Doctrine
Doctrine refers to what God want us to do. 1Ti 1:3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, 1Ti 1:10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; 1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 1Ti 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. 1Ti 6:1 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. 2 And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort. 3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; Three ways false doctrines contrary to Gods Word are produced: 1) They twist verses according to their own doctrine. 2) They put out bibles with false doctrines in it. (See Jehovahs Witness Bible in John 1:18) 3) They dont rightly divide the word of God. Books on Bible doctrines:

DOCTRINE OF GOD Lesson 1 THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD There is a definite knowledge of God among all men. It may be limited. It may be clouded. It may be perverted. But a certain knowledge of God exists in the hearts of all men. In other words, there are no true atheists. Ps 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The fool has an argument in his heart. God has put a knowledge of His existence in the fools heart. The fool argues against that by saying IN HIS HEART, there is no God. The fool lives as though there is no God. He laughs at those who do profess faith in God. He curses those who attempt to please God. But all the while, the fool is knowledgeable of Gods work and existence. There is a GENERAL REVELATION of God toward every man and in every man. A. THE GENERAL REVELATION OF GOD. The general revelation of God is accomplished in three areas.

1. CHRONOLOGICAL: This simply means, timewise. Every man knows God by

TIME. Ro 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. The Bible says that the invisible things of him are clearly seen from the creation. From the very beginning of TIME, God has given to every man a knowledge of His eternal power and Godhead. Look at the history of this world and the men on it. Look at the sun, the moon, and the stars. Look at the seasons. Any farmer who has dropped a seed into the cold ground, and then watched as the ground gave way to a green plant with fruit to feed the farmers body, has a testimony to the eternal power of God. TIME itself is composed of THREE. In time, there is past, present and future. Without any one of the three, time would not exist. Time must have past, present and future. Time is a general revelation of the Godhead. Notice in Romans 1:20 that the invisible things are clearly seen, being understood and that this revelation has been from the creation. God is One just as time is one. But God manifests Himself in Three, just as time manifests itself in three. The Father is God (Ephesians 6:23). The Son is God (Titus 2:10-14). The Holy Spirit is God (Acts 5:3-4). There is One God Who manifests Himself to man in Three

OPEN BIBLE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

Divine Persons. This is referred to in the Bible as the Godhead (Romans 1:20; Colossians 2:9). God, by the process and continuance of time itself, has given and does give to all men everywhere certain knowledge of Himself. INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT Answer these questions on a separate sheet and write the memory work from memory. 1. What does chronological mean? 2. Are there any true atheists? 3. The general revelation means a revelation to _______________ men. 4. The man who says there is no God is a ________________ according to the Bible. 5. God manifests (shows) Himself to man in three ___________ ___________. 6. From the creation, every man clearly sees Gods ___________ ___________ and ___________________. 7. Memorize Psalm 14:1 and Romans 1:18-21 so that you are able to write them from memory. Lesson 2

2. CONSCIENCE: This means that every man has a sense of obligation to some
set standard. Ro 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) The Word of God states that the Gentiles (nations other than the nation of Israel), which have not the law of Moses have a law within them. God never gave the law of Moses to the Gentiles. But, god put in the Gentiles hearts another law. This moral law accuses or excuses. It is true that this is clouded, prejudiced, and many times in error. Nevertheless, it is a standard which witnesses in their conscience. The fact that every man has a conscience is proof that man was created by God who is the Lawgiver. A man who has never heard of the Bible accuses himself or excuses himself in all of his actions. This process is a testimony to the existence of God who could give such faculty to a man. Remember this: all men accuse or excuse what they do. An unsaved man does it by his own thoughts being the standard. A saved man does it by the Bible being the standard. In Romans 2:15, the Bible says their thoughts the mean. This simply means that the thoughts of the unsaved man is the standard. Mean is defined as standard or authority.

3. CREATION: This means that every person has a general revelation of God by
observation of the creation. Ro 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

OPEN BIBLE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. 18 But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world. According to this passage, salvation comes to those who call upon the name of the Lord. Several questions are asked: a. b. c. d. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? How shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? How shall they hear without a preacher? How shall they preach, except they be sent?

Notice that the inspired writer begins with (1) the calling sinner; (2) the hearing of faith; (3) the preacher; (4) the calling of God to the preacher. The section is concluded by saying that faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17). How can a man get saved? Answer: By faith. How does a man get faith? Answer: By hearing the Word of God. Without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6) and without the Word of God there can be no faith (Romans 10:17). In Romans 10:18, the Bible says all the earth has heard a universal testimony. Paul, by inspiration, quotes from Psalm 19 in Romans 10:18. Ps 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. 4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun, Although all men of all time have heard day unto day and night unto night the testimony of Gods creation, all men are not saved. The only men who get saved are those who call on God by faith after hearing the Word of God, the Bible. Gods general revelation of Himself in TIME, in the CONSCIENCE of man, and in the CREATION is ample proof of God and makes every man without excuse. Ro 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT Answer these questions on a separate sheet and write the memory work from memory. 1. Gods general revelation of Himself is found in three areas. Name them: 1. ________________ 2. _______________ 3. _______________ 2. Conscience means ________________________. 3. Every man either _______________ or ______________ his actions. 4. The ________________ did not have the law of Moses given to them. 5. An unsaved mans standard is his own _________________. 6. A saved mans standard is the _________________. 7. A man is saved by ______________. This comes by hearing the __________ ___ ___________. 8. How many have heard the message of creation? 9. Have all people heard the Bible? 10. Memorize Psalm 19:1-4; Romans 2:14-15; and Romans 10:13-18 so that you can write them from memory. Lesson 3 B. THE SPECIAL REVELATION OF GOD. The special revelation of God is the Bible. The general revelation of God is the creation. Although the general revelation (creation) is enough revelation to make all men responsible to God, it is not enough to save men. In this time we live there is no salvation except in the Lord Jesus Christ. In times past, men were saved without knowing about Jesus Christ. Ac 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. Notice the Bible says, THE TIMES OF THIS IGNORANCE GOD WINKED AT; BUT NOW There is a difference in what God accepts NOW (after the resurrection) and what God accepted BEFORE the Lord Jesus Christ died, was buried, and rose again. Ac 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. God accepted man in the Old Testament by the blood of bulls and goats. It was temporary but nevertheless God accepted them. Ge 4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

OPEN BIBLE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

After the Lord Jesus Christ died upon the cross, was buried and rose again, no one is accepted by God without them first accepting Jesus Christ. 1. The Bible is called the Word of God. The Bible is Gods written Word to man. Man cannot be saved without the Word of God. 1Pe 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. Notice that the creation is not the same as the Word of God. Grass withers and flowers fall away but Gods Word endures forever. The creation withers, but Gods Word remains. Mt 24:35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. It is very clear that the creation (heaven and earth) will pass away but the Word of God will remain. Does this mean that A BOOK will remain after the heaven and earth pass away? Exactly! Re 20:11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 2. The Bible is Gods special revelation for all faith and practice. God has given written instructions so that no mistake can be made about knowing His will. The Bible is absolutely infallible with no mistake or error. 2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works. The Lord Jesus Christ is called the Word of God (John 1:1; Revelation 19:13). The only way to know about Jesus is by the Bible. INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT Answer these questions on a separate sheet and write the memory work from memory. 1. What is the general revelation? 2. What is the special revelation? 3. The only name given under heaven among men whereby we must be saved is _______________. 4. The only way to know the Lord Jesus Christ is to know the ____________. 5. The creation will _____________ ________________, but Gods Word will not _____________ _____________.

6. Memorize I Peter 1:23-25 and II Timothy 3:16-17 so that you are able to write them from memory. Lesson 4 THE EXISTENCE OF GOD The Bible does not argue the existence of God. The Bible assumes the existence of God. In the beginning, God (Genesis 1:1). The purpose of the Bible is not to convince men that there is a God by certain arguments. The Bible reveals God. It is not a Book to reveal things about God. It is the revelation of God. When we look at the proofs of the existence of God from the creation, we see several arguments or proofs of Gods existence. These are not proofs from the Bible. They are proofs from nature. A. THE INTUITION PROOF. The intuition proof of Gods existence is that all men of all ages are religious to some degree. This is a fact that is proven by observation. Ritualism is found from the cathedral to the jungle drums. Any exception to the rule simply reinforces the rule. The man who takes Gods Name in vain while he claims that there is no God is proof that he intuitively is a religious man. It is an undeniable part of his nature. Man is incurably religious. Since man is religious by his very nature, this is a proof that God exists. B. THE COSMOLOGICAL PROOF. This word comes from a Greek word, Kosmos, which means world. This is an argument based on the existence of the world. The world is here but how did it come into existence? The world could not start itself. The world and universe are running down. Instead of building itself up, the universe is breaking down. That fact means it had a beginning and that it did not create itself since it is breaking down. The only answer to this is that the universe was created by God. A simple illustration of this truth is seen by a ball rolling along the floor. The ball did not begin to roll by itself. The ball cannot continue to roll by itself. Something or someone CAUSED THE EFFECT of the rolling ball. The universe is the effect of what God caused. C. THE TELEOLOGICAL PROOF. This proof has to do with design. The things in the creation have a purpose. Things work together. Planets are in orbit. A slight change in distance between the earth and sun would result in the earth freezing or burning up, yet the distance remains so that the earth is livable. If someone who had never seen a house were to walk in the front door and see the layout of the rooms, the windows, closets, electrical switches, water faucets, heating system, he would assume that someone had designed and built the house. He would not think that it had just happened by trees falling in the forest. Heb 3:4 For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. It is also error to say that the creation just happened to fall together. INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT

OPEN BIBLE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

Answer each question and write the memory verse from memory. 1. 2. 3. 4. The Bible does not try to prove the __________________ of God. The Bible reveals ____________, not things about ____________. The _________________ proof of Gods existence has to do with man being religious. The ________________ proof of Gods existence has to do with cause and effect.

5. The universe is: (a) running down (b) building itself up. 6. The _________________ proof of Gods existence has to do with design. 7. Memorize Hebrews 3:4 so that you can write it from memory. Lesson 5 D. THE ANTHROPOLOGICAL PROOF. The word, anthropos, is a Greek word meaning man. Anthropological has to do with the composition of man and the study of those elements of his being. 1. Man is a three in one. 1Th 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Man is spirit. Man is soul. Man is body. He is one being but he is three parts. The three parts make up the one being. God said in Genesis 1:26, Let us make man in our image Although the unsaved mans spirit, soul, and body are marred because of sin, he still bears the marks of Gods creation. 2. Man is an intellectual being. He is able to think. He can reason. He has ability to plan. This is a definite proof that he had a Creator who was also intellectual. Man could not get intellect from an unintellectual source. If the reasons behind the preceding arguments fall into place and are true, then the points all taken together form a proper approach to the proof of the existence of God. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Belief in God is universal. Man has a religious nature. There is uniformity in the laws of nature. Man is a moral and mental being. Man has an irresistible urge to ask for a first cause.

Therefore, unless a human history is absolutely false and human nature totally insane, the proof of the existence of God is present. An atheist once said, I thank God that I am an atheist. E. THE SCRIPTURAL PROOF. Only the saved believer can KNOW the Scriptural testimony. The Bible moves from a mere knowledge ABOUT God to the knowledge of HIM. To the believer, the Word of God is a more sure word than even an eyewitness. The Bible does not attempt to prove the existence of God. The Bible simply begins with this statement:

OPEN BIBLE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

Ge 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. It is useless to use anything other than the Scripture in order to show a lost man that he needs to be saved. Proofs A through D that we have listed may win an argument, but they will not convert the soul. The Holy Spirit uses the Word of God in regeneration (II Thessalonians 2:13). We are to preach the Word (II Timothy 4:2), and God will do the work. Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT Answer these questions on a separate sheet and write the memory work from memory. 1. Man is a __________________ in ____________________. 2. God said, Let ________ make man in ___________ image. 3. Man can ______________. He has ability to ____________. This is a definite proof that he had a _____________Who was also intellectual. 4. The Bible moves the person from a mere knowledge ____________ God to the knowledge of ___________. 5. The Holy Spirit uses the ___________ of ___________ in regeneration. 6. Memorize II Thessalonians 2:13 and Isaiah 55:11, so that you are able to write them from memory. Lesson 6

THE NATURE OF GOD

When we speak of the nature of God, we mean the character, being, essence, or quality. In this section of study, we look at what the Bible says regarding the essential character of God. The descriptive terms to describe the nature of God, the manifestations of God, and the emphasis on Gods personality are covered in this area of study. A. God is a Spirit. Joh 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The Bible states that God is a Spirit. Some modern translators claim that the a should be omitted. There is no reason from Scripture or logic to omit the article. Notice that if the article is eliminated, the passage could be understood as saying that all of that which is spirit is God. Since man has a part of him that is spirit (I Corinthians 2:11), and since there are unclean spirits of devils (Revelation 16:13-14), it is not proper to simply say that God is spirit. God is a Spirit. There are other spirits. Since God is a Spirit, He is worshipped in spirit. (The second spirit in John 4:24 is evidently that of man). Read the context (that which goes before and that which follows), of John 4:24 and you will see that the discussion had to do with the PLACE of worship and the GROUPS involved. The Lord Jesus emphasizes that God is a Spirit to show that man worships God in spirit as opposed to a certain place, in a certain group and with certain outward forms.

10

OPEN BIBLE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

God is a Spirit. A spirit does not have flesh and bones. (See Luke 24:39). But a spirit does have a body. Joh 5:37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. This body is not a material body. If it is, God could be seen by the material eye of man. The Bible says that God is invisible (Colossians 1:15). When the Bible speaks of God as having ears, eyes, face, etc., these are references to His Spirit body. To the natural, physical eye, God cannot be seen as a Spirit. (Exodus 33:11, 20). The Lord Jesus Christ came at His first coming with a body of flesh. He said that He that hath seen me hath seen the Father (John 14:9). No man had seen God (John 1:18), but at His coming, the Lord Jesus declared Him. The Lord Jesus Christ was the express image of His person (Hebrews 1:3), and the image of the invisible God. (Colossians 1:15). INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT Answer these questions on a separate sheet and write the memory work from memory. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. God is ________ Spirit. Another word instead of nature could be __________________. A spirit does not have _____________ and ______________. The Lord _____________ ___________ is the express image of Gods person. Memorize John 4:24 and John 5:37 so that you are able to write them from memory.

Lesson 7 B. God is Light. 1Jo 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. There are different kinds of light in the Bible. Notice in Genesis 1:3 that there is a created light. Ge 1:3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. This light cannot be the light of the sun because the sun is not created until three days later. Ge 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: There is also light that has to do with moral and spiritual quality. Mt 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. The Bible warns of false light. 2Co 11:4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. Just as under a black light certain colors glow while others are dull and undiscernable, the devil appears as an angel of light and bathes the sin in a misleading light.

11

OPEN BIBLE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

The Bible states that God is light to emphasize the fact that God searches out the intents of man and that nothing is hid from Him. Although man and devils attempt to disguise and hide their iniquity, yet all is naked and opened unto the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. Hebrews 4:13b). The Bible does not carry all the details of science and medicine, but it does have the essentials in these disciplines. An example of this is Job 38:19. Job 38:19 Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof, The Bible does not say the PLACE where light dwelleth. (Some modern Bible perversions have this reading). The Bible says the WAY where light dwelleth because light is constantly moving and is not fixed, or static, in the universe. The Bible is absolutely accurate in this scientific statement made thousands of years ago. INTSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT Answer these questions on a separate sheet and write the memory work from memory. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. God is ____________________. Genesis 1:3 refers to ___________________ light. The devil is a false __________________. All things are _______________ and _____________ unto the eyes of God. The Bible has the ____________________ of science and medicine. The light of Genesis 1:14 is the light of the__________________. Memorize Hebrews 4:13, I John 1:5 and II Corinthians 11:4 so that you are able to write them from memory.

Lesson 8 C. God is Love. 1Jo 4:8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. Religious liberals read this verse as though it said, Love is god. They exalt the physical level of love to the position of a god. An illustration of how this verse is misunderstood was given in the courtroom where the author was present. A Christian lady was under fire by the prosecuting attorney. He was trying to prove, among other things, that memorizing Bible verses was equivalent to concentration camp techniques of brainwashing and that rock music was not immoral when the lyrics spoke of love. What would you say if you heard me sing, What the world needs now is love, sweet love? He quizzed. The Christian lady replied, I would ask you what KIND of love you are talking about. The love the world talks about and sings about is not the love referred to in I John 4:8. God is love in that He offers to mankind salvation, peace, joy and eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ. Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

12

OPEN BIBLE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

Since the very nature of God is love, He sent His Son to pay for the transgressions of men so that those men, debts paid by Gods Son, could come into the presence of God. But any man rejecting that love of God and claiming that God loves him is both a fool and a liar. The liberal has never noticed that I John is not addressed to the world at large, but is directed to those who have fellowship with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ (I John 1:3). Here is Gods Word to the world: Joh 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. Gods wrath not love abides on the unbeliever. God tells the believer to LOVE NOT in I John 2:15 and tells him the HATE in Amos 5:15. The world has a concept of love on three levels: sex, generation, and pride. The love of the flesh is pleasure. The love of the eyes is to keep the race going. The love of pride is to exalt the race. Read I John 2:16. 1. Lust of the flesh: SATISFACTION OF PHYSICAL APPETITE. 2. Lust of the eyes: SATISFACTION OF PRORECREATION FOR THE SAKE OF CONTINUATION OF THE HUMAN RACE. 3. Pride of life: SATISFACTION OF EXALTATION. (Money, awards, position, education, etc.) This does not mean that sex is wrong but that sex is wrong outside the boundaries that are clearly defined in Gods Word. This does not mean that family generation is wrong but that is wrong outside the laws of Gods Word. This does not mean that business, education, achievement is wrong but that it is wrong outside the limits of Gods Word. Someone has observed, Every bad thing is a good thing twisted. Love is not bad except where the world system has twisted it to pervert its meaning and definition from that given to it in the Word of God. INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT Answer these questions on a separate sheet and write the memory work from memory. 1. 2. 3. 4. God is ____________, but ______________ is not God. The unbeliever is told that the _______________ of God is upon him. I John is addressed to __________________. Three levels of love as understood by the world are: lust of the __________, lust of the _____________, and the _____________ of life. 5. Memorize I John 4:8 and I John 2:15-16 so that you are able to write them from memory. D. God is a Consuming Fire. Heb 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.

13

OPEN BIBLE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

In the Bible fire represents judgment. It is usually a literal fire. However, in Hebrews 12:29, the fire is a figure of speech representing the judgment acts of God. This type of figure of speech is called a metaphor. The modernist, (one who does not accept the Bible as the Authority for faith and practice), never describes God as a God who judges sin. The modernist emphasizes love to the exclusion of judgment. To the modernist, God is a great, big lovable guy who gives good advice but never COMMANDS or judges you. The modernist would not think of describing God as a consuming fire. Mal 3:2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: Notice that Malachi describes God as like a refiners fire. When the adverb, like, is added to the metaphor, the figure of speech is then called a simile. Both the metaphor and simile are comparisons of two unlike things to teach a literal truth. The only difference between a metaphor and a simile is that the simile uses the adverbs, like or as, while the metaphor uses none. Mt 13:49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, 50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. The Lord Jesus Christ taught that the unsaved go into a furnace of fire. There is no justification to make this fire a figure of speech for no comparison is being made. The angels are literal beings. The wicked and just are literal people. The furnace of fire is a literal place. Mt 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: This is a judgment that takes place at the second coming of Christ. Again, there is no reason to make the event, persons, and things anything other than what they are stated to be. There are no comparisons drawn and no figures of speech given. But, some people do not believe there is a literal fire in hell. They find a figure of speech regarding fire in a passage like Hebrews 12:29 and try to make ALL fire in the Bible figurative. Why would a person want to air condition hell? Why would a person try to pretend that God has no LAWS, only suggestions? In the Bible, fire is used in a literal sense and in a figurative sense. The context must be carefully considered to distinguish between the two. It is no difficult and only requires a normal approach to the language with no ulterior reason to change what is plainly given in the context. God is His complete glory and uncovered holiness has never been seen by any man. Joh 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. The Word of God states that the Lord Jesus Christ in His present glory is dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see. (I Timothy 6:16). Whenever man is said to have seen God in the Bible, it is understood to be either a partial view or a veiled view. In Exodus 33:11, the Lord spake to Moses face to face. Ex 33:11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle. But Moses did not see Gods face. Ex 33:20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. The Lord Jesus Christ was God manifested in the flesh, (I Timothy 3:16). When men looked at Jesus, they were looking at God. Joh 14:8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? The Lord Jesus Christ was the express image of his person, (Hebrews 1:3). If the Lord Jesus Christ had not veiled His glory with flesh, no man could have stood before Him while He was on earth. Joh 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. There have been many false prophets who have claimed to be God. But the ONLY PERSON IN A BODY OF FLESH Who has walked on this earth and Who is the true God of all eternity is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is called the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. This separates the Lord Jesus Christ from all other sons of God. (See John 1:12). Men can become sons of God by receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior, but men can NEVER BECOME GOD THE SON! The only begotten Son IS the only begotten Son.

God appeared to man in His incarnation, (IN FLESH), and preincarnation, (BEFORE-IN-FLESH). Before God appeared to man in the Person of Jesus Christ, He appeared in various forms. These are called preincarnation appearances. PREINCARNATION APPEARANCES a. The Angel of the Lord. In the Bible, an angel always looks like a man. Angels do not have wings, halos, or long hair. Read Genesis 18:1 19:1 very carefully. You will see there are THREE MEN, (18:2), but they are: the LORD, (18:9-13, 33), and two created angels (18:2, 16, 22, 13; 19:1). All three men sit with Abraham and eat bread, butter, milk and roast beef, (18:6-8). The Angel of the Lord shows up several times in the Old Testament. (See Joshua 5:13-6:2). He appears in many instances as a man with all the attributes of Deity. There are also instances where God is manifested within other material form. b. Material Forms. (1) Burning bush Ex 3:4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. (2) Pillar of cloud and fire. Ex 13:21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: Ex 14:20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night. God has completed the revelation of Himself and His will for men in the Bible. Before the completion of the Bible, God appeared and spake in divers manners, (Hebrews 1:1), but when the final words of the Bible were written, God placed a warning to any person who thought that some additional revelation was needed. Re 22:18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: Any man who sees visions of God, angels, or any other appearances of God goes contrary to this statement in Revelation 22. Memorize I Timothy 6:14-16; John 1:14 and John 1:18 so that you are able to write them from memory. F. The Personality of God. God is a Person. If God was not a Person then man, (who is a person), could not have communion with God. There could be no worship if God was a mere force or influence, for worship involves the yielding of one person to another person. A lost man does not worship force or influences; he worships personalities. Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. The King James Bible defines principalities, powers, and rulers as persons. (See Titus 3:1). There are good ones and wicked ones! 1Co 10:19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? 20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Notice that sacrifice can be made to devils and that men can fellowship with devils. 1. The Names of God indicate His Personality. The Jews never pronounced this name because they believed it was too sacred to pass human lips. The name is constructed from the Hebrew language, Hebrew was written without vowels. The letters, YHWH, are transliterated into English as JHVH. The vowels: e, o, a, are added to make the English word, Jehovah. A group called Jehovahs Witnesses has denied basic doctrines of Gods Word and has made some doctrines. The Jehovahs Witnesses meet in places called Kingdom Halls. One false doctrine they have is that they deny Jesus Christ is the eternal God. They pervert the Bible and teach that Jesus Christ was a created being. Another false doctrine they have developed is that the only name God is to be called is Jehovah. Jehovah is used in Exodus 6:3; Isaiah 12:2, 26:4; Psalm 83:18. Combinations of that name are used in Genesis 22:14; Exodus 17:15; Judges 6:24. But God is also called Jah in Psalm 68:4. His Name is I AM THAT I AM according to Exodus 3:13-14. God calls Himself I AM THAT I AM and JAH as well as JEHOVAH. Are we to believe that the Jehovahs witnesses have more sense than God? The Bible, (notice THE Bible), addresses God as LORD in hundreds of places. The word, Jehovah, is found in only FOUR references. God is a ______________________. Gentiles sacrifice to ____________________. Hebrew words were written without _____________________. So-called Jehovahs Witnesses believe that Jesus Christ was a __________ being. In Psalm 68:4, Gods Name is _________________. 6. In Exodus 3:13-14, Gods Name is also ___ ___________ _______ ____ _____. 7. The Name used in hundreds of places to address God is ____________. 8. Memorize Ephesians 6:12, Exodus 3:13-14, Psalm 18:4 so that you are able to write them from memory. Lesson 12 2. The attributes of God indicate His Personality. Attributes refer to characteristics, qualities or properties. The attributes of God which indicate His Personality are called moral attributes. a. God grieves. Ge 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. Only a person can grieve. A force or impersonal power cannot grieve. b. God repents. 1Sa 15:35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel. God repents in that He changes His dealings with mankind. God retains the same attributes, (Hebrews 13:8; Malachi 3:6), but He changes the program for man from time to time as it pleases God. 1Sa 15:29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. Notice that in the same chapter within six verses of the statement that God repents in this statement: the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent. What is the answer to this seeming contradiction? God does not repent of things man must repent. Man is required to repent of ignorance, wickedness, or both, while God has none of these failings. God repents only in the sense that He changes His dealings with man. The change is always a righteous one. c. God loves. 1Jo 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

18

The love of God is always mentioned in the same context as that of the death of His son on the cross. God so lovedthat He gave. This is the love that only a Person could have. d. God hates. Pr 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: e. God hears, sees, corrects and knows. Ps 94:9 He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see? Only a Person could have all of the attributes listed. There is no possible way that an influence could have such capability. INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT Answer these questions on a separate sheet and write the memory work from memory. 1. Attributes mean: _______________, _____________, or _________________. 2. The attributes of God indicate that He is a _________________. 3. God never repents of _____________, but He does repent in that He changes His _____________ with man. 4. God hates ______________. 5. God loves ______________. 6. Memorize I Samuel 15:29 and Psalm 94:9-10 so that you are able to write them from memory. Lesson 13 3. Gods acts indicate His Personality. a. God created. God created the heaven and the earth, (Genesis 1:1). The Person of God is the only One Who could create. It is ridiculous to assume that a power without personality could create anything. Creation requires the ability to produce matter out of nothing. Creation requires the coordination of certain elements to produce and sustain harmony. Men speak of a piece of sculpture and say, Rodin created a masterpiece when he produced, The Thinker. However, men do not create. True creation is the work of God. Artists follow the principles of color, design and harmony of Gods creation. In a technical sense then, artists do not create, but rather copy Gods creation.

b. God sustains all of His creation.

Col 1:15 Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. God superintends His creation so that it does not fall into disorder and chaos. This indicates a very definite personality. The function of the various systems works in harmony, not only

19

within that particular system, but also work in harmony with other systems. What would happen if the tilt of the earth changed? What would happen if the earth was to move out of its orbit? Can you name some organs of your body that must continue functioning if you are to remain alive? There are several. Look up Hebrews 1:3 and see how things of creation are held together.

c. God cares for His creation.

God provides for the birds in His creation, (Matthew 6:26). God knows the number of hairs on your head, (Matthew 10:30), and the number of birds in the air and on the ground, (Matthew 10:29). If God cares for the birds, He will take care of you and all of His creation. 1Pe 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. Mt 10:31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. Only a Person can care and sustain. d. God promotes. Ps 75:6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. 7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. This type of activity can only be done by a Person. The judging in verse seven requires cataloging information, evaluating and then implementing certain actions based upon decision. Only a Person is capable of such actions. INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT Answer these questions on a separate sheet and write the memory work from memory. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Men do not _________________, but God did. God ___________________ all of His creation. If God did not do this, the creation would fall into _________ and _________. God ______________ for His creation. From which direction does the Bible way God judges the earth? Memorize Psalm 75:6-7; I Peter 5:7 so that you are able to write them from memory.

Lesson 14 4. The Trinity of God indicates Personality. a. God is One. The use of one must be defined by the Word of God. In Genesis 2:24 TWO persons are called ONE. Ge 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. There are two distinct persons with distinct and separate bodies, yet they are said to be one flesh.

20

OPEN BIBLE COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL

In Genesis 11:6, MANY persons are called ONE. Ge 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. In I Corinthians 3:8, TWO persons with separate and distinct ministries are still said to be ONE. 1Co 3:8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. The above usages of the term show that one can refer to more than one person with a variety of ministries. Many are said to be one when there is a unity of purpose. When the Bible says God is One, it is not claiming that only One Person is in the Godhead, rather it is a claim of unity in purpose and attributes in the Trinity. It is a TRI-UNITY. De 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: Isa 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: b. Plural pronouns are used to refer to the One God. Ge 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. Notice that God said, Let us make man Us is plural, more than one. God the Father created. Genesis 1:1. God the Son created. Colossians 1:16; John 1:3 God the Holy Spirit created. Job 26:13. This Divine Source of all things is the Father; the Divine Channel is the Son; the Divine Agent is the Holy Spirit. Three Persons in one Godhead. There are NOT three Gods, but three PERSONS in one Godhead. c. Passages that teach Three Persons in One. 1. Baptism of Christ. Matthew 3:16-17. One speaks from heaven, One descends from heaven, One is on earth. 2. Father is God. Romans 1:7. Son is God. Hebrews 1:8. Holy Spirit is God. Acts 5:3-4. Memorize Deuteronomy 6:4; Genesis 2:24; Matthew 3:16-17 so that you are able to write them from memory. Lesson 15 THE NATURAL ATTRIBUTES OF GOD A. The Omnipotence of God. God is all powerful. Re 19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Ge 18:14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. There are no limitations on Gods power. A man who denied the omnipotence of God said he could prove that God did not have all power. The question he posed was, Can God make a rock so big that He cannot move it? Notice that the question is geared so that your answer is restricted to yes or no. The answer to some questions is NOT a simple yes or no. A question which poses a similar perplexity is, Have you stopped beating your mother? Either yes or no is an admission of guilt. The answer to such logic is to see that God always acts consistently within His will. God would not make a rock so large that He could not move it. God never opposes Himself. Gods power extends over all His creation. He has power over NATURE, (Isaiah 2:10-22); MEN, (James 4:12-15), and ANGELS, (Daniel 4:35). B. The Omniscience of God. God is all knowing. Gods knowledge is not restricted by time, actions of His creatures, or the rebellion of man. (Isaiah 46:8-13). C. The Omnipresence of God. God is everywhere present. However, He is not IN everything. He is not present everywhere. Everything is present to God, but He is not present in everything. God is not in the birds, rocks, trees, air, etc., but all of these things are present to Him. The dwelling place of God is in the third heaven from which everything is present in His eyes. (I Kings 8:30). Ps 139:7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?

D. The Omnisapience of God. God has all wisdom. Not only does God know all, but He has discernment and judgment in bringing about His purpose throughout the ages. (Romans 11:33; Ephesians 1:9). E. The Eternality of God. The word, eternal, is used in two ways. One way is to refer to that which has a beginning but no end. (Example: angels). Another way is to refer to God Who had no beginning and will have no end. (Psalm 102:24-27). F. The Immutability of God. This simply means that God never changes. (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 6:17). Lesson 16 G.The Holiness of God. The Bible clearly teaches that God is holy. We need to understand, first of all, the Biblical viewpoint of the holiness of God. Isa 57:15 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. a. Notice the all caps there: LORD. Its Jehovah speaking. The Bible teaches that God the Father is holy. b. God the Son is holy. Ac 3:14 But ye denied the Holy One and the Just, and desired a murderer to be granted unto you; Peter here, in the context, is accusing Israel of rejecting Jesus Christ as their Messiah (Acts 3:12-14). He called the Lord Jesus the Holy One. c. God the Holy Spirit is holy. Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. The very fact that He is called the Holy Spirit teaches the fact that the Spirit of God is holy. 1. Gods works are holy. That Gods works are holy indicates the holiness of God.

a. There was nothing wrong with Gods original creation (Gen. 1:1).
God did not create sin. b. There was sin in the angelic order because of Lucifers pride. c. There was sin in the human race because of Adams disobedience.

2. Gods laws are holy.

When God gives laws, they are holy laws.

a. The Mosaic Law is holy.

Ro 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

b. The Old Testament Scriptures are holy.

2Ti 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 3. God hates sin. We know that God is holy because He hates sin. Pr 15:9 The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the LORD: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness. 26 The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words. God is holy that that even the thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to Him. The holiness of God is further emphasized in Isaiah 59:1,2.

Isa 59:1 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. A holy God cannot have fellowship with an unholy being. God cannot come close to sin. 4. God hates the sinner. This is an unusual thing to say in this present day when everybody says, Smile, God loves you. . a. The Bible says that God hates sinners, the workers of iniquity. Ps 5:5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.

b. God is angry with the sinner (the wicked) everyday.

Ps 7:11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day. c. Gods wrath abides on the sinner. Joh 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. God hates the sinner because of sin and wickedness. God will have nothing to do with the man who rejects Jesus Christ. We have no right to tell a man, who rejects the blood of Christ, that God loves him. Its true that God loves the sinner, but its all true that God hates him. God loves the sinner that He sent His only Son to die for his sin, that if he believes in Him and gets saved, he gets all the benefits of a child of God. But if the sinner rejects that work, he has no right at all to claim the love of God; for the wrath of God abides on him. Ps 10:3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth. H. The Righteousness and Justice of God. God is absolutely right, perfect, and just. In everything that He does, it is impossible for God to be wrong. 1. God loves righteousness. Heb 1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. 2. God is righteous.

3. Gods righteousness and justice are declared. (See Romans 3.)

Ro 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. 5 But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man) Ro 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Ro 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. 20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Ro 3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. INSTRUCTIONS TO THE BIBLE STUDENT
