Having to support Windows in my day to day job (I'm the Windows administrator) is a necessary evil.

I was wondering why my test deployment of Windows 7 was so slow copying files. Turns out it was due to bandwidth throttling, a "feature" since Vista. Windows 7 seems to throttle bandwidth, especially on a LAN and it's based on helping to prevent little or no interruption to audio playback. This can be damn annoying, especially when copy large files across an intranet. Two registry settings that seem to prevent or alleviate the throttling are: (DWORD value) HKLM\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanworkstation\parameters\DisableBandwidthThrottling (create if it doesn't exist and set to 1 to disable and then reboot) or HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile\NetworkThrottlingIndex (set to a value between 1 and 100 and reboot) Also another possibility is to disable the MMCSS (Multimedia Class Scheduler) service - from wikipedia: "This service has been implicated in poor networking performance while multimedia is playing", or "Windows throttles the network interfaces while audio is playing in order to maintain audio quality and prevent network interrupts interrupting media playback. By default, this limits the network receive speed to 10% of its maximum - 100Mbps on gigabit ethernet, and 10Mbps on fast ethernet" The service is is a dependancy in the windows audio service (the dependancy needs to be removed so windows audio can still run) so in regedit, go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Audiosrv, find DependOnService and remove MMCSS and restart. Finally, in the services control panel, services.msc, disable Multimedia Class Scheduler service and restart. Voila!

Hi Guys, If you are frustrated by slow speed of your BSNL Broad band Internet speed then there is nothing to worry about it. Im giving you few TIPS & TWEAKS which will surely help you to increase your Internet speed but do it on your own risk. For me its work GREAT. As you all know sharing knowledge will help you to increase your knowledge, so please do share your knowledge. BSNL usually provide LAN Broadband 256 kbps (kilo bits per second) connection. Dont be fool when you connect to internet and its state the speed of 10 or 100 Mbps. Its only states that your copper telephone cable or connections have the CAPACITY to provide that kind of speed. In our country (India) the fastest internetconnection is 8 mbps (mega bits per second) which is provided by BSNL and Airtel planning to launch its 8 mbps DSL broadband service next year. Before Starting check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net/ . while checking your speed do not use any other internet based program. * PLEASE FOLLOW THESE TIPS & TWEAKS EXACTLY AS PROVIDED This TIPS & TWEAKS is for WINDOW XPTM PRO USERS ONLY By default (even with QoS disabled) Windows XP reserves up to 20 percent of your connections bandwidth.

To override this reserve take the following steps. Make sure you Log on as Administrator, not as a user with Administrator privileges. * * * * * * * * * * Start > Run > type gpedit.msc You will see [Local Computer Policy] Expand the [Administrative Templates] branch Expand the [Network] branch Highlight [QoS Packet Scheduler] Double-click [Limit Reservable Bandwidth] Check [Enabled] Change [Bandwidth limit %] to 0 % Click [Apply] [OK] Restart

If you share your computer then either turn off other computer or limit it reservable bandwidth by the following tips:* * * * * * * * * * Start > Run > type gpedit.msc You will see [Local Computer Policy] Expand the [Administrative Templates] branch Expand the [Network] branch Highlight [QoS Packet Scheduler] Double-click [Limit Reservable Bandwidth] Check [Enabled] Change [Bandwidth limit %] to 60 % or 70% or 80% Click [Apply] [OK] Restart

This process will limit the bandwidth of the sharing computer. Use good processor & minimum 2GB of RAM For surfing the Net I recommend all of you to use Mozilla Firefox (latest version). Dont use Internet Explorer its bulls---. Do not open more than three pages at the same time coz it will divide the bandwidth & slowdown youre Surfing. Also do not download more than two files (if both file is more than 30mb combing). If you guys like to use some software which claims that its increases your internet speed I recommend only TCP/IP Optimizer. Other software is bulls---. You can download TCP/IP Optimizer from www.speedguide.net . Please follow the instruction provide in the site and then install in your PC. Use CCLEANER to clean your registry, its safe & fast. You can download it from www.piriform.com or www.filehippo.com Use Light weight Anti-Virus or Internet security, I recommend Kaspersky. If you use Kaspersky or Zone Alarm then there is no need to run window defender & window firewall, just turn it off.
Do you use a wireless network connection? If so, try this fix: 1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options .

2. Click Change plan settings next to your current power plan. 3. Click Change advanced power settings . 4. Double-click Wireless Adapter Settings . 5. Double-click Power Saving Mode . 6. Change the setting to Maximum Performance
