Welcome to Progress Actional

The Actional family of products provides operational and business visibility, root cause analysis, policy-based security and control of services in a heterogeneous environment. With it you gain the quality, visibility and control needed for business transaction assurance from development through application support. This is achieved with: Comprehensive validation tools driving quality early in the development lifecycle Automatic end-to-end visibility to detect issues proactively and repair problems quickly and effectively Business insight on executing transaction and tools to dynamically manage service behavior to optimize business outcomes

Actional Application Developments robust features include load testing, flow mapping, root-cause analysis and design-time policy validation. This truly collaborative platform enables architects, developers, testers, business analysts to work together to drive quality, trust, and confidence throughout the service lifecyclefrom development to application support, and beyond. To deliver lower IT costs, greater revenues, and business agility, service-based applications must execute business transactions successfully. Pre-production is the best time to identify and address reliability, integration, performance, and scalability issuesbefore they are "baked into" the software and released into the runtime environment. Actional Application Development offers the tools your pre-production teams need to resolve quality and performance issues quickly. This is achieved with: A collaborative platform for sharing quality-related assets, test results and policy enforcement rules Fast and easy testing of performance, regression, and compliance without a deep knowledge of XML Load testing early and often during development to ensure performance and scalability later in production

New Features
Version 8.2.1: No new features. Version 8.2: Multi-value Conditions: Multi-value Conditions provide the ability to define conditions based on a combination of message field values as well as a combination of values derived from individual message fields. This ability to derive complex conditions provides a finer control in the evaluation of policies. Server Side Policies: Server Side Policies provide the ability to detect and alert when there has been a period of inactivity for a given location over a specified period of time. This allows for the configuration of the time interval verification as well as the ability to initiate warnings and alerts. Publishing of Non-SOAP Services: Non-SOAP services can now be published to CentraSite ActiveSOA 8.2. Separate Database Configuration for Provisioning: The ability to configure separate database connections for Actional Management Server and Actional Agents allows for an increased number of database connections used by the server without affecting the Actional Agents.

Installation and Compatibility

Installation instructions are covered in detail in the Progress Actional Team Server Installation Guide. NOTE: If upgrading, the following steps are required: Ask all users to save their work and log out of Actional Team Server, and then stop the Actional Team Server service. Do not uninstall your previous version of Actional Team Server. Run the installer for the new version. If the installer detects a previous installation, do one of the following: If you do not want to upgrade, click Continue with new install. If you want to upgrade your existing installation, click Upgrade. The installer uses your existing installation directory, database, port, and license key.

During the installation, if you are prompted that a newer file already exists and asked if you wish to overwrite the file, click Yes to All.

Upgrading from Mindreef SOAPscope Server 6.x

Before you begin: You will need your Mindreef SOAPscope Server license key or a new license key for Actional Team Server. Your Mindreef SOAPscope Server license key is displayed in Mindreef SOAPscope Server under Server Settings / License. Your existing Mindreef SOAPscope Server license key works for Actional Team Server as long as your subscription or maintenance is active. However, licensing for Actional Team Server is based on named users rather than floating licenses for concurrent users. Call 1-800-4Progress to request a free upgrade that increases the number of users on your license to accommodate the new licensing model. If you wish to upgrade your Mindreef SOAPscope Server database to the latest Actional release, your current Mindreef SOAPscope Server version must be 6.1.0.4 or above (6.2 recommended). Please contact Technical Support if you need access to Mindreef SOAPscope Server 6.2.

Welcome to Progress Actional | 7

You will need the connection properties for your Mindreef SOAPscope Server database if you wish to migrate your data to Actional Team Server. Your connection properties are in the following file in your Mindreef SOAPscope Server installation: [installdir]\tomcat\webapps\sos\WEB-INF\db.properties Make a backup of your existing database. After data conversion, it can't be used by older product versions.

During installation: To upgrade a database other than Derby: When the database setup page appears, choose Connect to an existing Actional Team Server database. Make sure you have backed up your old database, enter the connection properties for that database, and proceed. To upgrade a Derby database: 1. Pick Automatically create a new database, and select Apache Derby. Keep the default name. We'll be discarding this database later. After the log-in page appears, log out, close your browser and stop the Actional Team Server service. 2. Copy the db.properties file from [Mindreef SOAPscope Server 6.x install directory]\tomcat\webapps\sos\WEB-INF\db.properties to C:\Program Files\Actional\TeamServer8\tomcat\webapps\sos\WEBINF\db.properties 3. Copy the Derby database folder and all sub-folders from C:\Program Files\Mindreef\Mindreef-Common\data\[databasename] (default name is usually Mindreef) to C:\Program Files\Actional\Actional-Common\data\[databasename] 4. Start the Actional Team Server service, and launch the Web application. The Database Upgrade page appears. Press Upgrade Database to proceed.

Technical Notes and FAQs

Q: How do I upgrade from Mindreef SOAPscope Server 5.x or Coral 5.x? A: Upgrading from a version 5.x product to Actional Team Server requires first upgrading to Mindreef SOAPscope Server 6.2. Please email Technical Support to obtain a copy of Mindreef SOAPscope Server 6.2. Q: What are the limitations of Derby? A: Derby's performance can be slower than that of external databases. If you require optimum database access time, consider using an external database such as Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, or Oracle. Derby databases created with a version of the product prior to 8.1 have a maximum record size limit of 1MB. This limit was removed for databases created in the current release, and we hope to remove the limit for databases created with previous versions in the future. Q: How do I migrate my data from Mindreef SOAPscope Tester to Actional Team Server? A: Make a backup copy of your Mindreef SOAPscope Tester database. After you convert to Actional Team Server, the database can't be used in Mindreef SOAPscope Tester. Then stop Mindreef SOAPscope Tester. Launch Actional Team Server. Go to Server Settings / Database. Pick Connect to Existing database, and point to your Mindreef SOAPscope Tester Database. Q: My network map doesn't appear, but I don't see any errors in the logs. What is wrong? A: The map won't appear if you are using a popup blocker. Change your popup blocker to allow popups from the machine running Actional Team Server or Actional Management Server. Q: How do I get more debug info if Load Check or network maps appear to hang? A: For Actional Team Server, right click the service manager icon in the Windows System tray and select Thread Dump. Right click again and stop the service. The thread dump is saved to [installdir]\tomcat\logs\jakarta_service_yyyymmdd.log where yyyymmdd is the current date. If you are having trouble with a network map, also capture actional.zip. This file is available from Actional Management Server.
