PhD Research Proposal

The ultimate goal of this research is to develop a synchronisation system for a multiuser wireless system that is primarily based on code division multiple access technology. Wireless communication, computer and sensor networks are expected to be key technologies in this century with a substantial impact on the economy and the environment and numerous potential applications. The inherent challenge of developing such a network is simultaneously accommodating many conflicting and demanding requirements, such as security of information transmission, reliable but simple signal processing algorithms and ultra-low power consumption. One of the most important requirements for the network is to provide a secure transmission of the information. In order to achieve this security a chaos-based multiuser system will be developed and investigated from synchronisation point of view. A major problem associated with the chaos-based communication, which is the sequence synchronisation between transmitter and receiver, will be addressed and solved in this research work. In order to develop the whole system, this research will incorporate the investigation of the carrier and clock synchronisation methods and techniques. The system based on chaotic sequences will be compared with the systems that use classical pseudorandom sequences and possibility of the coexistence of these sequences in the same system will be investigated. For that purpose a theoretical model will be developed and a complex simulator that uses various sequences will be designed and used for investigation. This research project will be focused on the formulation, theoretical analysis, simulation, and experimental investigation of synchronisation techniques in multi-user communication systems. It is expected that the research will yield new synchronisation methods and techniques which will increase the reliability and security of information transmission in wireless multiuser computer, communication and sensor networks. These techniques will be further developed into reliable, simple and power-efficient signal processing algorithms that could be applied primarily in sensor networks. Finally, a transceiver prototype for a multiuser wireless network will be built to practically verify the newly developed methods and techniques. The prototype will ultimately serve to demonstrate the feasibility of significantly reducing the transceiver power requirements while maintaining computational performance and speed, thereby solving one of the most important challenges of wireless network design.
