Problem Statement:
We have been asked by a customer of Alpha Engineering Company, Roadrunner Trucking to build a can crusher. The can crusher has to reduce the volume of the aluminum cans they dispose of by 70%. Otherwise they will be penalized by $0.05 per can over volume.

Background/ Justification:
The can crusher is an easy way to reduce the amount of aluminum cans in a house or business while also making it easier to recycle larger quantities in smaller spaces. When the cans are flattened it makes it easier to store and transport them. It takes a total of 60 days for a can to go through the recycling process and be filled and ready for sale again. The can crusher makes it easier to contribute to the recycling process.

Customer:
Our customers will be the Roadrunner Trucking Company and our Integrated Technology teacher Mr. Pritchard.

Scope:
Our project requires us to design and build a can crusher that needs to reduce the volume of aluminum cans at the Roadrunner Trucking Company by 70%. The Can Crusher one mechanism composed of a can bin, wood, metal brackets, metal hinges, screws and nails. All of the work that is done in relationship to the project will be documented in the technical report. A PowerPoint presentation will also be prepared for the class and presented to summarize the technical report. All of our work will be submitted to our instructor. In order to construct the can crusher we will utilize the internet and library to complete our research. Subject matter expertise will be provided by the following individuals: Construction/ Technical Mr. Pritchard CAD Mr. Hund Calculations/ Math Ms. Hernacki

Materials and tools that we will use to complete our project are

Following are four specific customers constrains that we will need to pay close attention to, if we want to construct the can crusher properly: The max space it can occupy is 18 x 24 x 30. We must use a minimum of one simple machine. The aluminum can bin must be sized to hold 20 cans. Aluminum cans volume must be reduced by 70%. We have accounted for any scheduling issues that will prevent the group from working before and/or after school and have found ways to work around them. This will ensure that we will finish our project on the date that has been set by our customer.

Deliverables:
Our Deliverables will include the can crusher, the tech report, and the power point. The can crusher will be built to the specifications and constraints given to us by the customer. We will compile the data from the can crusher and it will be given to our customer, Mr. Pritchard. The technical report will include all 12 steps of the 12 step PLTW design process, the scope and all required information to help the customer better understand the our product. CAD drawings with the dimensions, isometric and orthographic views will also be included. The PowerPoint will include a summary of our technical report and outline all of the main ideas.

Brainstorm:
What we already know: -We have to create a can crusher that reduces the aluminum cans volume by 70%. -The can crusher must be one mechanism. -We have to use the PLTW 12- Step Design Process to design and develop a solution. - A can crusher is used to crush an aluminum can to help the environment and save space in our garbage can. What we want to know: How is some can crusher designs made to make it self-loading? How do we reduce friction?

How do we get the crushed cans to spread out across the bin? Who invented the first can crusher? Where was the can crusher invented? What was the reason the can crusher was develop? How did the early can crushers work? How has the can crusher evolve? What are some different kinds of can crushers? How much force does it take to crush a can? Where should the fulcrum point be located on the lever? What is the average width of the human palm?

Research and Generate Ideas:

After doing a long research on the can crusher, we found important and interesting facts. This research helped us extend our background on what a can crusher is, and its history. Below is some important information we found while researching. The information is in respective order as the questions above (Brainstorm).

Friction is reduced by adding some kind of lubricant, change the shape, or adding a different material for example plastic is a low surface friction. The bin can be possibly long vertically or may have an incline plane to distribute. Jesse M. Wright invented the first can crusher.

The can crusher was first invented in The can crusher was developed to reduce the amount of space occupied, and to help the environment. The early can crushers
