Overview of India

India is the seventh largest country in the world covering an area of 3.28 million square kilometres that in turn covers 2,4% of the worlds land area. India tapers southward resulting in the division of the Indian Ocean into two bodies of water, the Bay of Bengal in the east and the Arabian Sea in the west. India shares its land borders with Pakistan in the west, Nepal, Bhutan and China in the northwest and Burma and Bangladesh in the east. Sri Lanka lies to the south of India, just off the coast of Tamil Nadu province.

India has the 4th most water area in the world, behind Russia, Canada and the USA. Needless to say that India has a large reserve of big and small rivers. The River Brahmaputra, originating in Tibet, is the longest river in India.

Climate: India is a large tropical country and is famous for its diverse climatic features. Rainfall can be lower than 500mm in northern part of Kashmir to over 2000mm in the sub-Himalayan range territories in

the north east. The average temperatures vary from 10C in winter in the northwest parts of the country and 20C in the southern parts of India to between 32 and 40C over all of India. The monsoon season, known as the rainy season, lasts between June and September. Generally speaking southern India has more rainfall than the north. Economy: India has the 9th largest economy of the world and by 2035 it is predicted to be the 3rd largest economy behind the USA and China. Indias growth rate is said to be around 9% a year. The unemployment rate in India is about 10% and 36% of the population lives below Poverty Line. 70% of the population lives in rural villages. Demographics: The population of India is around 1,2 billion people with an annual growth rate of 1,4%. India has more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 years and more than 65% is below the age of 35 years of age. The population density per kilometre square ranges from 9340 in Delhi to 17 in Arunachal Pradesh. India contains the majority of the worlds Zoroastrians, Sikhs, Hindus, Jains and Bahais and is also home to the third largest Muslim population after Indonesia and Pakistan. Christians have the largest majority in the Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya states.
