ThisDSPbasedradiowasdesignedforSCADA,telemetryandindustrialapplicationsinthe136174MHz,215240 MHzVHF,406.1512MHzUHF,and928960MHzfrequencyranges. GuardiansupportsserialRemoteTerminalUnits(RTU)andprogrammablelogiccontrollers(PLC).

Warning:ThetransmitantennaportmustnotbeconnecteddirectlytothereceiveantennaportoftheDualPort orFullDuplexGuardian.Excessivepowerintothereceiveantennaportwilldamagetheradio.Inputpowerto thereceivershouldnotexceed17dBm(50mW). ASiteSurveyisanRFpropagationstudyoftheRFpathbetweentwopointsorbetweenonepointandmultiple points.UHFradiosignalstravelprimarilybylineofsightandobstructionsbetweenthesendingandreceiving stationswillaffectsystemperformance.Signalpropagationisalsoaffectedbyattenuationfromobstructionssuch asterrain,foliage,orbuildingsinthetransmissionpath.ASiteSurveyisrecommendedformostprojectsto determinetheoptimalRFpathsforeachlink.ThisisespeciallytruewhenmorethanoneRFcoverageareais required.ASiteSurveywilldeterminethebestunitlocationfortheRelayPoints.

2.4

SELECTINGANTENNAANDFEEDLINE

TheGuardiancanbeusedwithavarietyofantennatypes.Theexactstyleuseddependsonthephysicalsizeand layoutofasystem.TheGuardiandevicehasbeentestedandapprovedwithantennashavingamaximumgainof 10dBi.

2.4.1 ANTENNAGAIN
Antennagainisusuallymeasuredincomparisontoadipole.Adipoleactsmuchlikethefilamentofaflashlight bulb:itradiatesenergyinalmostalldirections.Onebulblikethiswouldprovideverydimroomlighting.Adda reflectorcapableofconcentratingalltheenergyintoanarrowangleofradiationandyouhaveaflashlight.Within thatbrightspotonthewall,thelightmightbeathousandtimesgreaterthanitwouldbewithoutthereflector. Theresultingbulbreflectorcombinationhasagainof1000,or30dB,comparedtothebulbalone.Gaincanbe achievedbyconcentratingtheenergybothverticallyandhorizontally,asinthecaseoftheflashlightandYagi antenna.Gaincanbealsobeachievedbyreducingtheverticalangleofradiation,leavingthehorizontalalone.In thiscase,theantennawillradiateequallyinallhorizontaldirections,butwilltakeenergythatotherwisewould havegoneskywardsanduseittoincreasethehorizontalradiation. Therequiredantennaimpedanceis50ohms.Toreducepotentialradiointerference,theantennatypeanditsgain shouldbechosentoensuretheeffectiveisotropicradiatedpower(EIRP)isnotmorethanrequiredforsuccessful communication.

Alineofsight(LOS)pathbetweenstationsishighlydesirableandprovidesthemostreliablecommunicationslink inallcases.Alineofsightpathcanoftenbeachievedbymountingeachstationantennaonatowerorother elevatedstructurethatraisesithighenoughtoclearsurroundingterrainandotherobstructions. Therequirementforacleartransmissionpathdependsonthedistancetobecoveredbythesystem.Ifthesystem istocoveralimiteddistance,say35miles,thensomeobstructionsinthetransmissionpathmaybetolerable.For longerrangesystems,anyobstructioncouldcompromisetheperformanceofthesystem,orblocktransmission entirely. Thesignalstrength(RSSI)atthereceivermustexceedthereceiversensitivitybyanamountknownasthefade margintoprovidereliableoperationundervariousconditions.Fademargin(expressedindB)isthemaximum tolerablereductioninreceivedsignalstrength,whichstillprovidesanacceptablesignalquality.Thiscompensates forreducedsignalstrengthduetomultipath,slightantennamovementorchangingatmosphericlosses.CalAmp recommendsa30dBfademarginformostprojects.Table23showstheRSSIversusReliability.

CalAmp warrants to the original purchaser for use ("Buyer") that data telemetry products manufactured by DRL ("Products") are free from defects in material and workmanship and will conform to DRL's published technical specificationsforaperiodof,exceptasnotedbelow,one(1)yearfromthedateofshipmenttoBuyer.DRLmakesno warranty with respect to any equipment not manufactured by DRL, and any such equipment shall carry the original equipmentmanufacturer'swarrantyonly.DRLfurthermakesnowarrantyastoandspecificallydisclaimsliabilityfor, availability,range,coverage,gradeofserviceoroperationoftherepeatersystemprovidedbythecarrierorrepeater operator.Anyreturnshippingchargesforthirdpartyequipmenttotheirrespectiverepairfacilitiesarechargeableand willbepassedontotheBuyer. IfanyProductfailstomeetthewarrantysetforthaboveduringtheapplicablewarrantyperiodandisreturnedtoa locationdesignatedbyDRL.DRL,atitsoption,shalleitherrepairorreplacesuchdefectiveProduct,directlyorthrough an authorized service agent, within thirty (30) days of receipt of same.
