1. First Thing First

A PC (desktop, laptop/notebook) or a PDA needs to be Bluetooth capable and ready to be able to communicate with any Bluetooth devices. After installing the drivers for the Bluetooth hardware (built-in on the motherboard or added-on through a USB port) to the Operating System (OS), you will see the Bluetooth icon

on the computers task bar (a.k.a. Bluetooth tray icon, typically located at the lower right corner) along with the related folders created under All Programs

and a shortcut called My Bluetooth Places.

For Bluetooth connectivity, be mindful about the status shown by the icon appearance.

Enabled

Not Enabled

Connected

Enabled: Bluetooth is ready to be used, not yet connected with any outside devices. Not Enabled: On-board Bluetooth is either turned off or its add-on hardware not plugged in. It will become Enabled as soon as OS detects it and makes it ready. Connected: The computer is working through the Bluetooth for data transmission.

2. Bluetooth Configuration for MS Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Higher

Note: If there is at least one COM port already installed, there is no need to perform this step. You only need to take a note of this COM port number which will be used in the software such as ScanTool.net or ScanMaster Pro. 2

6. Using Millisi ELM327 Bluetooth Interface

Congratulations on your purchase of this advanced tool for OBD-II compliant vehicle diagnostic and tuning applications! Here are the steps which guide you through the setup as well as show you the key things involved in its application with compatible software. In this example, ScanTool.net ver. 1.13 is used as OBD software running on Windows XP. The essence is the same when it is used with any other software. (1) Plug millisi ELM327 Bluetooth interface to a vehicles OBD data link connector. The LED at the rear end will start to flash. This indicates that the devices Bluetooth pairing with a nearby computer is not established. Turn the key on so all the gauges on the instrument panel are light up. This is to power the ECUs for the upcoming interrogation needs. It is not necessary to start up the engine; unless you need to monitor sensors relating to engines working condition. (2) If your computer is not fully booted up, please do so and let it finish booting course completely. After that, enable the computers Bluetooth connection. See the sections above. (3) Launch My Bluetooth Places in one of the ways shown here and search for nearby Bluetooth device. Launch via All Programs

Launch via Bluetooth Tray Icon

My Bluetooth Places is open.

Search for devices via pull-down menu.

10

Millisi_Bluetooth_ELM327_Interface_User_Guide.doc

After you initiated the search, you shall wait a little bit. Please let the search torch light to vanish and the interface device is shown in the window upon the end of the search. Search is still under the way

11

Millisi_Bluetooth_ELM327_Interface_User_Guide.doc

Search is now over.

12

Millisi_Bluetooth_ELM327_Interface_User_Guide.doc

Double click on the millisi device. Depending on various type of Bluetooth hardware response, you will likely experience the two screens or the latter one only as shown below. Discovering is under the way

13

Millisi_Bluetooth_ELM327_Interface_User_Guide.doc

Discovering is over.

14

Millisi_Bluetooth_ELM327_Interface_User_Guide.doc

(4) Double click on Dev B on millisi icon. You will see this screen reporting the progress and then be notified at the lower right corner with the message stating that PIN Code is required for the device.

15

Millisi_Bluetooth_ELM327_Interface_User_Guide.doc

Click OK. 16

(5) At this point, Bluetooth connection between the interface device and the PC has been established. The blue LED is steady. You will be told what COM number is in use. You can also check the serial COM port number from Client Applications tab in Bluetooth Configuration message box. This is what the OS has assigned a numbered COM port for a serial client. We are going to use it or one of them if there are multiples. If you dont see any, please see the relevant section above for adding one.

Note: if the blue LED still flashes, the connection is not established. You need to repeat the step by removing the pairing completely first, and then go back to sStep 3. (6) At this point, the step shown here is strongly recommended for new Bluetooth users although it is regarded as optional. This is to avoid running software lock-up issue due to discrepancy of COM ports in use. Before launching ScanTool.net, please go to the installed program folder of this software and look for file called scantool.cfg. This following screen shows the typical document path and files present in the said folder.

When the file is open, this is how it looks:

20

Millisi_Bluetooth_ELM327_Interface_User_Guide.doc

Pay attention to the line start with comport_number = under [comm] block. This number is for COM port # selected in this software which the communication is going to pass through. Note that comport_number increment from 0 up. comport_number = 0 is equal to COM1. Here in this example pictured, comport_number is 5, it means that COM6 is in use as registered in Option of the software. If the Bluetooth COM port as given by OS is COM6, this is already good, no discrepancy. Otherwise, you need to change this value for compoart_number to an appropriate one which is COM# (as given) minus 1. Save the file if any changes have been made. Close it all out. You are in good shape and ready to launch ScanTool.net. (7) With all the conditions as described in the previous steps, launch ScanTool.net. You will see these screens one by one as it progresses. First phase

(9) Final remarks. Here are a few screen shots showing the meanings for your reference in case you run into things unexpected. Pairing with the device is not established.

Pairing with the device was established but not connected.

28

Millisi_Bluetooth_ELM327_Interface_User_Guide.doc

When Bluetooth connection is not established and ScanTool.net is launched, you will see this screen.

When this happens, exit the software program, open My Bluetooth Places, search for the device (wait till the search finishes), establish the connection as shown above in Step 3, then launch the program again.
