The Iollowing are general precautions that are not related to any speciIic procedures
and, thereIore, do not appear elsewhere in this publication. These are recommended precautions
that personnel must understand and apply during many phases oI operation and maintenance.

SHOCK HAZARD

Observe general precautions Ior handling equipment using high voltage. Always
disconnect power beIore perIorming repair or test operations.

HEALTH AND SAFETY HAZARD

Solvent used to clean parts is potentially dangerous. Avoid inhalation oI Iumes and
also prolonged skin contact.

RESUSCITATION

Personnel working with or near high voltages should be Iamiliar with modern methods
oI resuscitation. Such inIormation may be obtained Irom the Naval Medical Command.

The Iollowing warnings appear in the text and are repeated here Ior emphasis.

Electrical shock and/or explosion hazard. To avoid serious personal injury, death or property
damage due to electrical shock, and/or ignition oI hazardous atmospheres, SHUT OFF ALL
POWER to the actuator beIore removing the actuator cover. (Page 6-2.)

!

Series 75 actuators are electro-mechanical devises subject to normal wear and tear. Actuator
liIe is dependent upon application and environmental conditions. II applied in hazardous
services, such as but not limited to, media temperature extremes, toxins, Ilammables, or other
services where improper or incomplete operation could produce a saIety hazard, it is incumbent
upon the system engineer and user to provide proper warning devices such as temperature
sensors, oxygen sensors, and Ilow sensors at elevated temperatures the duty cycle has to be
derated, consult Iactory. Worcester also recommends that the auxiliary limit switches be used
Ior monitoring and/or electrical interlock, heater with thermostats as well as drain/breather
Iitting (v53 option) are recommended Ior humid environments when moisture may condense
inside the housing. Please note that weatherprooI enclosures will 'breathe over time and
condensation within the housing will result. (Page 6-2.)

WARNING
WARNING
S6437-BJ-MMC-010
vii/(viii blank)

Do not apply more than 25 pounds oI rim pull Iorce to the hand wheel. (Page 6-1.)

For actuators with dual DC motor module, Iailure oI one motor may mechanically damage the gear
train. (Page 6-3.)

For pre-installation storage, Worcester recommends that all products which must be stored prior to
installation be stored indoors, in an environment suitable Ior human occupancy. Do not store
products in areas where exposure to relative humidity above 85, acid or alkali Iumes, radiation
above normal background, ultraviolet light, or temperatures above 120 degrees F or below 40
degrees F may occur. Do not store within 50 Ieet oI any source oI ozone. (Page 6-3.)

Do not bend the limit switch lever arm. (Page 6-3.)

It is recommended that the actuator motor not be driven directly Irom the PLC output. The inrush
current/back EMF can destroy the PLC output card triacs iI they are not oI suIIicient rating. As a
minimum these should be rated 800 volt, 12 amp triacs. In addition to these ratings, snubber
circuits should be utilized to help protect the triacs. This applies to 120 VAC motors only. 240
VAC motors should never be driven directly Irom a PLC output card. (Page 6-4.)

Do not bend switch arms when adjusting cams Ior actuator travel limits. Doing so will damage the
cams. (Page 6-5.)

Do not overstretch the snap ring(s), use the minimum opening to allow snap rings(s) to slip over
the gear. (Page 6-7.)

Lubricant should be added at a steady moderate pressure. II added under heavy pressure bearing
shield(s) may collapse. Do not over grease. (Page 7-4.)

1-1. GENERAL INFORMATION

1-2. Introduction: SelI-cleaning strainers are
provided in single-screen and dual-screen
conIigurations. Types AH, SA, and SH are the
single-screen conIigurations and Types DA and DH
are dual-screen conIigurations.

a. AH type selI cleaning strainer, Iurnished
in 2-inch pipe size, consists oI a cast
bronze body containing one rotating
screen assembly to retain and remove
particles Irom the water Ilow that are
larger than the openings in the perIorated
screen material.

b. DA type selI-cleaning strainer, Iurnished
in 6-inch pipe size, consists oI a cast
bronze body containing two rotating
screen assemblies to retain and remove
particles Irom the water Ilow that are
larger than the openings in the perIorated
screen material.

c. DH type selI-cleaning strainers, Iurnished
in 3-inch, 4-inch, 6-inch, 8-inch, and 12-
inch pipe sizes, consist oI a cast bronze
body containing two rotating screen
assemblies to retain and remove particles
Irom the water Ilow that are larger that the
openings in the perIorated screen material.

d. SA selI-cleaning strainers Iurnished in
2-1/2 inch pipe size consist oI a cast
bronze body containing one rotating
screen assembly to retain and remove
particles Irom the water Ilow that are
larger then the openings in the perIorated
screen material.

e. SH selI-cleaning strainers Iurnished in
1-1/2 inch, 2-inch, 2-1/2-inch, and 3-inch
pipe sizes, consist oI a cast bronze body

containing one rotating screen assembly to
Ilow that are larger than the openings in
the perIorated screen material.

1-3. Principles oI Operation: Strainers operate on
the peripheral inIlow method oI particle retention.
The body contains one or more cylindrical shaped
screens and routes the Ilow oI water Irom the
exterior oI the perIorated cylinder to the interior,
with the strained water exiting through the open end
oI the screen assembly. Figures 1-1 and 1-2 depict
water Ilow in single and dual conIiguration strainers.
Particles larger than the screen perIorations that do
not adhere to the screen assembly are either
suspended in the water circulating around the
exterior oI the strainer, or Iall into the sump area.
Particles that adhere to the surIace oI the screen
assemblies will be removed during the cleaning
cycle.

For AH, DH, and SH Type (manual) Systems: The
Ilush valve(s) and the overboard discharge valve(s)
must be opened manually and the external screen
hand wheel(s) oI the strainer(s) rotated several
revolutions to remove any particles adhering to the
external surIace oI the screen. A sight Ilow
indicator, Figure 1-3, in the Ilushing line should be
observed to ensure the Ilow is now clear. The Ilush
valve may then be closed. The diIIerential pressure
across the strainer should be observed. II the
diIIerential pressure still exceeds 4 PSI, another
manual cleaning cycle is required.

For the SA and DA Type (automatic) System: II the
pressure diIIerential exceeds 4 PSI, the high pressure
switch sends a signal to the controller which opens
the overboard discharge valve(s) and energizes the
strainer screen motor(s), to rotate the screen(s).
AIter a 15-second cleaning cycle, the strainer screen
motor(s) will stop, and the discharge valve(s) will
close. The strainer screen motor(s) will remain idle
and the discharge valve(s) will remain closed until
the next cleaning cycle.

2-1. INSTALLATION

2-2. Installation Prerequisites: The Iollowing
procedures must be accomplished prior to strainer
installation.

a. Check cleanliness oI the unit. Ensure that
the unit is clean and Iree oI all wrapping
and packing material. Special attention
should be given to bores oI inlet, outlet,
and Ilushing connection Ilanges.

NOTE

A diIIerential pressure gauge must be
installed to monitor the pressure
diIIerential between the inlet and outlet.

b. Ensure water Ilow through the strainer is
in the direction oI the Ilow arrow on the
strainer body. The open end oI the
screen(s) should be visible through the
strainer outlet.

2-3. Strainer Positioning: Position the strainer as
Iollows:

NOTE
Type AH strainers must be installed with
the input Ilow entering downward, Irom
the top, and exiting to the side, with the
Ilushing connection on the bottom.

Type DA and DH strainers can be
installed in the vertical up-Ilow position,
or in the horizontal position with both
screens in the horizontal plane, and the
Ilushing connection must be on the bottom
or the side.

Type SA and SH strainers can be installed
in the vertical up-Ilow position; however,
the preIerred position is horizontal with
the Ilow position and screen in the vertical
plane, and the Ilushing connection on the
bottom.

a. Position the connecting Ilanges as close as
practical and parallel to the strainer.

b. Align all Ilange bolt holes so that Iasteners
can be inserted by hand without using pry
bars, chain hoists, or similar mechanical
devices.

the Ilushing line cut-out valve. Continue
Ilushing strainer Ior approximately 1
minute to ensure all debris is Ilushed
overboard.

e. II the diIIerential pressure still exceeds 2
PSI, repeat steps a through d.

3-3. Automatic Cleaning Procedures (DA and SA
Type Strainers): When the diIIerential pressure
exceeds 4 PSI, the high pressure switch sends a
signal to controller which opens the discharge valve
and energizes the strainer screen motor(s) which will
rotate the screens Ior 15 seconds.

a. The debris Ialls into the bottom oI the
strainer assembly and is discharged out the
drain connection.

b. AIter the 15-second cleaning cycle, the
strainer screen motor(s) will stop, and the
discharge valve(s) close(s). The strainer
screen motor(s) will remain idle and the
discharge valve(s) will remain closed until

5-1. GENERAL INFORMATION.

5-2. Operation: The Control Panel controls the
automatic operations oI the SelI-Cleaning Strainers
Types SA and DA. The Control Panel and system
components are powered via a 460 VAC electrical
power source. These two SelI-Cleaning Strainer
systems have two modes oI operation that are
selected and controlled at the Control Panel. The
modes oI operation are HAND 1 or HAND 2
(manual) and AUTO (automatic), and are selected
by the operator at the control panel enclosure, Figure
5-1. The control panel employs a system oI timers
that control the operation oI the strainer screen
motor(s) and system-discharging valve(s). Figure 5-
2 provides a schematic diagram oI the control panel.

5-3. Manual Operation: In the HAND 1 or HAND
2 mode (manual operation), the SelI-Cleaning
Strainer System timers will be disabled. The strainer
screen motor(s) will rotate the screen(s) and the
discharge valve(s) will remain open until the
operator shiIts the selector switch to the OFF or
AUTO position at the control panel.

5-4. Automatic Operation. In the AUTO mode oI
operation, the system timers control the operation oI
the SelI-Cleaning Strainer System. The SelI-
Cleaning Strainer System incorporates three timers
that Iunction to energize the strainer screen motor(s)
and to cycle the discharge valve(s).

Timers:

TR1 - Designated as the 'Cleaning Cycle Duration
timer, it controls the amount oI time the strainer
screen motor(s) will rotate the screens and amount oI
time the drain valve(s) will remain open during a
cleaning cycle. The duration oI the automatic
cleaning cycle is typically 15 seconds.

TR2 - The 'Wait timer will delay the start oI
another automatic cleaning cycle Ior approximately
45 seconds aIter a previous automatic cleaning cycle
stops.

TR3 - The 'Cleaning Interval timer initiates an
automatic cleaning cycle at selectable time intervals
Irom a Iew minutes to many hours. Intervals Irom
30 minutes to 24 hours are typical.

would be terminals 2 & 3 BUT always
check the wiring diagram that was
supplied with the actuator).

6-10. DESCRIPTION (WORCESTER)

Worcester Controls Series 75 actuators are
reversible quarter-turn valve actuators. Standard
units can provide up to 3000 in. lbs. OI torque and
have a capacitor-start, capacitor-run motor and
permanently lubricated gear trains. These actuators
are quipped with integral thermal overload
protection (AC motors only) with automatic reset
and internal adjustable limit switches. In the event oI
electrical power Iailure, W, X, and Z models Ieature
manual override capabilities.

@#2*0*8!

Series 75 actuators are electro-
mechanical devises subject to normal
wear and tear. Actuator liIe is
dependent upon application and
environmental conditions. II applied in
hazardous services, such as but not
limited to, media temperature extremes,
toxins, Ilammables, or other services
where improper or incomplete operation
could produce a saIety hazard, it is
incumbent upon the system engineer and
user to provide proper warning devices
such as temperature sensors, oxygen
sensors, and Ilow sensors at elevated
temperatures the duty cycle has to be
de-rated, consult Iactory. Worcester
also recommends that the auxiliary limit
switches be used Ior monitoring and/or
electrical interlock, heater with
thermostats as well as drain/breather
Iitting (v53 option) are recommended
Ior humid environments when moisture
may condense inside the housing.
Please note that weatherprooI enclosures
will 'breathe over time and
condensation within the housing will
result.

S6437-BJ-MMC-010

)#1"0'*!

For actuators with dual DC motor
module, Iailure oI one motor may
mechanically damage the gear train.

)#1"0'*!

For pre-installation storage, Worcester
recommends that all products which
must be stored prior to installation be
stored indoors, in an environment
suitable Ior human occupancy. Do not
store products in areas where exposure
to relative humidity above 85, acid or
alkali Iumes, radiation above normal
background, ultraviolet light, or
temperatures above 120 degrees F or
below 40 degrees F may occur. Do not
store within 50 Ieet oI any source oI
