer this year next year we will develop this further with you if you already have suggestions and observations about the codex or you think that camp life is the shizzle but that we could make it even better if only then send us an email or keep an eye on our website after this years festival where will invite YoU to join in evaluating the initiatives and so define the future of the festival Both in order to improve this first edition of our Camp Codex and in general We emphasise dialogue Write to camp@roskilde-festival dk We KnoW that you want to play with us and wed love to play with you!

in the following pages we have tried to collect EvErYTHinG you will need to know to have a great time at roskilde Festival There is a special focus on camp life and things beyond the experiences that await you in front of the stages When we say 4 days of music 8 days of partying, we mean it, and we also know that the magic the orange Feeling comes from you We build the frame you create the painting so read this guide as a number of opportunities We have no interest in setting up rules and regulations that dont come from your needs and that dont help you have a greater festival Without your respect and understanding, a rule or a norm isnt worth the paper its written on Therefore the guide also adds explations to some of the challenges if we were to capture in one sentence the spirit behind everything in the codex, it would go like this:

We want creativity, we are subject to the need for safety, we have an ethical obligation to consider the environment, and there must be room for everyone.
Thats all there is to it

the orAnge feeling

if you allow a bit of orange Feeling to flow in and out of your mind and lead your actions, we can guarantee that your festival experience will be out of the ordinary But what is it? As a feeling it is virtually impossible to define and you can find just as many explanations of it as there are festival goers We can only say that you know it when you feel it, and that its a feeling like no other However, we have scrutinised thousands of your own descriptions of what it might be and compiled a small list of how you can capture it: sHArE what you have without expecting anything in return TrUsT that others want the best for you Lean forward and PArTiCiPATE Keep your eyes oPEn and your mind FrEE PLAY and invite others to join not just the ones you know sUrPrisE yourself Meet the challenges in your way with a HUG and a sMiLE some of the items in the guide are concluded with a point called orange Feeling These are ideas for little extra pieces of pure festival love you can offer but which no-one is expecting from you

getting up And running

We have had years when finding a space for ones camp has been difficult We have remedied that this year by organising the biggest campsite ever obviously some people prefer to be situated in specific places and everyone cant camp there But have a look at the festival map What everyone said was the coolest place last year, probably isnt this year We change things up every year, so try something new and get a positive surprise There is space enough roskilde map This year we have also addressed the great frustration felt by so many that the fence is knocked down before time We will now try something completely new where you have to book beforehand which entrance you want to use This way we can far better plan the capacity, so that everybody gets in quickly Thats why weve skipped the availability of getting wristbands in advance The campsite opens on saturday 25 June at 6:00 pm From this time you can get your wristband, enter and pitch your tent Dont worry, there will be room for your camp even if youre not in as the very first ones And dont forget: no matter which entrance you use, you can pitch your tent in all areas More info at roskilde-festival dk/uk/practical Can I reserve a spaCe for my Camp on the CampsIte? no everyone must have the same opportunities The few camps where reservations because of practical reasons have been necessary this year, are included as Green Camps or in Clean out Loud, a special rubbish initiative in the huge area P with more than enough room for everybody read more about these initiatives later in the codex and at roskilde-festival dk CampIng optIons roskilde Festivals campsite is enormous Thats why we have also created havens and diversity so that you can find exactly what matches your camp We have a whole series of different types of camping: normal, Clean & silent, Get A Tent, Get A Place, MCCamp, sleep-in-busses and Caravan As mentioned, we have also arranged all parts of the normal campsite with completely unique identities Feel free to plan your camp so that it matches where you want to live read more about the camping areas at roskilde-festival dk/uk/practical/camping

Orange Feeling Help your neighbour pitch their tent maybe move yours a metre so theres room for theirs, even if they didnt show up until four days into the festival and you queued up in your sleeping bag hours and hours to get the best place This is guaranteed to land you an extra hug and possibly even a new set of friends invite two neighbouring camps for a beer after hammering in the tent pegs

the cAmp
The campsite is divided into small areas where the festival goers live, rest, meet and party in the centre of each area is a square an agora Here you can cook, find information in the service towers, get help and hang out As well as having free luggage storage and various booths with food and drink, kiosks, etc , many of the agoras have themes: Art City, Poor City, Game City, street City, Cinema City, Clean out Loud, swim City and silent & Clean Find more information at roskilde-festival dk in the course of the spring, so that you know where you want to hammer in your pegs, or leaf through the programme when you get it hoW bIg Can my Camp be? of course there are no limits to how many people can live in your camp But since the camping area isnt infinitely large, and a lot of people would like to live as close to the stages as possible, think of your neighbour when you set up your camps communal area As one of only very few festivals, roskilde Festival has always allowed pavilions and other coverings ALTHoUGH space is tight, because we feel that it makes sense for the camps to have a good communal meeting place However, this will only work if you show consideration to each others space requirements, also considering how densely packed the area is Although there is no fixed limitations on how big a communal area can be, feel free to use the following rule of thumb: Max 3 x 3 metres (the size of a normal white pavilion) communal area per 20 inhabitants in the camp However, the service guards can always limit a communal area if they deem it necessary We need to find space for everyone youre alloWed to brIng a pavIlIon These are banned at all other festivals this we know But we want to keep the flag flying Feel free to bring a pavilion for your communal area but just one per camp (though see the above rule of thumb if there are many of you) however, make sure you pay a deposit for it it costs dkk 100 and must be done in the nearest agora luggage storage if your pavilion doesnt have a deposit marker, we will come and ask you to take it down You get your deposit back when you take home the pavilion or hand it in along with any destroyed tents, camping chairs etc in the luggage storages by CiTYcentre West, CiTYcentre East and Agora G The reason that the deposit is even necessary is that otherwise the many pavilions would generate incredible amounts of trash if they were just left behind buIldIng a Camp roCks The creativity that many festival goers invest in constructing their camp is enormous and part of what makes the festival experience extra diverse and colourful Due to space and fire considerations, however, the festival is subject to certain obstructions that we MUsT adhere to: brIng thIs: normal lightweight camping furniture Folding tables small beach and folding chairs Camping mats White pavilions Foam mattresses Banners, flags, decoration, potted plants, weird sound systems etc Anything you can think of as long as it is in the category small, lightweight materials and you take it home again with you or hand it in to the renovation crew

dont brIng thIs: Living room furniture, such as easy chairs, sofas, coffee tables and dining tables Large construction materials Generators and domestic appliances Although the passage above can sound like a damper on creativity, there are many possibilities for imaginative installations Colours, flags and small installations can brighten up an otherwise drab pavilion, just as light installations can attract people at night, etc Be creative within the framework, and think outside the box

10

A short note from your fellow campers: Borrowing things is not okay even if its for a laugh People are genuinely upset to have their palms and rubber dinghies stolen Tents are allowed for living in but for security reasons they cant be more than 2 5 metres tall This may sound like very little but because of the great focus on safety it is necessary THE GoLDEn TEPEE rULE Exception: We love tepees, so if you wish to bring yours to the festival, you can, as long as it is primarily used for sleeping in and has a max height of 4 metres the servICe guard Is your frIend The orange service guards are there to take care of you all of you not to supervise you or control you or be a pain Although sometimes this means that they have to take on annoying jobs like extinguishing mood candles, quietening down a party or moving some tents, they are there for YoU Become friendly with your service tower and go to them if you need help, guidance or just a nice chat sponsors/CommerCIal Collaborators and Camps roskilde Festival is very reluctant about all that sponsorship stuff We do it only under very strict forms in which a company can only enter if it offers better opportunities and service for the festival goers and if they enter, its expensive, helping to ensure that the ticket price is kept low Many companies are sorry about that as they would like to flash their logo to you via flags, balloons and other stuff so they think, we can just sneak our way in through a couple of camps That doesnt cost anything, and we can do what we want our response to that is a no thanks if you can score something for your camp from a good friend, mums company or somewhere else, thats just fine but dont do samples, advertising, flags, banners etc if your local booze company or your cousins neighbours dads worldwide conglomerate wants to participate, refer them to us so that everyone benefits, that is if we even want them to enter Like we said, were quite reluctant and prefer to keep the advertising stuff to a minimum

Orange Feeling Leave the area like you found it Bring home the things you took to the site, throw them out or hand them in for recycling e g pavilions and car batteries Give a hug to a passing orange service guard

12

2 The camp must make fun green activities every day that involve and inspire other festival goers 3 The camp must be based on a surprising theme and a powerful slogan that incorporates Green Footsteps green foot Everyone must be able to see that this is a Green Camp 4 The green activities during the festival must be photo and video documented The goal is create a video which can inspire future festival goers to live a green camp life 5 You must have fun in real roskilde Festival style! out of the applications we receive, we choose 6 camps to be official GrEEn CAMPs As we wish to distribute these over all the camping areas, bringing the good green energy to even more people, spaces will be reserved for them at select places in the camping areas The camp can have a maximum of 25 inhabitants is your camp to be one of the 6 Green Camps, then send an application to greenfootsteps@roskilde-festival dk before 1/6/2011 read more at roskilde-festival dk Clean out loud in 2011 area P is transformed into a huge environmental experiment The goal is to create an attractive camping area with cool events, alternative clearing up methods, lounge areas and other creative ideas Clean out Loud paves the way for a new way of being at a festival where you dont throw rubbish on the ground, but do live fabulously The initiative is a collaborative effort between roskilde Festival, roskilde Festival Hjskole and vallekilde Hjskole with the aim of changing peoples mentality about clearing up so if YoU have a camp and would like to change area P forever, then register your camp

Orange Feeling Grab a case of beer and visit at least one unknown camp a day Be generous Listen to them, get to know them and find new friends

the environment is Your friend

Unfortunately, rubbish is still a sad final image of a roskilde Festival in some of the camping areas for instance, only about half the tents are brought home again, and this creates piles of trash We are sorry to spend oceans of time and money which we have to move from cool events and music on cleaning up and collecting and getting rid of all the rubbish afterwards And so we really hope that your camp will lend a hand its done in two shakes of a lambs tail if each camp does their little bit so help the festival and clean up your own camp before leaving the area, and use either the available containers for residual waste or donate your camping gear to the organisations that are collecting get rId of your rubbIsh easIly More cleaning up requires more possibilities for getting rid of your rubbish easily Therefore, this year we have deployed even more rubbish collection trucks which every single day will drive around the camping areas, collecting rubbish from you Therefore we encourage your camp to gather its rubbish so that its ready to hand to the super dedicated rubbish teams in addition, as a festival goer you can at any time get rid of your bin liner at the towers where a container is placed At the tower you can also get red bin liners for use in the camp if you want to go all in in sorting rubbish and perhaps catching a glimpse of tomorrows greener festival, then move your camp to the P area Here a small recycling station will be established where you can hand in rubbish in sorted form You can hand in most of the ordinary categories such as glass, metal, cardboard, batteries and residual waste Educated staff will be available at the station to guide you about correct sorting rubbish is actually what constitutes the greatest fire hazard on the campsite The tents just melt if they catch fire no more metal Metal and batteries left behind when you go home destroy our fine camp site Therefore, support the environment and hand over your batter ies and other metal material (cans, etc ) to the nice iron Maidens and Battery Boys collecting all over the camp site CleanIng up Is a party As a new feature, for an hour each day in all the camping areas, we will bring the great rubbish parade called YoUr CLEAn HoUr This means rubbish collection trucks and cleaning people, combined with dancing, singing, larking about, collecting stuff from everybody in a glorious way Help us make it a party Well hit the camping areas at the following times: M and n from 10 am to 11 am L and K from 11 am to 12 pm P from 12 pm to 1 pm G and H from 2 pm to 3 pm C and E from 3 pm to 4 30 pm Orange Feeling if your neighbour camp is capsized in rubbish and chaos, help them get it back on its feet again They might offer a dance and a beer if you smoke, use a pocket ashtray it takes forever to pick up all those millions of butts that each year are stubbed out on the green fields of the festival because they ALL have to be picked up, and by hand, one by one Donate your sleeping bag to a homeless person at one of the festivals collection points

the sound of roskilde

Music and sound are a large part of the festival experience this should surprise no one Both the kind that emanates from the stages and the kind that uplifts the parties from colourful sound systems To put it plainly: Expect the campsite to be full of parties, madness and soUnD pretty much 24-7 Probably especially when you want to sleep and especially from the neighbour camp that is already being a pain At the same time you can be sure that there are loads of people around you in the dead of night who wish to sleep when you want to have a party show each other consideration both ways and talk your way to a shared solution if you like sleeping calmly, dont forget to bring earplugs or place your camp in area J (silent & Clean) which is a special camping area which encourages a cleaner camping life and quiet nights without noisy parties and loud music if you like partying to the max, dont do it in the same spot all week, every night Create havens of peace homebuIlt sound systems are amazIng Each year sees more and more unique sound systems at the festival With wheels, without wheels, colourful, transparent, gigantic, furry, coffin shaped, drink brewing or in other ways unique sound systems its creative, and its AWEsoME! At the same time it attracts people to the party and creates a place to be However, in recent years we have seen a trend for the sound systems in the camping areas to play louder and louder, while the parties in the camping area increase in number That last bit is super cool, but it can end up in a spiral of noise which ultimately can annoy both festival goers and the festivals neighbours and as we now are blessed with great understanding from our neighbours who dont throw the book at us, we would like to show extra consideration to them After all, they have to listen to us for many years to come instead of waving an admonishing finger at you, wed much rather suggest that you Too think of other things than up to 11 when building your system Break free and tweak the other features For instance: Build the craziest theme around the sound system Turn it into a machine that can produce drinks, that you can play games on, that can fly or is filled with festival survival gear Pimp it up with lights (lights attracts people) Make the best playlist Construct the festivals most energy friendly system Etc faCts for the geek Measured at a distance of 10 metres over 5 minutes, music is not to be played above 84 dBA (depending on local conditions and nearest built-up area) between midnight and 8:00 am in the period saturday 25 June until Wednesday 29 June in the period T hursday 30 June until sunday 3 July, music is not be played above 84 dBA (depending on local conditions and nearest built-up area) between 4:00 am and 8:00 am At other times the music level is not to exceed 94 dBA (depending on local conditions and nearest built-up area)

saturday 25 June Wednesday 29 June Midnight - 8:00 am 4:00 am - 8:00 am All other times 94 dBA 84 dBA

thursday 30 June sunday 3 July

84 dBA 94 dBA

15

The festivals service guards at camping will come along and kindly help you keep the level at a reasonable level if its too loud Can I drag my band Into the CampIng area and play a feW traCks? of course you can, as long as its on the campin areas terms and they have a ticket skip the stage and the sound equipment bring it acoustically with a focus on having a good time Many people gathered in one spot on the campsite just results in knocked-over tents, people who trip over tent pegs and much too few drinks so instead, think in small pop-up performances which give five norwegians, an Australian and four swedes a musical experience theyll never forget

Orange Feeling surprise your neighbours by playing a song you know theyll like, instead of driving them insane in your record attempt to play the same track 1001 times before the end of the festival Yell at the top of your voice when you hear the skoooooaaal!!! shout rippling across the campsite (a thing everyone should hope to experience)

16

power
There is very little power in a field and we do travel to the promised festival land together to challenge ourselves Therefore a goal to any camp must be to create awesomeness without power sure, its alright to bring car batteries or other battery stuff to get through the day if your creativity stops before solar panels or muscle power But watch out! Car batteries are filled with acid and must be treated with care You can have your batteries charged by us it costs dkr 125 and also requires you to pay a deposit of dkr 200 at the first charge You will get your deposit back when you take the battery home with you or hand it in to the renovation crew Car batteries left in a field are just no good for the ground water, flora or fauna Where? Car batteries etc can be handed in for recharging (or renovation) in the luggage storages by CiTYcentre East, CiTYcentre West or Agora G Mobile phones and other small items can be handed in for recharging in all the agora luggage storages (dkr 15) remember you to bring your own charger Orange Feeling if you have a great machine that produces power from the sun, rain, urine or beer offer a bit of power to your neighbour A wet newspaper wrapped around a beer and then placed in the baking roskilde sun has always been one of the most efficient beer coolers develop at your leisure

17

food And drink

There is nothing greater than inviting your neighbour camp over for brunch, a meal that can easily last all day and night The festival has a tremendous selection of food but its still great to act the master chef and invite 12 different nationalities to a Christmas dinner, or just the meanest festival pot of spaghetti its just that among the tents there isnt much room for the field kitchen and the blender and a camping stove in the tent is a no-go as it cremates both the tent, the sleeping bag and the hairs on your arm Therefore we have made cooking areas at each agora Here is a communal barbecue and ample space for your sublime chefs camping stove set-up And its the worlds best opportunity to share a meal with the neighbour camp you still dont know You can bring all the food you want, and we have a supermarket there so you can buy your own ingredients so remember to locate the cooking areas and be careful with any form of fire We have been allowed to pack the tents like sardines but thats why any form of open fire is referred to the cooking areas both candles, camping stoves and flamethrowers rULE nUMBEr 1 AnY use of open fire outside of the marked areas are ABsoLUTELY ProHiBiTED and EXTrEMELY DAnGEroUs A patch of tents can burn to the ground in no time drInks? You can bring your own drinks to the camping areas share them as you wish As drinks tend to come in containers, we have an ingenious deposit system You can go to a deposit station yourself, you can donate all your containers to a poor German or greet our turqoise container collectors with open arms This year the collection is handled by DanChurchAid, Danish refugee Council and red Cross Youth There is also the fact that we are surrounded by people with very little or no income People who just manage to scrape through life To them, the deposit system at roskilde Festival is a gold mine which means that deposit collectors from north Africa, the poorest parts of Europe or Asia can easily make a months wages in a day or two They need it, and the deposits put food on their table so please do help them, even if their appearance and behaviour provokes you Be accommodating as a camp and say no if anything bothers you; establish a good dialogue with them rather than escalating division There are plenty of battle zones around the world lets not have any at roskilde Festival

Orange Feeling Help a homeless give all your 34 cases of beer to the collection Look for the turqoise collectors and deposit domes Help a roma and other poor people with a smile and the containers from last nights party
