I Read the following texts carefully, and complete the tasks you are given on each of them, using your own words as far as possible. TEXT 1 The Lincoln Memorial served as the backdrop for some of the most memorable moments in the struggle for African-American civil-rights. In 1963, more than 200,000 people flocked to the nations capital, calling for the passage of a federal civil-rights bill. Carrying signs and placards, singing songs of freedom, they marched from the 5 Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. At the Lincoln Memorial, the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Delivered a heart-felt speech. I have a dream, he proclaimed, that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. King broke onto the national civil rights scene in 1955 as the organizer of the bus 10 boycott in Alabama. Rosa Parks provided the catalyst for the demonstration when she refused to give her seat up to a white passenger. Parks courage combined with kings leadership, sparked a boycott that would eventually change the nation. Kings civil rights movement reached its zenith between 1960 and 1965, when legislation was passed to end racial segregation in public facilities and expanding voting 15 rights. Kings finest moment may have come at an inter-racial assembly at the Lincoln Memorial, in 1963, when he called out, Let freedom ring. Just one year after this landmark speech, King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. King often said that he never wanted people to talk about his Nobel Peace Prize and other accomplishments. Rather, he said, he wanted to be remembered as a drum major 20 in the struggle for justice, peace and righteousness for all people. Over time, King expanded his mission to include other issues than racism and he began to speak out against the Vietnam war and poverty.
