Name : Riana Yusuf Class :Linguistic-C Commentary on Non-Fiction Course (Prose III) Non-fiction is the subject in English literature

department in 6th semester of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. This subject can be followed only if having passed subject of prose I & II. I am, as the student of BSI must take this subject or this course to support my insight of literature of English. In the prose I & II I studied a lot of short story and novel. Since at the time I make prose identical with literature or sastrain Bahasa Indonesia. Because of that I also make it same as fiction. But after I studied non-fiction in 6sth semester I realize that literature in English or western perspective rather different with sastra in Indonesia. Mr. Pepen as the lecture of prose I,II& III or non-fiction, taught us more not only about prose but also more about literature in western perspective. In the first meeting, at the time I still remember that Mr. Pepen said he preferred call it as non-fiction to essay. Because essay can make some ambiguity in its interpretation, I have heard that essay can be divided become two kind. Those are the formal and informal one. By the time goes the complexity of essay increases because there are some kinds of definition about essay. I feel that my insight broader about English literature after I have studied non-fiction. Non-fiction shows a lot of kind of essay writing in western tradition. It is very different with essay in Indonesia. During about 16 meeting in this subject, I know more the essence and the form of essay in English literature. My confusion about what literature is in western perspective finally little by little can be erased after I convey essay in English literature. I think this subject is important to study in English literature department. It can help its student to understand more about literature especially about essay in western tradition. It can open understanding about essay and literature that kinds of

essay in English literature is different with those in Indonesia. From its form essay in English literature more variety and interesting. They are philosophy, chronicle, almanac, scientific, etc. at the first time I got it difficult to convey them but after getting used with this subject through some discussion and explanation in the class I could understand it. There is something changing of my perspective about essay and English literature after passing this subject. I realize that essay not always in form of essay like what I understood before. Beside of its subject that interesting the class also the method and the lecture that always gives us as the student to explore our own understanding about the subject current discussed. Frequently our discussion was out of the core of the subject. It happened because what we have misunderstanding about the subject not like what lecture expected. But I see that as the process of learning in the class, to build up our intellectual and mental. Then, in my opinion, there is no something to be regretted about that except we must make it as moment to make better discussion in future. I think the discussion during the course in the class is good. This method is more effective for student to explore and elaborate their understanding and to build up their mental to speak in front of class. During the discussion, I feel that the lecture has done his job to watch out the student. The lecture did not more interfere to student discussion. It was good to make student freer to speak out their mind. We could share our mind as the student freer, then there is no burden for us to feel afraid to make mistake. I think it could happen because the lecturer more treats the student as his friends. It is good to make student more comfortable and confident due to not feel afraid to watch during discussion. Then after the student has done their discussion, the lecturer continues his job to review and to make some clarifications about the material or subject that being discussed. It is good to make it clear what we have discussed. I think the explanation from the lecturer somehow deeper and clearer making us more understand.

Over all, I sum up student of English literature department should learn this course, non-fiction. This subject is very important to study to broader insight about English literature. During following this, course many impressions that I got beside the science about literature. Every meeting in this subject was impressed for me. Since the first meeting until the last meeting by the time to final exam, this class always makes me trigged to study more and more. The method that used is effective and close to its aim as the process of learning in the class. Although many error like what I said before, but it does not decrease us to learn it more to make it better in the future. The lecturer and students themselves can accept the mistakes during the discussion always as the process of learning. Somehow in English literature department students are demanded to understand English literature. But for me it is not to accept entirely what we have learned from western perspective, in my opinion as the students we should be able to criticize western tradition in science of English literature. Yes, we could more know western civilization and its culture that appear in every essay or others kind of literature. It is very important for us in conveying English literature or non-fiction to take its good and stay away from its bad for our culture. As Muslim and as the student of UIN we must have different perspective from other college in understanding English literature. As the student of English literature department in Islamic State University, we are not only demanded to convey or to understand and explore the English literature from western perspective. In addition, we must have our own perspective like what I said, as the Muslim, we have tenet that become our foundation to convey many kind of science and civilization. We learn English literature not for imitating it entirely but to strengthen our culture as Muslim scholar in humanities science especially in literature.
