Connecting a Heat Flow Transducer

Introduction
The heat flow transducer is designed to measure heat flow in soils. The thermopile is encasulated in high
thermal conductivity epoxy to prevent ground potential pickup.
How do I connect a heat flow transducer to the Data Dolphin?
A heat flow transducer needs no special signal conditioning to connect to the Data
Dolphin. Simply connect the black or positive wire to a precision input terminal on the
Data Dolphin, and the white or ground wire to an analog common ground terminal.
The precision inputs on the Data Dolphin DD-SE are inputs 11 to 18.
How do I configure a Data Dolphin input?
Once you have ensured that the heat flow transducer is wired correctly to the Data
Dolphin, you will want to enable and configure the inputs that the transducer is
connected to by using the Data Dolphin software. As an example, precision input 11
has been correctly configured to read the output from a heat flow transducer in the
figure below. Note that the input was first enabled by checking the “On” checkbox.

Choose “Linear Equation” as the scaling type. Once you have chosen this type of scaling, you will be
required to enter a slope (m). Heat flow is computed from the thermopile voltage (Vt ) by the formula:

HF(W/m 2) = Vt (mV) * calibration factor

Given this, the slope is calculated by multiplying the nominal

calibration factor of the heat flow transducer, in units of Wm-2mV-1,
by a factor of 1000. For example, the output of a transducer with
nominal calibration factor of 40 Wm-2mV-1 would be properly scaled
by the Data Dolphin software by entering a value of 40000 into the
slope textbox. Leave the offset value (b) at its default of zero.
Once you have entered correct settings for the input, be sure to
click on the “Apply” button to enter the settings into the Data
Dolphin’s memory.
