2D/ Sangam Vihar C Block CM/PM Mansi Dat 9/8/11 Pratibha Vidyalaya : e: FIVE-STEP LESSON PLAN KEY POINTS & Pre Requisite Knowledge Why: This is an extension in their understanding of how numbers are made to develop a concrete number sense. It will help them in understanding and manipulating numbers while working with them during different operations. What: Expanded form: When something is broken into its parts and then shown as an addition of all the parts, we call it an expanded form.

How: Write the place for every digit in a number. On the other side of the '=' sign write the value of the digit in the highest (Tens) place Add the value of the digit in the next highest (Units) place INDEPENDENT PRACTICE (__7__ min.) Write the numbers in expanded form: a) 45 = _____ + _____ b) 17 = _____ + _____ c) 84 = _____ + _____ d) 22 = _____ + _____ e) 50 = _____ + _____ GUIDED PRACTICE (__10__ min.) Students will attempt the questions on their own with opportunity for approaching their buddy or Bhaiyya to clarify their doubts. I will primarily move around addressing concerns with students who initially had difficulty with the place values concept. Write the numbers in expanded form: a) 67 = _____ + _____ b) 44 = _____ + _____ c) 56 = _____ + _____ d) 13 = _____ + _____ e) 30 = _____ + _____ INTRODUCTION OF NEW MATERIAL (__10__ min.)

Before we start, let's see if you remember a few things. In the number 45, what are the places of 5 and 4? What are their place values? Okay, great! Write the plus sign on the board. What does this mean? Plus, add, 'jodna'. When I add two numbers, what am I doing? I am mixing the two numbers and making one number. Okay.

So now, lets look at 45 again. Make a visual representation of 45. Write the tens portion as 40 and units as 5. Now what is happening here? We have 40 and 5. Both come together to make 45. Right? Now if I write 40+5, what do you think it means? It means I am adding/mixing 40 and 5. And what do I get add them? 45. So now, I can write 45 = 40+5. Are both the sides same? Great. This '40+5' is called the expanded form of 45. 45 is made of two parts - 4 Tens (40) and 5 Units (5). So I am writing 45 as an addition of 40 and 5 which is the expanded form. Let's look at another number. Repeat the same steps. Emphasize the term expanded form.

Okay, so if Bhaiyya gives you a number and asks you to write the expanded form, how will you do it? You will first write the places on the digits in the number. Then on the other side of the = sign, first write the value of the digit in Tens place. Then add the value of the digit in the units place to it to get the expanded form. Let's take 37. CFU the three steps with this example. Model 94 reiterating the steps. Move to GP.

OPENING (__3___ min.) What do we study in Maths? 'Numbers' And why do we use numbers? 'For counting'. Okay, lets say I give you a number. 45. What can you do with it? You can write the places. Yes? You can write the place values. Yes? Okay, what else? Can you draw the number and show it to me? 'Yes.' Today, just like drawing, we will learn another way of showing a number. It is very simple but it will help you understand numbers much better. CLOSING (__ min.)
