The CFA Program

Administered by CFA Institute, the CFA Program offers you a graduate level curriculum and examination program intended to expand your working knowledge and practical skills relating to investment decision-making. Successful completion of the program and its requirements will earn you the CFA designation, one of the professions most valued credentials.

Program Levels The CFA program is divided into three levels, each of which builds on the preceding one and concludes with a full-day (six-hour) examination. Candidates must pass one examination before advancing to the next higher level, but may repeat an examination if they fail to pass.

Program Curriculum The CFA Program curriculum is drawn from a broad Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) that reflects the investment profession's current theory and practice with emphasis on asset valuation and portfolio management. The primary purpose of the CFA Program is to provide a fundamental knowledge of global investment management principles.

The CFA Examinations

Key to becoming a CFA charterholder is successful completion of the three, distinct CFA examinations generally referred to as the Level I, Level II, and Level III exams. Each of these six-hour examinations is administered in two sessions - morning and afternoon - each lasting three hours for a total duration of 360 minutes.

Exam Eligibility
The following are the entrance requirements for enrolling in the CFA Exam: You must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent OR Be a college/university senior (in the nal year of studies) scheduled to receive a bachelor's degree OR Prospective candidates without a degree may qualify if they have four years of acceptable professional work experience and/OR A combination of four years of college/university and professional work experience (experience need not be investment related. Summer, part-time, and internship positions do not qualify)

Exam Scheduling
The exams are offered by CFA Institute at hundreds of locations throughout the world. Level I is offered twice yearly in June and December; Levels II and III once annually in June. If you are a prospective candidate, you may register for your Level I exam once you have paid an initial enrollment fee to CFA Institute. In addition to the initial fee, you are required by CFA Institute to pay a registration fee for each exam. You may register for only one exam at a time, and cannot register for a subsequent exam until you have received your passing results for the prior level exam. Early registration can save you money because CFA Institute imposes a graduated fee schedule that increases over time.

Exam Topics
The topics emphasized on each exam are similar but vary in focus and depth by program level. The depth of your mastery of the curriculum will also be tested differently at each level. The major topics of focus and approximate weights by percent for each topic are shown in the accompanying chart.

The CFA Charter

Charterholder Requirements CFA Institute has established the following requirements for achieving the CFA charter: Successful completion of Levels I, II, and III examinations At least four years of acceptable professional work experience related to the investment decision-making process. This may be accrued prior to, during, or after completing the exams Membership in CFA Institute and application for membership with a CFA Institute society Agreement to comply with, among other things, the CFA Institute conditions, requirements, policies, and procedures as dened in the CFA Institute Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws, and Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct Once a charterholder, you must submit an annual Professional Conduct Statement and pay annual membership dues
