2012 marks the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens, one of the greatest storytellers of all time. Many of his novels have been adapted for the stage and there have been at least 180 film and TV adapatations of his work. Facts about Charles Dickens: 1. He was born in Portsmouth in 1812. 2. When he was 12 years old, his father went to prison for not paying his debts. Charles had to work in a factory to help his family survive. This experience probably influenced all his later work.

3. Charles Dickens revived Christmas traditions in the UK and the USA. Christmas traditions almost disappeared in the UK, but Dickens helped to revive customs like the family Christmas dinner, giving presents, sending Christmas cards and decorating the Christmas tree. His novel A Christmas Carol had the most profound effect on Victorian society.
