Greetings in Jesus name, I was wandering around our beautiful little community here in Little Valley, NY this spring day and I saw all of these neat and tidy boxes for gardens. Inside each one, people have planted their favorite variety of flowers and vegetables. The time required to establish these gardens does seem to be quite tedious and or time consuming initially. One has to build the boxes and lay them out just right. In the long term I don't think it would be as much as tilling the ground and establishing a more traditional garden in the ground year after year. They also appear to be a creative way to bring the country to the village and also add a modern twist as to what that looks like. I have seen them with lots of different tiers and platforms and quite a variety of shapes and sizes also. Whether they are raised beds or in the ground gardens, people all around have spent a lot of time preparing these crops for harvest. The raised beds seems to be a little easier on the body in terms of long term maintenance.....no need to bend all the way to the ground and all. The love for gardening seems to be worth it in the long run to many people. For some it seems to be a therapeutic way of getting away from the humdrum of life and renewing ones soul. For others a form of exercise. And yet for others a way of life. Whatever the reason even if it is as simple as just enjoying gardening, people all around are doing it. This Memorial Day weekend seems to have people scrambling to get the finishing touches on their masterpieces. The underlying theme with gardens no matter how big or small is that they require work in some form. If they are going to grow and produce good fruit they require continual work in all types of forms. Sometimes they need water, at others they may need some weeding or those weeds can choke out the good fruit. Still, at other times they need fertilizer to help them grow larger fruit. Gardens require work to produce anything worth while. Our relationship with Christ is very similar to that of a garden in that it requires work. Paul urges believers in Philippians 2:12 to work out their salvation. Not at all implying that we work for salvation, but rather once we have received Gods grace we are to work at perfecting it. We need to work out what has already been done inside us in order for it to bear fruit. Our relationship with Jesus can only grow if we work at it. Just like the gardening that is going on quite possibly as we speak, start cultivating the soil in your heart. Even the best of gardens need work, and the best of gardeners recognize areas that need attention in their garden. So this spring as you are working out your garden, also work out your salvation. In the words of Ken Davis, Lighten up and live; allow this relationship with Jesus to be as fulfilling as he has designed it. A little bit of work is going to yield a massive crop!! Until next month, Pastor Joe I am always open to dialogue about anything that might touch your hearts.....my email is pastorjoe@littlevalleyumc.org

COMPOSTING
You may have noticed a small black dome recently appearing in the vicinity of our raised bed community garden. It is a composter that was donated courtesy of Cornell Cooperative Extension. Composting is not rocket science, but there are a few simple guidelines that will help it work more efficiently. What To Compost Your Earth Machine will work best if it is fed a diet of green (nitrogen-rich) and brown (carbon-rich) materials. Check out the list of kitchen and yard waste greens and browns that will keep your Earth Machine happy. KITCHEN GREENS Fruit scraps, vegetable scraps Houseplant cuttings Coffee grounds Rice & pasta Egg shells Tea bags KITCHEN BROWNS Coffee filters, stale bread Paper napkins & towels Dryer lint Hair
Shredded office paper Shredded newspaper YARD BROWNS YARD GREENS Flowers Leaves Straw or hay Vegetables Small twigs/chips Plant trimmings Dried grass and weeds Hedge clippings Grass (small amounts) DO NOT COMPOST Meat, Fish, Bones Dairy Products Oils or Fats Sauces Pet Waste Mature Weeds With Seeds With a little TLC in the form of a healthy diet, frequent turning and watering the composter will produce natural fertilizer for use on the garden or lawn.
Missions
The chicken BBQ last week was absolutely wonderful. Thanks to all who helped prepare food, served and worked it. The setting was perfect. Good weather, fun fellowship and our beautiful sounding praise band filled the air with lots of music. We served 420 Chiavettas chicken halves and the youth sold drinks for camping scholarships and did quite well themselves. We can hardly wait until next year. Dont forget the missions team is going on the road August 12th through the 18th when we head for Chillicothe, Ohio. While we are there we will do some repairs on a house, visit & minister to a homeless community & lots more. We will picnic, swim, have lots of fun & maybe even have a concert. If you are interested in going or if you cant go but would like to help us get there see Randy Peters or Pastor Joe very soon.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ in accordance with his pleasure and will to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of Gods grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. Ephesians 1:3-8
