County will be looking at. In an era of

economic Slowdown county residents

With the past election many sitting county board members were shown the door by the voters ushering in a new era here in county government. The pledge by the newly nominated candidates and current county board members is message received. With funding issues across the board the Kendall County Board is making steps to clarify how board members are to be compensated for their service to the County. At issue is the per diem program in which under the current system mileage and 85.00 payments is paid to each county board member. In the past few Months County Fianc chairman Anne Vickery has offered suggestions as a way to begin to clarify the current system. Some suggestions under consideration Paying mileage to the county board members begin from the county building and ending at their destination. Raising the per Diem of the meeting to 90 a day Having county Board members pay for their own Health Care Working with Department Heads and Treasures office to streamline process! Richard Lee Sung, one of the more notable actors of the hit TV show M*A*S*H* recently stated that Americans are probably more familiar with the work he and his fellow actors did on the Korean War-based TV show M*A*S*H than with the sacrifices he and his fellow U.S. servicemen made fighting the war itself. And that must change. I could not agree more. Even more disturbing than that, is the other handful of countries that the U.S. has had armed conflict in that most people have forgotten about. Countries such as; Vietnam, Korea, Cuba, Cambodia, El Salvidor, Libya, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Iraqi/Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Bosnia, and the current Iraq, and Afghanistan, have all had conflict and many losses of life. Its sad and disturbing to know that half of the U.S. doesnt even know or care that our military has fought and died in so many countries around the world. This memorial day I am asking you all to take time and explain to your children that Memorial day is not just a day off of school, not a day off of work, not just a day to grill out and party but a day of remembrance, a day of thanks to the men and women who have fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice for this country so that

not for profit company is making a world of difference for many surviving family members that have lost someone in the US Armed forces. This memorial day TAPS is inviting over 474 children of deceased service members to Camp Good Greif and Honoring Hero Camp in Washington, DC for their 18th annual TAPS National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp for Young Survivors. There the children will be paired with any number of volunteers that have taken time out of their life, and money out of their pocket to give back a small token of gratitude and help the healing process that one goes through after such a loss. Mentors will be providing a safe and supportive atmosphere to conduct activities and opportunities to learn coping skills, establish and identify support systems and create awareness that they are not alone in the grief of their loved one. They will then be accompanying them around our national mall showing them that the US honors their deceased loved ones and will be ending the day with dinner and party at the local DC National Guard Armory. Now while I do realize that this is a little dated as Memorial Day is just around the corner I encourage you all to head over to the TAPS website (http://www.taps.org/) and view the great work they are doing to support our fallen heroes. Also Please be sure to keep this in mind for next memorial day 2013 and volunteer

buyer Part 2 Roofing

This Old Home Inspection for the

Starting at the top the roof is one of the most critical areas of the home, If your roof is in poor shape It will

not shed water as Intended, resulting in leaks from the roof to the foundation. The critical areas of the roof should be thoroughly Inspected, If the roof is too high for easy access, then use binoculars. Starting with the south side analyze the condition of the roofing surface first look at the ridge for any sagging of the roof structure, then move on to the roof penetrations like roof vents and the plumbing stack, next you want to look at the flashings any valleys and walls that meet the roofline and the chimney should have extensive step flashing and if chimney is located were water will run down the roof towards it there needs to be a cricket at the back, this is a small pitch that helps divert water around the chimney and since you are looking this is a good time to Inspect It as well, look at where it meets the house is it pulling away ? are there cracked bricks and missing mortar, dont forget to Inspect the Crown (top) of the chimney for cracks or damage also is there a cap this will keep animals out and help keep water from running down the flue . Next take note of what type of roofing material is on the home most homes in the area have asphalt shingles but there are many other kinds like wood shingles slate and metal, each of these has different life span and indicators of what kind of condition there in. Asphalt shingles typically last 20 to 30 years and the condition is easy to see look for cupping/curled or torn shingles and missing gravel coating. Wood shingles have an estimated life span of 30 to 40 years, look for loose missing or damaged shingles and replace when necessary. Metal roofs have a life span of 50 years and are easy to see the difference between an old rusty cracked and pitted roof and a nice newer roof. Slate has a life span of 50 to 100 years depending on the grade deterioration is more subtle, flaking and white stains are to signs the roof is getting on in years. Next weeks column we will

The Sad State of our State

by Roger Sheeman

With the enormous amount of debt the state has Democrats who are hardly willing to cut any state programs enough to cut the deficit are now back to raising the so called sin taxes. They are out of ideas, after raising the state income tax. They are now proposing another $1 a pack tax increase on cigarettes. Its a fact more minorities smoke more than Caucasians which would severely hurt those low income earners. This is not a tax on the rich its a tax on the poor.

they would pay a tax on top of a cover charge in the area of $3 to $5. This tax will bring in an estimated $1 million dollars not to reduce the deficit, but to fund rape crisis centers. The Democrats have also proposed allowing igaming, (gambling on line) in the state which they say could generate hundreds of millions of dollars. How could they prevent someone underage gambling on line? igaming could run the casinos out of business and lose thousands of jobs. The State House passed a massive gambling bill on Wednesday that adds 5 new casinos, including one for Chicago and allows for slot machines at the race tracks. Lose your money twice as fast. The legislature did pass a bill requiring some of the 78,000 current retired state employees who pay nothing for their health plan to pay some based on their length of service and their ability to pay. What these limits are is unclear at this time. The Democrats in the State Senate have proposed a budget that $600 million more than the House budget. The Democrat plan spends more than the projected revenue of $33.7 billion. Governor Quinn has proposed taking about $250 million dollars from the IDOT road fun to pay for IDOTs health-care, workers compensation, building rent and maintenance costs. This will leave the state with about 5,000 miles of roads by 2018 that are deemed unacceptable. You thought the roads were bad now just wait. With the states current unemployment at 8.9% a Senate committee approved a bill to raise the minimum wage to more than $10 an hour. How much will Happy Meals be if this is put into law? This will negatively affect teen age employment which has sky rocketed during the current economic turndown. We have chased so much business out of the state so it looks like fast food places are next on the list. So long Golden Arches, The King and Wendy. There also is a plan to implement Obamacare 2 years earlier which

could add 800,000 more people to Medicaid. They believe the state would receive a bigger chunk of funds to help pay for Medicaid. Just what we need Obamacare sooner than later. Lets hope the Supreme Court takes care of that sometime this coming month. How sad is it that the very things that have chased jobs from Illinois, high taxes and high labor costs are exactly what the Democrats are proposing more of. How sad is our state. Sad very sad.

change from happening. Specifically, those who control and lead the Republican Party (who pledged from the day of his inauguration to make him a one term President), the Tea Party, and voters who support these people yet have suffered under their policies, have united against the President from day one. However, the more the right people speak out for truth, the better the nation will be, and President will get the respect he deserves. He definitely deserves a second term to complete that which he has started. For those of you who know the evolution of these days, I submit the following quotes: #1 "In Germany, they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak

up because I wasn't Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionists. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up." Martin Niemoeller #2 "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), (attributed)

Not everyone in the media (even the good guys) can adequately inform the general public correctly about political behavior in the United States. If you have noticed most of our commentators and their analysts are not political scientists or students of government, and many are not journalists at all. Therefore, much that is in the media are of those who speak in generalities according to their own prejudices and discrimination. Ask, if possible, those who say that it is obvious President Barack Obama cannot run for re-election on his record whether or not they have any type of college degree, post graduate degree, or equivalent to that of Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. In other words, where and how do the critics research the evidence to make any comments at all. Surely, the critics must know that President Barack Obama must have done something great for the entire World in order to have received the Nobel Peace Prize The President's critics must know that Ivy Universities in the United States specialize in qualifying leaders to lead these United States (from the Nation's Capitol to the smallest Precinct). For the record, President Obama ran on the Politics of Change and what is obvious (if anything is obvious) is that there are some of those among the statusquo who are determined to prevent

What does it take to make a person feel really great? First, you need to be free from pain. Second, you need to be able to handle stress. Third, you need to be free of chronic illness. And fourth, you need to have energy and sleep well. You cannot have a good quality of life if you are constantly troubled with aches and pains. You cant go out and do the things you like to do, even if its just going shopping, if your pain holds you back. Acupuncture is famous for helping alleviate pain, and in some studies it was better than pain medication. It doesnt have the dangerous side effects, such as liver damage, that can happen with medication. You need to be able to handle the stresses of daily life with a sense of calmness and strength. If you are filled with anxiety or depression your life will be like hell, not like heaven. Acupuncture increases endorphins in your body, neurotransmitters that help to reduce pain and increase your sense of well-being. Chinese herbs also help to calm the spirit, to calm your worries and lift your spirits.

Job Hunting Tips

Tips from Linked in

1. Make time Its easy to let job hunting fall to the bottom of your to-do list, but you cant afford to let that happen. Schedule at least 15 minutes a day in your calendar to work on your resume, update and check online networking profiles and search job listings. Opportunities come and go quickly, so you need to be in the game on a daily basis. 2. Get noticed What better way to impress a recruiter than to have a professional networking profile appear as the first search result for your name? Completing your LinkedIn profile to 100% with your education, experience, recommendations and group memberships will increase your search ranking and give employers a strong impression before you ever meet in person. 3. Be Make sure keyword savvy your profile is

chock-full of keywords that will attract a recruiters attention. Look through job postings and LinkedIn profiles that appeal to you and incorporate some of the same words or phrases. In addition to joband industryspecific words, recruiters also love leadership terms (captain, president) and action words (managed, designed). 4. Reach out Connect on LinkedIn with everyone you know -- friends, family, neighbors, professors, family friends, internship colleagues and others. Once youre connected, send each person a friendly message on LinkedIn, asking if they would keep an eye out for the particular kind of job or jobs youre seeking or if they can introduce you to other helpful contacts. 5. Spread the word To build your credibility and stay on peoples radar screens during your job hunt, regularly update your status on LinkedIn and other social networks. You might share links to articles you think would be relevant to people in your field (to show you are up on the news), announcements about events youre attending (to show that

you are actively networking) and good career news (to show that youre headed for success). Just remember to keep your updates clean and appropriate. 6. Get into groups Beyond connecting to individuals, join LinkedIn groups related to your alma mater, professional associations, volunteer organizations and industries you want to join. Every discussion in which you comment is an opportunity to market yourself to people who might be hiring, and every group contains a Jobs tab where members post opportunities to one another. 7. Search high and low What makes LinkedIns job postings different from others is that they dont just tell you who is hiring, they tell you how you are personally connected to that company through your network. Even when you see a job listed on another site, LinkedIn can help you research people at that company and tell you how you are personally connected through your network. No matter where you look for jobs, cast a wider net by altering your search terms and location criteria from time to time. 8. Follow companies When you see a job you like on another job board, use LinkedIn as a company research tool. Check out the LinkedIn Company Page of any organization where youd like to work and click Follow company. Activities of that organization on LinkedIn (job postings, hires, announcements) will appear on your homepage and alert you to potential opportunities. 9. Persist (without pestering) While you dont want to be a pest, persistence is a very important component of the job search process. Sending followup messages through LinkedIn can help you stand out from other candidates. Every time

you send someone a message through LinkedIn, the recruiter or hiring manager can easily click over to your profile and check out your credentials 10. Consider Job Seeker Premium Once you have a strong LinkedIn profile, you want to make sure it gets to the top of recruiters inboxes when you apply for jobs. LinkedIn offers an upgrade feature called Job Seeker Premium that, among other benefits, places your profile at the top of the list of applicants to the jobs you apply for on LinkedIn. Premium subscribers are twice as likely to be contacted by recruiters and 80% more likely to be found in search. Check it out at http://www.linkedin.com/jobseeker.

Our goal is to ensure that the topics are informative and beneficial to the business community. It also provides a great networking opportunity. Over the next year, the BCEC will be discussing the Orchard Road opportunities, if this is something of interest to you. Please email or call the MEDC office and let us know if other topics may be of interest to you so we can start planning our next breakfast event please call 630-897-6748
