MY TRACTOR
With thousands of readers, there has to be at least two people who
are interested in tractor articles. So I need just one person besides
myself and we are good to go!!
e workhorse of my small tractor eet, is my second oldest, but
at 32 years old, it is still going strong and is my go-to tractor for
the heavy work. Its the one that ventures o of the woods road to
blaze new trails and to haul out wood. It is also the only tractor
that has the space to carry the many items needed for the hard
jobs.
My chainsaw sits in a case out on one rear fender, while an axe
sits inside the cabin beside my seat. Outside on the loader, I have
a bracket to hold my peavey for moving logs or trees around if
needed. Until I nd a logging winch or wench, I have a 20 plus
foot hunk of chain hanging o brackets on the other side of the
loader. Also hanging o the loader are lopping shears for trimming
branches (instead of using chainsaw), a two-ton manual winch for
hauling me (hopefully) out of places I shouldnt have been, and a
shovel (for self burial if nothing else works)!!
Inside the cab, I have a hard hat with face shield, that I should
use but never do, two or three pairs of gloves, a small maul-like
hammer (protection from coyotes and angry wife), numerous
bolts and pins, tools and a fairly short eight foot chain, along with
gas and chain oil for my chainsaw.
e tractor started out life weighing a little over 4,000 lbs but
now weighs somewhere in the vicinity of 120,000 lbs and can
barely move (just kidding)!!
It is amazing, when I think about it. With all of the problems in the
world both near and far, why would I write about a tractor?? Well
for one thing, tractors arent depressing!! One of the great things
about our publications is that with possibly a rare exception, all
of the news is positive. And believe me, that can be very hard to
nd today. While there is nothing wrong with getting the real
news on life, a continuous barrage of bad news is depressing and
so people begin to feel hopeless about the future and that there is
nothing that can be done.
Fortunately, our publications are just loaded with people and
organizations being very busy trying to solve at least some of the
worlds problems and believe me, that is a good thing. Change
almost never occurs out of depression, but rather hope and
inspiration. 800

Dinner and Auction held
on April 28
th
hosted by Dr.
Eshwar & Mrs. Vittu Kumar,
enjoyed an elegant evening of fine cuisine, all in support of
the Canadian Cancer Society. Held at Rothesay Netherwood
School, the event raised more than $90,000 for cancer
research, as well as prevention and advocacy initiatives and
support for people living with cancer in New Brunswick.
This brings the 11-year total to more than $570,000.
The more than 360 guests who attended the charity event
enjoyed an outstanding menu of authentic East Indian fare,
prepared by Mrs. Kumar, with help from a dedicated team
of volunteers. There was also an auction, presided over by
Auctioneer Kevin Bond, and a Bollywood dance performed
by Rondos Out of Proportion Dance Co.

MISSED THE INCOME TAX DEADLINE?
If you did not meet the April 30
th
deadline for completing your
2011 income tax return, or missed completing it in previous
years, you may be missing out on available government funds
or tax credits such as the GST tax credit or the Universal Child
Tax Benet. Some benets can be claimed retroactively upon
submission of your returns.
Following a successful two seasons of operation of the
volunteer Income Tax Clinic at St. Pauls Church in Rothesay
(98 returns completed in 2011 and 174 in 2012), the operator
of this clinic is oering to continue to do returns on computer,
by appointment, up until the end of September. Aer that date
it is not possible to e-le 2011 returns (older returns have to be
printed and mailed).
You qualify to take advantage of this free service if your 2011
income was less than $30,000 for individuals or $35,000 for
couples. Please note that the Canada Volunteer Income Tax
Program does not complete returns involving capital gains,
business or rental income, or bankrupt or deceased persons.
Returns as far back as 2006 can be submitted for completion.
All papers relating to your returns must be supplied.

There are many ways to take action on protecting and
preserving our natural environment. It is important to
recognize that every effort counts, big or small.
Green Tips
Trees are essential to the planet and to humans. Plant
a tree and reap in the many benefits!
Get a green bin and start collecting organic waste.
Avoid waste by using reusable cloths and rags instead
of paper towels to clean.
Instead of using chemicals and paper towels to wash
your windows, try 125 ml vinegar (1/2 cup) and 1L
water (4 cups) and a squeegee.
If space is limited, try growing organic vegetables in
containers or window boxes.
Have a garage sale to help recycle your unwanted
items. Someone's trash is another's treasure.
Instead of throwing something in the garbage, recycle
it instead! Old homework papers, cardboards and
newspapers are examples of things you can easily
recycle.
Donate electronic equipment to specific recycling
groups or recycle them. This will help reduce pressure
on landfills.
When buying wooden fencing and garden furniture,
consider whether the wood is from a well-managed
forest. Deforestation is a serious problem in some areas
of the world leading to loss of topsoil and flooding,
amongst other problems.
When boating, avoid stirring up bottom sediment with
propellers. Keep personal watercraft out of shallow
areas that are critical habitat for spawning fish, aquatic
plants, and aquatic invertebrates.

THAT IS THE QUESTION?
Now that the risk of killing a frost is nally over, its likely that
there will be a mad rush to the garden centers and the household
budgets will again be in a perilous state. If you are fortunate
enough to have a deer proof fence, the sky is the limit, if not, then
its wise to pick as many deer proof items as possible.
ere are a number of interesting plants and bushes that seem
to be either very low on our white tailed friends dietary list, or
happily, o their list all together. For several years, despite the
regular appearance of these beasties, I have grown the following
with great success:
Lavenders; Forsythia; bush and vine Honeysuckles; Epimedium,
a low perennial with delightful pink, yellow or red delicate
blooms, followed by heart shaped leaves that turn a beautiful deep
red color as they mature; Deutzia, a shrub with delicate fragrant
blossoms and pale green leaves; Fox Gloves; Burning Bush; Ladys
Mantle; Barberry; Caragana; Peonies; Hawthorns and assorted
Clematis. So far the Wisteria has remained in tact however, now
that it is trailing temptingly over the fence I am not sure of its
future.
No matter how rm I am in my resolve to abide by the Dont
Feed the Deer, concept, the fact remains that if we garden at all,
we are providing food for them ... anyway, there are plants that
are simply too beautiful to pass up and there is protection for
them. Its wise to keep these purchases within reasonable bounds,
namely the numbers that one can easily spray on a regular basis.
My dentist recently suggested that since deer avoid the Narcissus
family, (Daodils and the like), that a blend of the faded blooms
with a few of the leaves might be a good base for the next miracle
repellant. I shall have a go, since it is time to cut the blossoms
down anyway, I shall mix in a little oil or beaten egg to help the
mixture adhere to the leaves and Hey Presto, we might just strike
gold; enough perhaps to pay for a really fancy lling!!
While you are at it, cut down the entire blossom bearing stems
from tulips and crocus, but compost them as they are the #1
favorite food. By taking o the spent blooms the plant then will
put all its energies into strengthening the bulb, instead of working
hard on producing a nice fat seed pod. e results will provide
many more owers next year.
Happy gardening, even if it means scaling your diet to wieners
and beans! 805

Six-year old Gabriel Arseneault,
from Upperton, is the youngest child in the Maritmes
to be diagnosed with Huntngton Disease. This
conditon is very rare in a child and is usually found in
adults or juveniles. Huntngton Disease remains
incurable.
In support of his family (Mom is a single parent to
Gabriel and his toddler twin brother and sister) there
will be an Aucton at the Central Kings Rec Centre in
Titusville on Saturday, June 16

CBZ NEWS
Cherry Brook Zoo (CBZ) has two
Siberian Tigers who are members of
the international conservation program
called Species Survival Program (SSP).
e aim of SSP is to increase the captive
populations and improve genetic diversity of Endangered
Species. Your zoo has a long history of SSP work. Other zoo
residents currently on SSP are all the monkeys and the snow
leopard.
Siberian Tigers, the largest of the big cats, are endangered due
to loss of habitat, and prey plus poaching for the illegal black
market industry that supplies Asian tradition medicine. Eight
species of tigers once existed. ree species are now extinct and
remembered in your zoos Vanished Kingdom Park.
Tiger Pam is age 23 and Nyla is age six. Many visitors have
asked about Pam and her current condition. e longest living
tiger in a zoo was 25 years old. Pam obviously is showing her
age. CBZ does not believe in euthanasia based simply on age.
Pam is under veterinarian care. She has produced young and is
a retired SSP tiger. Pams male ospring, Baikal, who grew up at
your zoo is at the top of the SSP stud list for Siberian Tigers. He
has gone on to produce his own ospring thus carrying on Pams
bloodline. Pam will continue to be monitored regularly by our
zoo veterinarian.
e Zoo and its Miniature Golf course are open 10:00am to

celebrations were held at both Kings Way Care Centre in
Quispamsis and at Kennebec Manor in Saint John. Nutrition

e Hampton Ladies Only Triathlon will be held on Sunday,

starting at 8:30am. Our aim with this race is to
encourage ladies to take part in our event and if they get hooked
on the sport to continue and race throughout the summer in the
remainder of the Subaru East Coast Tri Series. Our race series
is sponsored by Subaru and events are sanctioned by Triathlon
New Brunswick.
Our unique ladies only event is a great no-pressure opportunity
to take part in your rst Triathlon or Duathlon. Aer a 400m
pool swim you will ride towards Hampton and out to Bloomeld
for 10k before turning and retracing your route back to the pool
for the start of your two-lap-2.5k run through the Dutch Point
Park Trail.
Our Duathlon featuring a 2.5k run and then following the same
bike route as the Triathlon before nishing up with a nal 2.5k
run was very popular in 2011. For those non-swimming ladies
this is a unique opportunity to take part in your rst Duathlon.
We promote our event to Novices and those ladies who are
interested in taking part in their rst Triathlon/Duathlon but
we also welcome those more experienced athletes who can use
the race as a sharpener for the forthcoming season - everyone

had the opportunity to represent NB at the Canadian Chess
Challenge at Saints Marys University in Halifax. He played nine
games and came in second place in the Grade 6 Competition.
Winning is no surprise to Sam and his family. Last year he placed
rst, winning the gold medal at Canadian Chess Challenge.
Sam and his family moved to Canada less than a year and a half
ago. ey immigrated from China in February of 2011. Sams
mother, Yang Bai is a student in the Language Program at the
Saint John Y. She travels with her son to various tournaments
and oen participates as referee. 605

40 YEARS LATER
As odd it seems to me, it has been 40 years since my high school
graduation. It does not seem possible, but a simple subtraction
conrms the truth of it: 2012-1972 = 40 years! Yikes.
What was happening way back then? Pierre Elliot Trudeau
was prime minister, Richard Nixon was the president of the
United States (Watergate was a couple of years down the road),
and Richard Hateld was premier of New Brunswick (and so
was the Bricklin). A new house cost in the $25,000 - $30,000
range. Gas was 36 cents a gallon (which would be approximately
8 cents per liter except we werent using the metric system
then). New Brunswick o cially became Canadas only bilingual
province - and removed e Picture Province from our license
plates. e number one movie of the year was e Godfather,
the number one song was Don McLeans American Pie and All
in the Family was the number one TV show (yes, we did have
television then). M.A.S.H. premiered in 1972. For sports fans,
that was year Paul Henderson scored the goal of the century in
the Canada vs Soviet Union hockey Summit series. It was also
the year 11 Israeli athletes were killed in the Munich Summer
Olympics terrorist attack.
In the midst of all that, a grand total of 38 Grade 12 students
at Hampton High School approached graduation. Amazingly
when we sat down to plan a 40
th
reunion, with one or two
exceptions we know where all 38 are today or can nd out fairly
easily. One of the benets of a small community. So we will get
together for an evening to catch up a little and brag about our
grandkids and maybe rekindle some of that youthful energy and
anticipation of what life had in store for us as we looked ahead
at age 18. Age is just a number. True terror is to wake up one
morning and discover that your high school class is running the
