TAPEsTRy WAfs: BRAncH OffIcE cOnsOlIdATIOn And fIlE mAnAgEmEnT
Enterprises with branch offces are facing a growing number of IT challenges. For example,
WAN latency issues impact fle access performance and make it harder to implement
data center-class IT services at branch offces. Network issues also complicate effcient
fle sharing and often require multiple copies of data to manage, store, and back up.
Tapestry WAFS solves many of these branch offce IT issues, including storage and
server proliferation, data backup and restore, and rising ownership costs. It does so by
maximizing performance and reliability through a unique WAN-optimized fle sharing
protocol that operates between a core appliance located at a central site and edge
appliances at remote locations.
This unique design enables Tapestry WAFS to deliver read-write fle access at Local
Area Network (LAN)-like speeds across WANs, providing the foundation to streamline
a wide range of branch offce IT operations. Compared to alternative offerings,
Tapestry WAFS provides a much wider range of business and technological advantages
including higher performance, greater operational effciency, and all the benefts of
centralization and consolidation. Additional advantages include:
Enterprise-class security, resiliency, and reliability
Greater fexibility with unique stackable services
Seamless integration with existing IT infrastructure
lowering costs with Tapestry WAfs
Tapestry WAFS helps reduce overall storage and administrative expenses in a variety of
ways, such as:
Increasing server and storage asset utilization
Reducing capital expenditures and ongoing management costs
Improving both administrator and user productivity
Freeing up network bandwidth to handle larger workloads
One of the greatest advantages of Tapestry WAFS is its ability to improve operating
effciency by enabling distributed enterprises to consolidate equipment and centrally
manage their branch offce IT services. In this way, Tapestry WAFS helps reduce the
number of remote offce servers, storage and backup hardware, software, and other
related costs. In addition, centralized management signifcantly reduces the need for
remote site IT personnel, expensive site visits, and the need to ensure proper backups

of branch offce storage. Utilized in this manner, Tapestry WAFS supports lights-out
operation at multiple remote locations.
To provide the same enterprise-class services used in data centers, Tapestry WAFS fea-
tures a full suite of stackable IT services. These low-cost, centrally managed services
increase productivity and help maximize Return On Investment (ROI). Key services
include centralized fle management, e-mail attachment consolidation, Web caching,
print serving, and Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Confguration
Protocol (DHCP) services.
To deliver LAN-like performance for Common Internet File System (CIFS) and
Network File System (NFS) applications over the WAN, Tapestry WAFS incorporates
innovative technologies such as data streaming, compression, and fle-aware differ-
encing. In fact, Tapestry WAFS accelerates data transfer by as much as 100 times over
alternative offerings while reducing the amount of data sent over the WAN. As a result,
organizations can easily share data between remote sites, often saving hours per week
that were previously spent on time-consuming fle management and replication tasks.
Reducing complexity with Tapestry WAfs
Tapestry WAFS simplifes complexity by seamlessly integrating between existing data
center servers and remote offce clients according to common network integration
semantics. This approach reduces the learning curve for administrators and keeps IT
infrastructure changes to a minimum. It also enables standardization across the whole
enterprise, which in turn facilitates more consistent data management policies.
In addition, consolidation and centralization reduce the number of data copies to manage,
as well as the number of software tools and physical equipment for branch offces.
Moreover, all Network Attached Storage (NAS) semantics enforced by fle servers in
the data center are seamlessly extended to each branch offcereducing management
effort while ultimately increasing both control and consistency throughout the enterprise.
Improving compliance with Tapestry WAfs
To provide enterprise-class security and resiliency for compliance activities, Tapestry
WAFS integrates the latest security standards and leading authentication technologies.
It also integrates natively with advanced security schemes, such as SMB signing for
end-to-end security and the Microsoft Kerberos authentication standard. In addition,
organizations can encrypt all traffc sent over the WAN for added security.
The resilient Tapestry WAFS design helps protect data across a variety of applications
and network conditionsand enables it to survive inevitable WAN disruptions with
100 percent data coherency and consistency. Guaranteed fle consistency helps ensure
that all fles accessed are the most up-to-date versions and that fle changes will not be
lost or overwritten.
In this way, Tapestry WAFS helps reduce the business risks that many organizations face
with their branch offce environments. Because data is maintained in a central location,
organizations can implement consistent data backup and ILM policies for both the data
center and branch offces. They can also leverage best-practice regulatory compliance
and disaster recovery strategiesincreasing protection for mission-critical enterprise data.

To support more effcient ILM, many IT organizations have implemented tiered storage
systemsmigrating static and less frequently accessed data to slower and more perma-
nent storage media. Unfortunately, the different tiers of storage often have different
interfaces and functions that complicate data movement. Moreover, traditional data
migration tools are often expensive, diffcult to use, and limited in their ability to inter-
operate between different storage types and vendors.
As a more innovative alternative, Tapestry DMM is a simple but powerful tool that
supports affordable, high-performance data migration in heterogeneous storage envi-
ronments. Based on the intelligent Brocade SilkWorm

Fabric Application Platform,

Tapestry DMM provides a predictable and storage-centric migration solution. It addresses
both one-time project-oriented migration and ongoing operational migrations, in which
organizations move or copy data volumes on a monthly, weekly, or even daily basis.
As a result, Tapestry DMM is faster, more affordable, and easier to use than typical data
migration offerings.
lowering costs with Tapestry dmm
Compared to alternative offerings, Tapestry DMM is typically much less expensivein
terms of reduced capital and operating expense. It lowers operating expenses by reducing
planning cycle overhead, actual execution time, and application downtime. In addition,

Reducing complexity with Tapestry dmm
To simplify data migration, Tapestry DMM provides a single standardized tool for
cost-effective migration of data volumes independent of operating system, application,
or storage arrayunifying support for the broadest range of storage devices. Tapestry
DMM provides two management approaches: a robust command line interface that
can integrate with third-party tools and customized scripts, and a GUI-based manage-
ment console with a step-by-step interface that greatly simplifes migration tasks and
helps ensure consistent operations.
Tapestry DMM also reduces IT complexity by requiring much less planning and
hands-on execution time than alternative tools. As a SAN-based solution managed by
storage administrators, it is less disruptive than server-based solutions and easier to plan
for than traditional professional services offerings. Because it is designed for easy
wire-once setup, organizations can quickly deploy Tapestry DMM simply by connecting
it to an existing SAN. Prior to a migration project, organizations can insert Tapestry DMM
into the data path and then easily remove it after the project is complete.
Improving compliance with Tapestry dmm
To support ever-increasing compliance requirements, Tapestry DMM provides high
performance that helps address a wide range of business objectives, SLAs, and industry
regulations. For instance, terabyte-per-hour migrations move more data in less time.
The resulting shorter downtime windows help increase data availability for 24x7
global operations.
In addition, faster data migration over SANs and WANs can enhance disaster recovery
