Rev. Luke Roske-Metcalfe The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Acts 4:5-12, 1 John 3:16-24, John 10:11-18 April 29, 2012 4th Easter In the name of the Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer, Amen. Brothers and Sisters, I have good news! Jesus Christ is our Good Shepherd. This is the good news today, and I cant help but recognize the obvious: the gospel lesson for this morning is one of the passages from which our congregations name is derived. The founders of this congregation decided, way back when, that The Good Shepherd would be the name for this body of Christ. And the name of a congregation has powerit not only creates a sense of identity, but it also communicates an expectationa hope for what God might do through them in the future. In naming this congregation, Good Shepherd, the founders identified the congregations mission in the world at that time. I think they also hoped the congregation would faithfully follow the Good Shepherd for generations, and that it would extend the same care, attention, and love that we read about in the gospel lesson today to its members, and to the world around them. So what is it, then, that the name, Good Shepherd conjures up, so much so that generations of churches around the world have named themselves after this image of our Savior? By my reading of todays gospel lesson, there are at least five powerful reasons why a congregation might choose the Good Shepherd as the name of their church. I cant help but imagine that these five actions of Jesus were prayerfully in the minds of those who were involved in naming this congregation. In the passage, as we read about these five things, we get an image of who Jesus is for the worldfor usand how we understand Gods saving grace through him. We understand that our Savior is comforting and welcoming, present and active.

First, the Good Shepherd lays down his life for his sheep, and even does so of his own accord. Second, the Good Shepherd stays with, and cares for, his sheep. Third, the Good Shepherd knows his sheep, and in turn, they know their shepherd. Fourth, the Good Shepherd cares for the sheep both inside and outside the pen. And finally, the Good Shepherd has only one flock. Why would a church not want to be named after this image of our Savior? It conjures up everything we know about Gods love for us. It also directs us in how we might expect and hope to respond to that love. Its a confession of faith and a mission statement all in one. While I imagine that this church has lived into its names over the years, this congregation has grown up. It remembers its history, but its changed. Its developed and interpreted this passage in different ways at different points throughout history, yet remained faithful to its name. For this reason, instead of responding to the Good News this morning by reading a creed, I would like for us to read our mission statement together. I would like you to read with me, keeping the Gospel lesson in mind, so that we might not only remember our history, but also remind ourselves of how we hope to live out being The Church of the Good Shepherd in the world today. And as we do this, lets remember that all of thisall that we have done and all that we do todayeveryone whos been welcomed in this building and those we welcome todayeverything that we arecomes through the Good Shepherd, who knows us, and who laid down his life for us, so that we might freely live for others. Amen.

En el nombre del Creador, Rendentor, y sustentador, Amn. Hermanos y Hermanas, les tengo buenas nuevas! Jesucristo es nuestro Buen Pastor. Estas son las buenas nuevas para hoy y no puedo dejar de reconocer lo obvio: la leccin del Evangelio para esta maana es uno de los pasajes de los que deriva el nombre de nuestra congregacin. Los fundadores de esta congregacin decidieron hace muchos aos que El Buen Pastor, sera el nombre de este cuerpo de Cristo. Y el nombre de una congregacin tiene poder ya que no slo crea un sentido de identidad, sino que tambin comunica una esperanza de lo que Dios puede hacer a travs de ellos en el futuro. En el nombramiento de esta congregacin, "Buen Pastor", los fundadores identificaron la misin de la congregacin en el mundo en esa poca. Yo creo que tambin esperaban que la congregacin siguiera fielmente al Buen Pastor por generaciones, y que se extendiera el mismo cuidado, atencin y el amor que leemos en el evangelio de hoy a sus miembros y al mundo que los rodea. Entonces, qu significa el nombre del "Buen Pastor"? evoca, tanto que por generaciones las iglesias alrededor del mundo se han nombrado de esta manera, a partir de esta imagen de nuestro Salvador. En la lectura de la leccin del Evangelio de hoy, hay por lo menos cinco poderosas razones por las que una congregacin puede elegir el Buen Pastor, como el nombre de su iglesia. No puedo dejar de imaginar que estas cinco acciones de Jess estaban presentes en las oraciones y en las mentes de aquellos que estuvieron involucrados en el nombramiento de esta congregacin. En el pasaje, como se lee acerca de estas cinco cosas, se obtiene una imagen de quin es Jess para el mundo, para nosotros y cmo entendemos la gracia salvadora de Dios a travs de l. Entendemos que nuestro Salvador es reconfortante y acogedor, presente y activo. En primer lugar, el Buen Pastor da su vida por sus ovejas, e incluso lo hace por su propia voluntad. En segundo lugar, el Buen Pastor se queda con, y se preocupa por sus ovejas. En tercer lugar, el Buen Pastor conoce a sus ovejas y, a su vez las ovejas conocen a su pastor. En cuarto lugar, el Buen Pastor cuida de las ovejas dentro y fuera del redil. Y, por lo tanto, el Buen Pastor tiene un solo rebao. Cul es la razn por lo que una iglesia desea ser nombrada e identificada a partir de esta imagen de nuestro Salvador? Pues, porque contempla todo lo que sabemos sobre el amor de Dios para nosotros. Pero al mismo tiempo, tambin nos ensea la manera de responder a ese amor. Es una confesin de fe y una declaracin de misin, es todo en uno.

Esta iglesia a lo largo de los aos recuerda su historia, sus orgenes, pero al mismo tiempo se ha ido transformando, ha presentado cambios, ha crecido. Y a desarrollado e interpretado este pasaje de diferentes maneras, en diferentes puntos de su historia, sin embargo, se mantuvo fiel a su nombre. Por esta razn, en lugar de responder a las Buenas Nuevas de esta maana con la lectura del Credo, me gustara que se lea, nuestra declaracin de misin como iglesia juntos. Me gustara que ustedes lean conmigo, manteniendo en su mente la leccin del Evangelio de modo que no slo nos recuerde nuestra historia, sino que tambin nos recuerde la forma vivir la esperanza para ser La Iglesia del Buen Pastor en el mundo de hoy. Y al hacer esto, recordemos que todo esto ... todo lo que hemos hecho y todo lo que hacemos hoy en da ... todos los que han sido bien recibidos en este edificio y los que damos la bienvenida a da de hoy ... todo lo que somos ... viene a travs del Buen Pastor, que nos conoce, y que dio su vida por nosotros, para que libremente podamos vivir para los dems.
