GLOBAL FOOD TRACEABILITY MARKET TO REACH $10.7 BILLION IN 2016 Wellesley, Mass.

According to a new technical market research report, FOOD TRACEABILITY: TECHNOLOGIES AND GLOBAL MARKETS (FOD045A) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for food traceability was valued at $7 billion in 2011 and is expected to increase to $10.7 billion in 2016, a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.9%. The global market for food traceability can be separated into five segments: barcode, RFID/RTLS, biometrics, GPS, and infrared. The barcode segment accounted for $6 billion in 2011 and is expected to increase at a CAGR of 6.4% to reach $8.2 billion in 2016. The RFID/RTLS segment was valued at $782 million in 2011 and is expected to increase at a CAGR of 21.7% to reach nearly $2.1 billion in 2016. In 2011, the biometrics segment was worth $101.3 million, and in 2016, that value should reach $231 million, a CAGR of 17.9%. The GPS segment, worth $55 million in 2011, should reach nearly $106 million in 2016, a CAGR of 13.9%. The infrared segment totaled nearly $40 million in 2011. By 2016, that value should be nearly $69 million, a CAGR of 11.5%. Traceability refers to the ability to track food products at every point in the supply chain and provide information that ensures quality. Biological and food-borne diseases are a key threat to public safety. Food safety concerns have human, social, economic, and political implications and costs. These costs are multiplied by husbandry practices that can potentially increase the numbers of pathogens, including zoonotic pathogens, in meat and dairy food that produce, antibioticresistant bacteria; unsafe agricultural and farming practices that use manure, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides; possible contamination of water that is used for fresh produce; the progressive influence of time delays and temperature variations on global distribution chains for seafood, meat, and fresh produce; the threat of contamination in processed food by bacteria, viruses, mold, and mycotoxins; and the increasing threat of bioterrorism and presence of foreign objects that can cause injury.

This report will be most useful to the security solution industry, more specifically: equipment manufacturers, distributors and vendors of food traceability solutions; software developers; consultants; technology and system integrators of food traceability technologies; food retailers and end users; and sensor companies. Regulatory bodies, government agencies, research-oriented agencies, and financial analyst communities may also find the report beneficial.
