Perbandingan Alfresco dan Knowledge Tree

Strong methods for internal document conversion using aspects Concerns: 1. Lack of clear and up to date documentation 2. Multiple XML files in several locations for configuration 3. Pricing is not open 4. Installation is a PITA 5. Long term maintenance of a OSS installation could be an worry Harga : USD 2495 Knowledge Tree Benefits: 1. Easy to install 10 minutes 2. Easy to configure and maintain 3. Very good documentation 4. Basics done well 5. Seems to have a strong community Concerns: 1. Scalability 2. UI could be more usable 3. Additional translations provided by community and could be out of date 4. Webdav access not ideal, requires buying commercial version for proprietary KTexplorer tool Harga : $20 per user per month Long View: With a mind to the above, Ill I intent to focus on three of the main differences between Alfresco and KT Java vs PHP, CIFS vs Proprietary KTExplorer, and Extra Features. Java vs PHP A java application might naturally be considered more scalable than a php application. Not only in the perceived greater depth of clustering options, but with basic stuff like dealing with large files. While clustering is not something that I considered, Alfresco does have a cluster options in the commercial version. It might also be possible to use load balances to scale both Alfresco and KT, but again not part of my consideration. More importantly a basic part of scalability for a DMS is dealing with large files. Both Alfresco (java) and KT (php) work fine in fact php aside I was able to upload a 100MB PDF to KT via both the web and ktexplorer interfaces.

Epiware
Epiware salah satu solusinya. Epiware adalah sebuah Open Source DMS berbasis website yang berlisensi GPL. Epiware ada dua versi, yaitu Desktop Edition (Non Free) dan Web Based Edition. Nah yang web based edition lah yang free dan dikembangkan menggunakan PHP. Epiware menggunakan pendekatan Web 2.0 yang hampir keseluruhannya kental sekali dengan Ajax. Untuk sekelas Open Source DMS yang dikembangkan menggunakan PHP, Epiware memberikan pengalaman menggunakan DMS yang memuaskan karena dilengkapi fitur yang cukup untuk sebuah DMS. Ditambah dengan fitur-fitur lain seperti Calendar, Wiki, Task/Gantt Chart dan News Room. Untuk Fitur dasar dari DMS nya adalah sebagai berikut :

Mangakomodasi Banyak Proyek. Pencarian terhadap isi dokumen dan metadatanya. Kontrol Akses terhadap Direktory menggunakan User/Group ACL. Histiris Akses Terhadap Dokumen. Historis Versi dari Dokumen. Check-in dan Check-out.

Selain Fitur-fitur di atas, berdasarkan pengalaman saya mengimplentasikannya, Epiware cocok sekali untuk di implementasi bagi Sebuah Instansi/Perusahaan yang mempunya banyak branch/anak perusahaan. Sayangnya untuk versi web based edition, hanya compatible untuk lingkungan linux, hal ini dikarenakan library-library di dalamnya hanya disediakan untuk running di lingkungan linux. Tapi Jangan terlalu kecewa dulu, berhubung dikembangkan dengan PHP anda pasti bisa untuk mengubah Bahasa, Style, Logo-logo, dan mungkin ingin menambahkan fitur di dalamnya. Sebagai informasi tambahan, Epiware adalah tool yang dipakai oleh Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT).
