27th May 2012. PENTECOST SUNDAY. YEAR B2.

Pentecost Prayer to Holy Spirit

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. Priest: Let us pray. O, God, who did instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that by the same Spirit we may be always truly wise and ever rejoice in His holy consolations. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen. Churches Together in Shaftesbury Pentecostal Service at Shaftesbury Abbey On Sunday 27th of May at 4pm, there will be the annual Pentecostal Service for Churches Together in Shaftesbury at the Abbey. Our worship, this year will take the theme 'Unity in Diversity' as we recall the joyful outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the disciples which gave birth to the universal church we know today. At the service, we will pray for ourselves as Christians and for all Christians across the world, that we may continue to grow together in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit and the love of God, proclaiming Jesus as Our Lord and Saviour. We hope you can join us. (Helen Jupp) Queen's Jubilee The nation and our town will be celebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on June 3rd with many parties and I'm sure many of you will be attending different events. Our Sunday Mass that weekend will be praying for her in a particular way and refer to her and the event with Scripture readings and prayers especially chosen for the event by our Bishops' Conference. wonderful devotional celebration for the whole parish this has been an important way for our FHC children to focus themselves on the reality of Christ's presence in the Eucharist. The procession will be at 5pm on 10th June and the FHC Mass will be Sunday 17th June. (Fr Dylan) First Holy Communion Mass 17th June, 11am Four children from our parish will be making their First Holy Communion this year. As always, it will be good to have a good crowd of parishioners to support them at the event. Please come along. (Fr Dylan) Parish Picnic Sunday July 22nd in the gardens of Sedgehill Manor. There will be trampolining, tennis and swimming for the young at heart. Croquet and conversation for those a little older. We can provide transport (Sedgehill is 3 miles out of town). We hope that some of our musicians will play to us during the course of the afternoon. Do put this date in your diary, and bring a picnic and your family with you. (Marian Bateson) Bishop's Visitation 23rd-24th June Every four years the Bishop comes and makes an official visitation of the parish. Its now our turn for him to come to us again on what might well be his last official visit to the parish as Bishop before retiring. Please come and welcome him at the weekend's Masses, and stay for tea and coffee after the 11am Mass. (Fr Dylan) Bishop's Retirement Our Bishop, Christopher Budd, is 75 today (May 27) and has told us that he has thus submitted his retirement to Rome. He has served us for 27 years and will be remembered as a gentle, kindly and affable pastor with an easy manner. He'll remain in office until his successor is appointed, a process that may take some time as there are a number of English bishops all retiring at the same time. (Fr Dylan) Novena Prayer for New Bishop To start our prayers for the selection of our new bishop there will be special novena starting this Monday, the day after the retirement age of our present bishop. The prayer will be said at the end of the Rosary after weekday Mass and will invoke an Englishwoman, Teresa Helena Higginson, whose cause for canonisation is being considered in Rome. Ven. Teresa was a 19th Century English school teacher and mystic who combined personal ordinariness with miraculous wonders. Booklets about her and about the "Devotion to the Sacred Head" that was revealed to her by the Lord are for sale in the porch, 50p. Heavenly Father, Through the Passion of Your Most Beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, Through the anguish that His Most Sacred Head, as the Seat of Divine and Eternal Wisdom suffered, I humbly implore You to mercifully grant the grace of a devout, faithful, and strong new Bishop of Plymouth. According to Your Divine and Holy Wisdom, through the intercession of Your servant, the Venerable Teresa Helena Higginson, by which her holiness maybe recognised and that she be counted

The Queens Diamond Jubilee Community Lunch A Community Lunch has been organised on Tuesday 5th June at Shaftesbury Town Hall to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. It is intended for those who would otherwise be spending the day alone and who would enjoy a meal and some company. Pre-booking is essential. See poster at the back of the church for contact details and some application forms. (Jane Jago) Appeal Next Weekend: St Barnabas Society Next weekend, 2-3rd June, there will be an appeal at the end the Masses. We occasionally have such one-off appeals from organisations to let the inform us of their work. The St Barnabas Society (formerly the 'Converts Aid Society') supports non-Catholic clergy converting to Catholicism. Presently 10% of all priests in England and Wales and 20% of all active priests of the Plymouth Diocese are such clergy converts and we our them a great deal. Seminarian Appeal Good news: Plymouth Diocese now has ten seminarians in training, nine more than four years ago. To help fund the greatly increased training costs, a diocesan wide appeal was launched last year. 240,000 has been raised but the Diocese is still in need of more funds if we are to secure our future. As last year, collection envelopes are available in the porch -please just put the envelopes in the normal Sunday collection and they'll be forwarded to the Diocese.
