Brothers and Sisters, I have good news! Our baptisms were of repentance, but so much more. Today, as we celebrate Jesus baptism on this Epiphany Sunday, we also remember our own baptisms. For those of you who have not been baptized, I hope you get a sense of the significance of baptism for us in the Lutheran tradition. When we were baptized, our baptisms were of repentance, but so much more! When we celebrate the sacrament of baptism, we proclaim that we are made new in Christ, but we should also be brave enough to hear the words that God spoke to Jesus, as he emerged from the Jordan River, as words spoken to us, as well. As we remember and celebrate our baptisms, we should be brave enough to hear God say to each of us, You are my child, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. You are my child, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. I dont think we often hear these words as words spoken to us. This is understandable because, well, they are words from heaven spoken to God incarnateto the Son of Godand they were not spoken to us. But at the same time, through baptism, I think we can allow ourselves to hear these words that were originally spoken to Jesus, as words spoken to us todayand here is why: Our baptisms and Jesus baptism are fundamentally different. When Jesus was baptized, it was not so that he could repent or be forgiven from sinhe was God incarnate. When Jesus was baptized, it was not so that he could be welcomed into a new communityafter all, he was

the very foundation on which this community would be built. Jesus baptism was more about the revelation of the relationship between God and Jesus, rather than the forgiveness of sin. Jesus baptism was about God identifying Emmanuel, and affirming that God is indeed with usGod became like us, and in doing so drew near to us. It is in Jesus baptism, and in Gods words to Jesus as he emerges from the Jordan River, that there is an epiphany as to the relationship between God and Jesus. As God says, You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased, we know exactly who Jesus is: he is God incarnate...he is God, in human form. Our baptisms, on the other hand, are about repentance and forgiveness. Our baptisms are about proclaiming our new life in Christ. Our baptisms are about promising to live, and to nurture our children, in accordance with Gods love. Our baptisms are about becoming part of a new community, based not on the rules of this world, but on Gods grace for all of creation. Our baptisms and Jesus baptism are fundamentally different, yet they end up at the same place. Even though they are different, they end with Gods proclamation to Jesus, and Gods proclamation to us through Jesus: You are my child, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. Our baptisms through Christ are much more than repentance. Our baptisms are about celebrating that God came to us in a new way through a human being and that has called each of us to participate in Gods community of graceand thanks be to God for that. Amen.

Hermanos y hermanas, Tengo Buenas Nuevas! Nuestro bautismo fue de arrepentimiento, pero hay mucho ms en l. Hoy, mientras celebramos el bautizo de Jess, tambin recordamos nuestro propio bautizo. Para todos ustedes que no han sido bautizados, espero que entiendan el significado del bautismo para nosotros en la tradicin luterana. Cuando fuimos bautizados, fue por arrepentimiento, pero es an mucho ms. Cuando celebramos los bautismos, proclamamos que somos nuevos en Cristo, pero tambin debiramos ser lo suficientemente valientes para escuchar las palabras que Dios dijo a Jess, cuando sala del Ro Jordn, estas palabras tambin se dirigen a nosotros. As como recordamos y celebramos nuestro bautismo, debiramos ser valientes para escuchar lo que Dios nos dice: T eres mi hijo, a quien amo; estoy complacido contigo. T eres mi hijo, a quien amo; estoy complacido contigo. No creo a menudo que cuando escuchamos las palabras de Dios dirigidas a Jess cuando emerge del Ro Jordn, tambin son dirigidas a nosotros. Esto es incomprensible porque, fueron palabras provenientes del cielo al Dios encarnadoel Hijo de Diosy no son dirigidas a nosotros. Pero al mismo tiempo, a travs del bautismo, creo que nos podemos permitir escuchar estas palabras que originalmente se dirigieron a Jess, como palabras dirigidas a nosotros hoyy aqu est el por qu Nuestro bautismo en Jess es fundamentalmente diferente. Cuando Jess fue bautizado, no fue para que l pudiera arrepentirse o fueran perdonados sus pecadosl era el Dios encarnado. Cuando Jess fue bautizado, no fue para que l pudiera ser bienvenido a una nueva comunidadl era el fundamento en el cual esta comunidad sera edificada. El bautismo de Jess fue ms sobre la revelacin de la relacin entre Dios y Jess, que sobre el perdn de los pecados. El bautismo de Jess fue Dios identificando a Emmanuel, y afirmando que en verdad Dios est con nosotrosporque Dios nos quiere y de esta forma se acerca a nosotros. Es en el bautismo de Jess y en las palabras de Dios a Jess cuando emerge del Ro, que hay una Epifana en la relacin entre Dios y Jess. Como dice Dios: T eres mi hijo, a quien amo; estoy complacido contigo Sabemos exactamente quin es Jess: Dios encarnado.

Nuestro bautismo, por otra parte, es acerca del arrepentimiento y del perdn. Nuestro bautismo es acerca de la proclamacin de la nueva vida en Cristo. Nuestro bautismo es acerca de la vida y la educacin de nuestros nios de acuerdo al amor de Dios. Nuestro bautismo es acerca de una nueva comunidad basada, no en la reglas de este mundo, sino en la Gracia de Dios para este mundo. Nuestro bautismo y el bautismo de Jess son fundamentalmente diferentes, sin embargo terminaron en el mismo lugar. Aunque fueron diferentes, terminaron con la proclamacin de Dios a Jess, y la proclamacin de Dios para nosotros a travs de Jess: T eres mi hijo, a quien amo; estoy complacido contigo. Nuestro bautismo a travs de Cristo es ms que arrepentimiento. Nuestro bautismo es acerca de la celebracin de que Dios lleg a nosotros de una nueva forma mediante una persona- y nos llam a cada uno de nosotros para ser parte de, y participar en, la comunidad de Dios basada en la Graciay gracias sean dadas a Dios por esto. Amn.
