Wireless Configuration for Windows 7

Introduction
UCMerced offers a Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g wireless network to all students, faculty, and staff, which can be accessed almost anywhere on campus. This network is available to all wirelessenabled computers running Window,s Mac OS X, or Linux.

Network and Sharing Center


Windows 7 includes a feature called the Network and Sharing Center, available on all editions of Windows 7. This feature allows you to monitor the status of your network connection, connect to other networks, and troubleshoot any network issues you may have. In this document, we will guide you through the process of connecting to the UCMerced wireless network using Windows 7.

Connecting to the UC Merced Wireless Network


Open the Network and Sharing Center
You can open the Network and Sharing Center by right-clicking the network icon (circled below) located at the bottom right of your screen, next to the clock.

A menu should appear, with the last option being the Network and Sharing Center. Left-Click on it to have the Network and Sharing Center window appear. If you have trouble looking for the network icon,

you can also open the network and Sharing Center by clicking on the circular Windows icon in the lower left corner and typing Network and Sharing to have a link to the Network and Sharing Center appear at the top of the menu.

Once you open the Network and Sharing Center, click on Setup a connection or network, located where it is listed under Change your networking settings.

Setting up the Connection


Another window should appear, providing you with various options:

Select Manually connect to a wireless network and click on Next to continue onto the next screen:

Fill in the following information (so it matches the above picture): Network Name: UCMerced Security Type: 802.1X Check the box Start this connection automatically.

Click next to continue to the next screen.

At this point, it should say Successfully added UCMerced. A yellow balloon may appear at the lower right corner, but you can ignore it for now. Click on Change connection settings and a new dialog box will appear.

Make sure Connect automatically when this network is in range is checked and leave the other two options unchecked. Click on the Security tab to see the next dialog box.

Make sure all the settings match the dialog box to the left. Security type: 802.1X Encryption: WEP Choose a network authentication method: Protected EAP (PEAP)

Click on the Settings button to have another dialog box appear.

Uncheck the box for Validate server certificate. Make sure Select Authentication Method is set to Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).

Click on Configure, for another dialog box to appear.

Uncheck the box in this dialog box.

Press OK through the remaining dialog windows to return to the Successfully Added UCMerced window, which you may now Close.

Logging onto the UCMerced Wireless Network with your UCMNetID


Now that your wireless connection is setup, you can log onto the UCMerced wireless network with your UCMNetID. If you are a student, you should already have a UCMNetID. If you do not have a UCMNetID, please visit the UCM Portal at http://my.ucmerced.edu for more information about obtaining your UCMNetID or resetting your password.

Once youre ready to log onto the UCMerced wireless network with your UCMNetID, click on the balloon in the lower right corner:

Once youve clicked on the balloon, another dialog box should appear, prompting for your login credentials.

Enter your login credentials into the window, and click OK.
If prompted to Select a Location for this network, choose either Home or Work.

Now youll be connected to the UCMerced wireless network and able to browse the internet!
