The Craft Of Technical & Scientific Writing & Presentation is a two-day workshop, Technical & Scientific Writing on Day 1 and Technical & Scientific Presentation on Day 2. PROFILE
Melissa Marshall is a lecturer of Communication Arts & Sciences at the Pennsylvania State University. She works with the College of Engineering to design and implement effective teaching methods of communication skills for engineering and science students. Ms. Marshall co-developed, piloted and is the lead instructor for the Effective Technical & Scientific Presentations course that is offered to engineering students at Penn State. In addition, Ms. Marshall gives lectures and workshops on The Craft of Technical & Scientific Presentations at other institutions such as the Harvard Medical School, New York Academy of Sciences, Cornell Universitys Weill Cornell Medical College, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, Laval University (Quebec), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, the National Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Areva Nuclear Power, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Sandia National Laboratories, United Technologies, Simula Research Laboratory (Oslo, Norway) and more. Additionally, Marshall was invited to co-teach a na national course on scientific communication to No Norwegian PhD students in the science fields. M Marshall has provided science and engineering ou outreach communication workshops to Engineering Am Ambassador Programs at the University of Connecticut, Re Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Worcester Po Polytechnic Institute. She has also provided several tra training workshops to establish and maintain the r Pr Prepare Science Awareness Program at the University of Oslo and Simula Research Laboratory in Norway. COURSE CONTENT DAY1 THE CRAFT OF TECHNICAL & SCIENTIFIC WRITING


The Craft of Technical & Scientific Writing is a one-day short course designed to help scientists, engineers, and technical professionals improve the way that they communicate their work in journal papers, conference publications, and proposals. The course has three goals: (1) to learn the stylistic differences between strong writing and weak writing in research documents; (2) to make the writing process more efficient; and (3) to break ground on a research document.

The course, which focuses on research presentations, has four goals: (1) to learn effective strategies for structuring research presentations; (2) to rethink the design of visual aids; (3) make technical presentations more understandable and memorable; and (4) to learn how to translate the passion for the work into confidence during a presentation.
