What is Lucid Dreaming


A lucid dream is any dream in which the person having it is aware they are indeed dreaming. The term lucid Dreaming was coined by a Dutch psychiatrist and writer by the name of Frederik (Willem) Van Eedeen (1860-1932). During a lucid dream, the dreamer may be able to control their participation of the dream and/or manipulate their experiences and environment with their imagination. Lucid dreams are realistic and vivid. Lucid dream initiation can occur if the person having a dream is able to conclude that they are in fact dreaming. Another way this can come along is if the person goes from a normal waking state directly into a dream state without any lapse of consciousness. Lucid dreaming dates back as far as 415 AD, in a letter written by St. Augustine of Hippo. Tibetan Buddhists and Bonpo practiced a form of dream yoga where they would be fully awake while dreaming in the 8th century. While adults train for this phenomena, children possess this skill naturally, due to their increased level of imagination.

But then, one night, I had the following dream: I dreamed I was involved in the plot of a horror film. It involved a haunted house, or abandoned abbey, where I supposed awful things were to take place. I walk by what I take to be this haunted building, only it has been transformed into a large, cheerily lit department store. I think this is a neat trick, it will attract people whom it can submit to its horrors. I enter and mill about. Everything looks normal, but I am fearfully looking everywhere for the incipient danger. But then, the thought occurs to me that this is a nightmare, and before I should face anything fearsome. This thought radically changes my outlook, and with an open and curious attitude I turn to the scenery, now floating along, looking for challenges and anything interesting. I note that some people are operating a video camera at one side of the room and the video screen is on the other side. I am intrigued by the idea of getting my own image displayed and orient myself in front of the camera, while looking at the screen.

The idea becomes sexual and I wish to display myself on the video screen. At first it is a struggle to get the screen to display anything other than my back from the waist up, clothed. But eventually, I get the right zone on the display and begin to remove my jeans. I begin to experience sexual arousal which intensifies quite rapidly, and within five seconds I have a wonderful orgasm-- the first I'd experienced in two months. I awaken immediately, feeling delightful. The very evening following this dream I easily experienced my first waking orgasm in two months. And in the few weeks following, though the rest of the anxiety-provoking situation remains, I have achieved climax whenever I desired. When I read the article about being conscious while in the dream state I became very interested in it for I was able to do the same thing. I have had such experiences while dreaming and have loved them. They have at times given me a way to escape from being confined. In one such dream I started realizing that if I wanted to I could control the environment here, for this was created by my subconscious, therefore subject to my conscious will. I thought for a moment of what I would like to do. The first thought that came through my mind was the fact that I had not been with a woman in years and this is what I wanted most, for even though it was only a dream, everything there was just like here, there was no difference. So as I sat there I looked at these two guys and told them that this was no more than a dream. I then told them that I have been in prison for a while now and that I wanted a woman to have sex with. Neither of them said anything but looked at me in a crazy way. I then repeated my desire and began to think upon it. The guy at the table then told me that I should go into the other room. So I got up, went to the door, and before entering concentrated on my desire. I was then in the room. There on the bed was lying a woman who had been in the dream earlier. I took my clothes off and got into bed with her. Throughout the entire sexual act I kept concentrating on keeping in a conscious state of mind,

because in previous such dreams I would panic or lose myself and fall out of the dream. There was total awareness of every moment of our sexual act, from beginning to end. After we were finished I rolled over on my side. As my head hit the pillow I felt that drifting feeling coming over me and realized that I was getting ready to pass into the blackness that I always find myself in when I leave these types of dreams and wake up.

Step by Step Training Guide on Lucid Dreaming Most books that teach lucid dreaming techniques are unnecessarily long. This short report is designed to get straight to the point. Happy lucid dreams my fellow dreamer. 1. Make preparations for your lucid dreams- This means figuring out the difference between a dream and reality. The brain believes dreams are real, no matter how fantastic they are. You must train yourself to know the difference.

Write down every dream you have and catagorize it. This will let you know when similar dreams come that it is a dream. Only when you know you're dreaming do you become a lucid dreamer. Set your lucid goals. Name a numerical amount of lucid dreams you plan on having during whatever amount of time you want. Make sure it's realistic to your accomplishments. Set your alarm clock two to three hours earlier than you originally wake up. Get up immediately when the alarm goes off. Handle your business until 30 minutes before returning to be. Repeatedly think about what it is you would like to accomplish in your lucid dreams. Return to bed and practice induction techniques. They are listed on the next page Get at least two hours of sleep but be completely relaxed. REM sleep is when lucid dreams commonly take place. After already having sleep, a person returning to sleep can achieve REM in a few minutes.

Lucid Dreaming Induction Techniques

The following list of induction techniques will help you awake your consciousness while sleep. Plan when to test your state This is an example and doesn't necessarily apply to you. Whenever you dream of an elevator, restroom, see an attractive girl or guy, etc. These are just examples. Pick five to ten occurrences when you will test your state. The point of testing your state is to prove whether you're awake or in a dream. This can be very difficult because while dreaming, everything may look real and physical sensations will actually hurt. Most dreams are about things that have concerned us recently. If you spend enough time throughout your day thinking about these things, then you will entertain the idea in your dreams. While awake, visualize yourself recognizing dreaming. Another way to become lucid is to make dream actions. Dream actions are intentions that you plan on accomplishing when you begin dreaming. If you're not lucid at the time, the action may be carried out by the subconscious, which then will be recognized as what you wanted to do. This will then let you know you are dreaming and this may turn your dream into a lucid dream.

Auto Suggestions Technique


Auto suggestions can work well in generating lucid dreams for you. All you have to do is tell yourself that you will have a lucid dream. Eventually your subconscious will pick up on it and start to believe it. Then ultimately lucid dreams will occur without incident. Relax Completely Lay down in bed and close your eyes gently. Relax your head, back, arms, and legs. Let go of all muscular and mental tension and breathe slowly and restfully. Let go all thoughts including worries and plans. While deeply relaxed, tell yourself you're going to have a lucid dream either tonight or another time. Put yourself in the thought that you generally are expecting a lucid dream tonight or some other time. Don't try to force it too soon or disappointment may kill your chances. Post-Hypnotic Suggestions Post-hypnotic suggestions will have a better effect than auto suggestions but not everyone can be subjected to hypnosis. Two groups of 15 college women, one PHS and the other in the control were hypnotized. The PHS group had dream symbols they pictured in the hypnotic state but the control group didn't. The PHS reported longer lucid dreams than the control group and continued to have them. Science Behind Lucid Dreaming


As you know, alpha brainwaves are dominant when dreaming in the conscious mind. At the same time, the subconscious takes over.
