The Crisis in Two Pacic Rim Economies

Higher Education and Employment in Mexico and Thailand
E. RANGEL, The University of Colima, Mexico and A. IVANOVA, Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, Mexico
The Crisis in Two Pacic Rim Economies: Higher Education and Employment in Mexico and Thailand is the rst study that provides a comparative analysis of the development of higher education and employment policies of two Pacic Rim economies, one Latin American and one Asian. Although distant geographically, closer inspection reveals remarkable similarities between Mexico and Thailand in the areas of education and employment; resemblances that can provide learning opportunities for both. Another important similarity is the economic crisis both countries endured in the last decade of the 20th century, including the rst nancial crisis of the 21st century. After presenting a brief panorama of their world position with regard to economic development, the authors take into account the development plans for Thailand and Mexico, placing great importance on proactively developing human resources and directly linking human development to labour markets and economic growth. To delve even deeper into this complex question, they developed and applied an opinion survey in situ for members of the academic community, government ofcials and private sector entrepreneurs from both countries in order to gain greater insight into how the different actors view their current economic situation. The authors conclude that important changes must be made in the higher education systems of both Mexico and Thailand in order to produce the highly skilled human capital required to increase efciency and competitiveness. They hope to contribute to the process of study and reection necessary to develop more integral plans in the areas of education and economic development for Pacic Rim countries. Furthermore, they hope the text can provide lessons and promote dialogue about Mexicos and Thailands participation within the highly dynamic Asia Pacic economic region.

Sustainability Today
C.A. BREBBIA, Wessex Institute of Technology, UK
This book contains additional research papers submitted for a meeting on sustainable development and planning organised in 2011 by the Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT). WIT has a long and very successful record of organising conferences on the topic of sustainability, which requires an interdisciplinary approach. Any sustainable solutions that are derived solely from the perspective of a single discipline may have unintended damaging consequences that create new problems. Thus effective sustainable solutions require the collaboration of scientists and engineers from various disciplines, as well as planners, architects, environmentalists, policy makers, and economists. These experts must not only communicate with each other effectively, but also understand the social aspects of the problem at hand. The contents of the book reect that interdisciplinary approach.

Environmental Impact

C.A. BREBBIA, Wessex Institute of Technology, UK; et al.

Containing papers for the rst International Conference on Environmental Impact and Development organized by the Wessex Institute of Technology, Environmental Impact lls the need for inter-disciplinary coverage of the most serious problems that affect sustainable development. The basic premise is that development projects need to consider the most pressing issues related to environmental impacts in order to provide complete solutions. The current emphasis on sustainable development is a consequence of a general awareness of the various environmental problems that result from our modern society. This has led to the need to assess the impact of economic investments on the environment. Investment assessment and environmental economics need to be discussed in an integrated way, in accordance with the principles of sustainability, considering the social and environmental aspects of new investments, as well as possible environmental damage, including the destruction of natural resources and larger releases of waste and pollution into the environment. The book covers such topic as: Environmental policies and planning; Environmental assessments; Cost benet analysis; Risk analysis; Natural resources management; Rehabilitation assessment; Social issues and stakeholders participation; Decision support systems; Remediation costs; Environmental Toxicology; Air, water, and soil contamination; Ecosystems health; Environmental health risk; Biodegradation and bioremediation; Ecotoxicity of emerging chemicals; Petroleum contamination; Bioaccumulation and biomonitoring; Brownelds rehabilitation and development; Monitoring of brownelds.

The Business of Biodiversity

M. EVERARD, University of the West of England, UK

The title of the book denes its primary focus: the linkage between biodiversity and business. The book is an accessible tome written primarily for people in business, but also in academia as well as in NGOs and in government, and those with a general interest. The text is deliberately brief to help the reader access the information quickly and is written in an engaging manner. Biodiversity used to be an issue of high acknowledged importance, for example following the Convention on Biological Diversity (introduced at the Rio Summit in 1992) and the UKs rst Biodiversity Strategy shortly thereafter. Yet, despite subsequent global commitments to reversing the rate of species loss made at the WSSD (Johannesburg 2002) and later endorsed by the EU (the Gothenburg Target), the key role of business in achieving a sustainable relationship with biodiversity has received little explicit attention over recent years. A re-appraisal has been due. Undertaking it has been rewarding since more recent insights into biodiversity suggest novel, self-benecial responses for business.

Wind Power Generation and Wind Turbine Design

W. TONG, Kollmorgen Corporation, USA
This comprehensive book is a collection of 21 chapters on wind power and the design of wind turbines...A suitable number of graphs and basic mathematics, combined with clear writing, make the text ow smoothly. Contributors consistently cite recent scientic and commercial publications, making the book an up-to-date reference. CHOICE March 2011 Vol. 48 No. 7 This book provides the wind power industry and the energy research community with comprehensive up-to-date information on advanced design techniques and practical approaches for a form of energy that is becoming increasingly important. It addresses all the major concerns in wind power generation and wind turbine design and includes some of the more recent developments in the eld. The book is a useful and timely contribution to the technical literature on wind power. Along with the rising energy demand in the 21st century and the growing recognition of global warming and environmental pollution, energy supply has become an integral and cross-cutting element of every countrys economy. In recent years, more and more countries have prioritised sustainable, renewable, and clean energy sources such as wind, solar, hydropower, biomass, etc., as the replacements for fossil fuels. Wind power is the fastest growing alternative energy segment, providing an attractive cost structure relative to other alternative energy. Wind energy has played a signicant role in North American and European countries, and some developing countries such as China and India. In 2009, over 37 GW of new wind capacity were installed throughout the world. There is no doubt that wind power will play a major role as the world moves towards a sustainable energy future.

Achieving sustainable chemistry based on clean processing routes, efcient use of resources, renewable materials, adequate management systems and other activities is not only essential for the future of a competitive chemical industry but also for a sustainable and healthy society and environment. Key to sustainable chemistry are innovative and cleaner technologies and the development of appropriate business models, performance measurements, and better-integrated management. This book contains papers on the latest academic and industrial research in the eld presented at the rst international conference convened on sustainable chemistry.

Most islands cannot provide all the resources required by a large seasonal tourist population; in many cases basic requirements such as water and energy, as well as agricultural produce, must therefore be imported. Authorities need to carefully evaluate the impact of large seasonal population increases on the community and the resulting socioeconomic factors, as well as issues related to transportation and communication, all of which should be part of an overall strategy. They must also ensure year-round economic activity in order to achieve true sustainability. The topics covered include: Tourism Impact and Strategies; Community Issues; Changing Climate and Environment; Infrastructure; Transport Issues; Natural Resources; Energy Issues; Risk and Safety; Waste Management; Island Services.

Food and Environment

The Quest for a Sustainable Future
V. POPOV, Wessex Institute of Technology, UK and C.A. BREBBIA, Wessex Institute of Technology, UK
The many advances in food production over the past century have made it possible to feed the whole of humanity. But food production and processing can have detrimental effects on the environment. Major challenges remain with industrial-scale farming. Higher productivity and larger volumes should not come at the expense of product quality or animal suffering. Despite their importance, the consequences of food-related problems have not been sufciently considered. It is essential to understand the impact that food production processes and the demands of rising living standards can have on the food consumed daily by the worlds people. Of particular importance are the effects on human health and the well-being of the population, as well as the more general issues related to possible damage to the environment and ecology. This book includes contributions presented at the rst international conference convened to examine these challenges. Topics include: Impact of food production on the Environment; Contamination of Food; Food Processing Issues; Traceability and Temperature Control; Characterisation of Foodplants. The book will be of interest to food scientists and nutritionists, as well as agricultural, ecological, and environmental health experts interested in all these challenges.

Island Sustainability
S. FAVRO, Hydrographic Institute of the Republic of Croatia, Croatia, C.A. BREBBIA, Wessex Institute of Technology, UK
Current global socio-economic trends call attention to the endangered conditions of relatively conned environments all over the world. Many of these regions face problems of depopulation and lack of adequate infrastructures. The problems are aggravated for the case of islands, which have limited resources and few possibilities of developing different types of supporting infrastructures. Many islands depend on tourism for their economic survival. Most of them however, cannot provide all the resources required to maintain a large seasonal population. In many cases basic requirements such as water and energy, as well as agricultural produce, need to be imported. The impact of large seasonal population increases in the community and the resulting socio-economic factors need to be carefully evaluated, as well as issues related to transportation and communication, all of which should be part of an overall strategy. Of primary importance in many cases is to ensure all year round economic activities in order to achieve a permanent and completely sustainable use of the islands potential. This book contains papers dealing with projects, initiatives and experiences related to various island issues. By using the experience of economically developed island environments, it is possible to determine how to ensure the development of other island communities, not only to prevent depopulation but to encourage new settlement. Those projects can serve as guidelines for initiatives in less developed islands, adapting the experiences to specic regional, cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.

Sustainable Chemistry

G. RENIERS, University of Antwerp, Belgium and C.A. BREBBIA, Wessex Institute of Technology, UK
As the demands of society increase in their quest for safer, better and more convenient products, the chemical industry is faced on the one hand with the possible depletion of natural resources and on the other with a large share of responsibility for the damage that may be caused to the environment and the population by their products. The main area of chemical activity consists of the conversion of various base metals into substances and materials with new chemical and physical properties. A substantial amount of research is being carried out regarding this conversion process, which now must incorporate sustainability requirements. In addition, other associated activities, such as the chemical supply chain, performance measurements and different types of management tasks, must meet sustainability standards.

This book contains papers presented at The Sustainable City 2010 conference, which was the sixth occurrence of the International Conference on Urban Regeneration and Sustainability. A sustainable city is widely recognised as one that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In The Sustainable City VI many interrelated aspects of the urban environment, from transport and mobility to social exclusions and crime prevention, are addressed. Innovative tools are required for understanding the high complexity of contemporary cities. It is urgent to promote a more scientic approach to urban studies, inspired by Prigogines dissipative structures, and to highlight relations between different systems and between systems and the environment. This book addresses those needs. The research papers in the book covers: Planning, Development and Management; Landscape Planning and Design; The Community and the City; Urban Strategies; UrbanRural Relationships; Architectural Issues; Cultural Heritage Issues; Waste Management; Case Studies; Environmental Management; Energy Issues.

Sustainable Tourism IV

Y. VILLACAMPA ESTEVE, Universidad de Alicante, Spain; A.A. MAMMOLI, The University of New Mexico, USA; C.A. BREBBIA, Wessex Institute of Technology, UK
It has been clear for some time that the way in which our society exists, operates, and develops is strongly inuenced by the way in which energy is produced and consumed. No industrial process can proceed without an adequate energy supply, and without industrial production, society lacks the commodities on which it depends. Our energy systems have evolved over a long period and continue evolving in response to the needs of both Industry and Society. This evolution involves technological development and innovation, especially now that we need to look beyond simple fuel combustion as a source of energy and consider both greater efciency in the use of energy and new ways of producing it. The Third International Conference convened on the subject was the latest in a biennial series that brings together experts from around the world. Their papers, contained in this book, include research on: Renewable Energy Technologies; Biomass Processes and Biofuels; Energy Management; Energy Policies; Energy and The Environment; Energy Analysis; Energy Efciency; Co2 Sequestration and Storage.

C.A. BREBBIA, Wessex Institute of Technology, UK and F.D. PINEDA, Universidad Complutense, Spain
Sustainable Tourism IV consists of research papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Sustainable Tourism. The biennial conference is organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology. The demands of tourism can contribute to the destruction of the natural and cultural environment upon which it depends. The development of tourism can result in the degradation of natural landscapes that paradoxically attract tourists to such areas. The natural and cultural landscapes capacity to accommodate the local and worldwide effects of tourism, the typology thereof and its implications for the economy and society constitute very important study objectives. The papers in this book address these issues. Featured topics include: Tourism Strategies; Tourism as a Tool of Development; Tourism Impact; Tourism and Protected Areas; Rural Tourism; Community Involvement; IT and Tourism; Climate Change and Tourism; Environmental Issues; Art, Architecture and Culture; Modelling; Emergent Strategies for Tourism Development; Landscape and Tourism; Tourism and Urban Planning.

Containing papers presented at the Fifth International Conference on Sustainable Tourism, this multi-disciplinary book examines the sophisticated and complex tourism industry and sustainable tourism practices, including global travel trends, destination and site management, and ecological tourism. The biennial conference, organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology, was rst held in 2004. Tourism has become a major international industry, with many countries all over the world relying on the income it produces. Its economic advantages as a major source of nance and employment lead to its active promotion by governments and other institutions, independent of the consequences on the environment, ecology and social structure of affected regions. The book includes such topics as: Tourism Strategies; Tourism as a Tool of Development; Emergent Strategies for Tourism Development; Environmental Issues; Climate Change and Effects of Natural Hazards in Tourism; Tourism and Protected Areas; Art, Architecture and Culture; Rural Tourism; Modelling; Community Involvement; Tourism and the Built Environment; Renovation of Mature Destinations; Heritage Tourism; Medical Tourism.

Management of Natural Resources, Sustainable Development and Ecological Hazards III

C.A. BREBBIA, Wessex Institute of Technology, UK and S.S. ZUBIR, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Malaysia
This book contains the proceedings of the third in a now-biennial series of conferences organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology around the urgent need to determine solutions regarding sustainable development before our planet reaches a point of irreversibility. The aggressive search for new sources of energy and materials, the rapid rate at which natural resources are being consumed, and the destructiveness of the resulting pollution are all having a negative impact on the planet that needs to be stopped, if not reversed. The transdisciplinary papers in this book, presented at the Third International Conference on Management of Natural Resources of Natural Resources, Sustainable Development, and Ecological Hazards, suggest constructive principles and policies for a way forward. The papers examine ethical, political and social issues, health, safety and risk, lessons from nature, planning and development, and new technologies.

City out of Chaos Sustainable Development and Planning V

C.A. BREBBIA, Wessex Institute of Technology, UK and E. BERIATOS, University of Thessaly, Greece
This book contains the proceedings of the latest in a series of biennial conferences on the topic of sustainable regional development that began in 2003. Organised by the Wessex Institute of Technology, the conference series provides a common forum for all scientists specialising in the range of subjects included within sustainable development and planning. It has become apparent that planners, environmentalists, architects, engineers, policy makers, and economists have to work together in order to ensure that planning and development can meet our present needs without compromising future generations. The use of modern technologies in planning gives us new potential to monitor and prevent environmental degradation. In recent years, in many countries there has been an increase in spatial problems that has led to a planning crisis. Planning problems are often connected with uneven development, deterioration of the quality of urban life, and destruction of the environment. The increasing urbanisation of the world, coupled with the global issues of environmental pollution, resource shortage, and economic restructuring, demand that we make our cities places in which it is worth living. Problems of environmental management and planning are not restricted to urban areas. Environments such as rural areas, forests, coastal regions, and mountains face their own problems that urgently require solutions in order to avoid irreversible damage. Effective strategies for management should consider planning and regional development, two closely related disciplines, and emphasise the demand to handle these matters in an integrated way. The topics covered by the papers in the book include: Regional Planning; City Planning; Sustainability in the Built Environment; Cultural Heritage; Environmental Management; Resources Management; Social and Political Issues; Rural Developments; Sustainable Solutions in Developing Countries; Transportation; Container Maritime Transport; Energy Resources.

In the Wake of a Local Government Initiative

Istanbul Kkekmece: Urban Regeneration Project
S. RAMAZANOGULLARI TURGUT, Yildiz Technical University, Turkey and E.. CEYLAN, Kkekmece Municipality Planning Department, Turkey
In the Wake of a Local Government Initiative: Kkekmece: Ayazma-Tepest Urban Regeneration Project is the rst and so far only publication to elaborate on all the stages of one of the many Urban Regeneration projects implemented in Turkey in recent years. In this publication the authors detail the operation and management processes of the municipality where the initiative is taking place, in addition to the actors involved and the duties they have taken over. The book not only examines the Kkekmece Ayazma-Tepest Urban Regeneration project, but it also gives a clear account of the positive and negative aspects of the process. To date, especially in the western world, a large number of scientically signicant books have been released on some such initiatives (mainly in the UK), yet there has been no widely disseminated volume on Turkeys approach and projectbuilding methodologies. Unlike in the Western world, urban regeneration in Turkey is a means to overcome the challenges created by the growth of unauthorised housing. In the case of Turkey this publication will serve as a step in developing more publications, as well as present the reader with an example for comparison. The authors prepared the book in order to bring to light the Kkekmece Ayazma-Tepest Urban Regeneration Project and all its associated dynamics. The project has been under way since 2004 and is the rst redevelopment project in Turkey with well adjusted social projects implemented in parallel. The Ayazma-Tepest region is historically a location of unplanned/ illegal settlements. Unlike a standard project, this initiative was embarked upon with a genuine academic enthusiasm and an investigative perspective, making it valuable to share publicly all phases, timelines and current achievements.

Urban Self Organization and Sustainability

R.M. PULSELLI and E. TIEZZI, University of Siena, Italy
pragmatic reading for urbanists and designers interested in gaining a general introduction to complextiy theory, as well as offering some clear examples of novel analytical tools. Canadian Journal of Urban Research The rhythms of technology and nature are out of phase. This fact underlies the global environmental crisis. Man-made perturbations, even small local ones, can trigger large-scale effects. To reinstate an alliance between humans and nature, as described by Prigogine, the father of evolutionary physics, it is necessary to learn to observe the general behaviour and evolution of real systems, including human systems in their context. The theories of chaos and complexity can help us to understand these systems: all natural and man-made processes on our planet have a common matrix and are interconnected. Evolutionary physics is the study of the emergence of novelty from the complex fabric of relationships of which we are part. It explains the formation of living structures and their evolution in a dynamic world. Dissipative structures, steady state systems, self-organization, uctuations and feedback are some of the concepts considered by the authors in their treatment of complex systems such as climate, society, economies and cities. The book is specically concerned with cities. The aim of the authors is to promote a new operative approach to the study of urban systems through an integrated, systemic view of their components and relations with the outside. Evolutionary science opens new development prospects for cities in the framework of sustainability. Readers will nd discussions on monitoring techniques, environmental accounting, sustainability indicators, ways of representing cities through systems language, measurement of ows and stocks, mobile geographies and dynamic mapping. The authors, an architect and a physical chemist, draw examples from literature, contemporary art, oscillating chemical reactions, architecture, invisible cities, imaginary characters, snow akes and hurricanes. The book represents a meeting of science, technology, arts and philosophy, which it is hoped will produce something new.
