1.0 GENERAL
1.1 Description of the Structure
The proposed RCC TANK structure is at Butibori, Nagpur. This Structure consists of 2 water tanks one over
another for purpose pressure break. The height of structure is 10 m below ground and 16.7 m above ground with
its inside diameter of tanks are 6.5 m.
1.2 Scope of the Calculation Report
The structures are analyzed using STAAD Pro and designed by hand calculations based on the provisions of IS
codes. The tank is analyzed for seismic / dynamic forces for response Spectrum method (calculated manually).The
concrete framed structure as shown in the following STAAD model has been subject to dead load, live loads,
water loads, wind load & seismic forces. Several load combinations as detailed below have been made in STAAD
for member design. The design calculations are taken for M30 grade of concrete and Fe 500 steel grade by
working stress design method.

2.0 DESIGN DATA

The various loads acting on the structure are as follows:
1. Self Weight / Dead weight of Structure
2. Live Load on tank upper slab.
3. Water Pressure from Inside.
4. Seismic load.
5. Wind load.
2.1 Basic Load Data
3.1.1

Dead Load
Dead loads shall consist of self weight and other permanent loads which are supported by the structure.

3.1.2

Live load
As per specification it is recommended to take 2 kN/m as live load on slab for design.

3.1.3

Seismic load
Load due to seismic: The earthquake forces are applied by using staad definition.
The parameters defined are,
Zone=III,
Z=0.16,
R=5,
I=1.75.

3.1.4

Wind load
Location = Nagpur
Basic Wind Speed (Vb) = 44 (As per code)
Design Wind Speed (Vz) = K1 x K2 x K3 x Vb
Where,
K1 = 1.07 (Risk coefficient, see cl. No. 5.3.1, Table-1)
K2 = 1.12 (Terrain, height & structure size factor)
K3 = 1 (Topography factor)
Vz = 52.73 KN/m2
Design Wind Pressure (Pz) = 0.6 x Vz x Vz
Pz = 1668.24643 N/m2
Pz = 1.67 KN/m2

4.0 UNIT WEIGHTS OF MATERIAL:

c=Density of Concrete = 25 kN/m

s=Density of Soil= 18 kN/m
sas= Density of Saturated Soil = 21 kN/m
sus = Density of Submerged Soil = 11 kN/m
w =Density of Water = 10 kN/m3

5.0 Dynamic behavior of elevated Water tank:
(Ref. The Dynamic Behavior of Water Tanks, By George W. Housner)
Inner diameter of tank = 6.5 m
Wall thk = 350 mm
Bottom slab = 350mm
Top slab = 175mm.
5.1.1

The dynamic behavior of tank-2 is calculated below

M = (Self weight of structure RL276.00m to 285.65m + water load tank-2)

. Column = (Length x Breadth x Height x Unit wt of concrete) x No. of columns
= (1.5 x 0.7 x 9.65 x 25) x 4
= 1013.25 kN
. Tank-2 bottom slab = ((3.14/4) x d2 x thk. x Unit wt of concrete)
= ((3.14/4) x 7.22 x 0.35 x 25)
=356.076 kN
. Tank-2 top slab = ((3.14/4) x D2 x thk. x Unit wt of concrete)
= ((3.14/4) x 7.22 x 0.175 x 25)
=178.038 kN
. Tank-2 wall = (perimeter x Height (excluding slab thk.) x thk. x Unit wt of concrete)
= (3.14 x 6.85 x 4.475 x 0.35 x 25)
=842.2 kN
. Water load = ((3.14/4) x D2 x Water height x Unit wt of water)
= ((3.14/4) x 6.52 x 3.4 x 10)
= 1127.65
Therefore,
M = 1013.25 + 356.076 + 178.038 + 842.2 +1127.65
M = 3517.21kN
M = 775404 lb
The load values and lengths taken for calculations are in Pound and Feet resp.
Where, R = radius of tank = 3.25m = 10.663 ft
H = height of water = 3.4m = 11.155 ft

5.1.2

The dynamic behavior of tank-1 is calculated below

M1 = (Self weight of structure RL 285.65m to 292.675m+ water load tank-1)

. Column = (Length x Breadth x Height x Unit wt of concrete) x No. of columns
= (1.5 x 0.7 x 7.725 x 25) x 2
= 369 kN
. Beam = (Length x Depth x Width x Unit wt of concrete)
= (9.2 x 0.9 x 0.4 x 25)
= 82.8 kN
. Tank-2 bottom slab = ((3.14/4) x d2 x thk. x Unit wt of concrete)
= ((3.14/4) x 7.22 x 0.35 x 25)
=356.076 kN

= ((3.14/4) x 7.22 x 0.175 x 25)
=178.038 kN
. Tank-2 wall = (perimeter x Height (excluding slab thk.) x thk. x Unit wt of concrete)
= (3.14 x 6.85 x 4.5 x 0.35 x 25)

M1= 659998.60 lb

Load calculations:
Maximum pressure is taken for design calculations. For pressure calculations self weight of footing,
load coming from soil above and axial load of structure are taken
Pmax
Safe bearing capacity of soil = 400 kN/m2 > Pmax.
Load per running meter on footing,
= 385 x 2.7 = 1039.5 1050 kN/m
Max. Bending moment & twisting moments are as follows
For calculating the moments, coefficients are taken from book RCC designs- B.C. Punmia, table no.
21.1), Structure is supported on 4 columns
Moment at Column,
Midspan moment,
Twisting moment,
Where, R= radius of structure = 3.9m
= Angle between the two supports with centre = 90o

C1, C2, C3 = Moment coefficients= 0.137, 0.070, 0.021 resp.

Therefore,
Mo = 3437 kN.m
Mc = 1756 kN.m
Mt = 527 kN.m
Design parameters for working stress design method:
Permissible stress in Steel st = 275 N/mm, cbc = 10 N/mm
n= 0.253
j= 0.916
Q= 1.16
Depth check:

d = 1048 mm
Cover = clear cover + (Bar Dia / 2) = 50 + 12.5 = 62.5 mm
d reqd < d provided (1737.5mm)
Reinforcement calculations: reinforcement is calculated for both bending and twisting moments
Therefore, Equivalent bending moment
Me= Mo + M1
Where,
Mo = 3437 kN.m
(

)
(

M1 = 517 kN.m
Me = 3437 + 517
Me = 3954 kN.m
Ast required,

Ast. req = 9034mm2.

Ast minimum,

Design Report of Water Tank (Break Pressure Tank,

Butibori)
Doc. No. : REL-BGCPP-VES-144-R-00813 & -R-00820

Ast.min = 7975 mm2. (As per IS 456-2000)

Ast. req > Ast. min
Therefore, provide
20 25 T bottom bars.
Shear check:
Shear force,

V = 6432.5 kN
Equivalent shear Ve,

Ve = 6432.8 6435 kN
Check for One way shear:
