JAMO

The story of Jamo begins in the Danish fishing village of Glyngre. The year is 1966, and Preben Jacobsen, a carpenter, decides to start building loudspeakers in his little henhouse. He has a passion for good craftsmanship and fine sound, and produces superbly designed loudspeakers with the aid of the latest acoustic technologies. However, he is somewhat less talented at selling so his brother-inlaw, Julius Mortensen, enters the picture in 1968, bringing with him his export experience, gained in the fishing industry. Jacobsen and Mortensen: Jamo. The stage is set for an adventure to begin.

O U R H I S T O R Y
In the years since then, Jacobsen's little henhouse has grown to become a 30,000m2 / 300.000 sq.ft state-of-the-art factory while Jamo is now Europe's biggest manufacturer of loudspeakers. At the same time, customer demands have become more individual and challenging. Which is lucky for us because developing new solutions is a daily source of inspiration in our work. Much has changed, but the soul and the driving force behind Jamo is still the same: we want to develop and build products that make a difference to people's lives, that connect on an emotional level.

Magnesium cone Designing a loudspeaker cone involves striking an optimal balance between stiffness and low weight. The stiffer the cone, the more effective the bass becomes. And the lighter the cone, the more dynamic reproduction becomes. Magnesium combines stiffness and low weight, resulting in highly effective and dynamic reproduction. XBR With the unique Jamo XBR (eXtended Bass Response) feature, the surround loudspeaker functions as a dipole in the treble and midrange, and as a bipole in the lowest bass, providing the diffuse surround reproduction of traditional dipole loudspeakers, but with full bass reproduction. Design Cabinet The NCC (Non-Coloration Compound) front is a special construction of sand and a resonance-reducing binding agent that is produced under high pressure, embedding the individual grains of sand in the binding agent. This construction prevents loudspeaker vibrations being transmitted to the cabinet, or from drive unit to drive unit, and provides increased detail and better-defined bass. This technique also allows designs that would not be possible with conventional materials, thus optimizing visual appearance as well as acoustic properties. The cabinet is crafted in massive 25 mm / 1 thick MDF board and finished with lacquered, genuine wood veneer that ensures optimal acoustic properties and a high-class appearance.

Copper centre plug The massive copper centre plug of the magnesium loudspeaker cone replaces the traditional dust cap, making the cone lighter and faster, and preventing any possibility of sonic break-up. It also prevents pressure-swings behind the dust cap when the cone moves, enabling more dynamic and precise sound reproduction. The copper centre plug also cools the voice coil, providing greater power-handling capability and very stable sound reproduction no matter how high you turn the volume.

Time msec. With MFB

MFB (Motional feedback) When a large woofer has been abruptly driven by a strong sonic impulse such as an explosion or a timpani, the woofer continues moving after the impulse stops. The MFB circuit compares the impulse to be reproduced with the actual movement of the woofer. If the woofer moves unnaturally in relation to the input signal, the MFB circuit corrects the error before it becomes audible. Furthermore, the MFB makes it possible to equalize the subwoofer to go deeper without losing any precision. The result is incredibly accurate, deep bass, full of punch and dynamics.

Alu Centre plug The aluminium centre plug replaces the traditional dust cap, making the cone lighter and faster. This also prevents sonic break-up as well as pressure swings behind the dust cap as the cone moves, resulting in more dynamic and precise sound reproduction. The aluminium centre plug cools the voice coil, providing increased power-handling capability and stable sound reproduction no matter how loud you play.

Design The flat horizontal design (only 15 cm/6 in deep) makes it very easy to integrate a real high-performance cinema system into a living room. Despite its compact dimensions, the D 6SUB features a massive 15 woofer that delivers thunderous bass all the way down to 28 Hz.

Down-firing woofer This unique feature minimizes one of the major barriers to good sound reproduction. To avoid boomy bass reproduction, loudspeakers must normally be placed well away from the wall often impractical in many living rooms. When a woofer fires downwards it couples with the floor, making placement less critical. In other words, this speaker can be placed close to the wall. Cabinet The D 5 design offers a cabinet that is larger than it looks, while the arched shape also dampens standing waves. The cabinet sides are of a unique sandwich structure, consisting of an MDF board with longitudinal grooves and a fibre board. Extremely rigid, the cabinet features internal bracing that makes it sonically inert and prevents unwanted vibrations from colouring the sound. DAppolitto configuration The symmetrical configuration of two midranges and a tweeter controls the sound dispersion, i.e. wider horizontal dispersion makes the listening position less critical, while higher vertical focusing results in fewer reflections from floor and ceiling. Design Elegant, ellipse-shaped design gives the D 570 and D 590 a distinctive sculptured appearance, while ensuring minimum reflection and inert cabinets. The cabinet shape also provides an optimal environment for the down-firing woofer, enabling it to reproduce even the lowest frequencies from, e.g., a cathedral organ.

Wood-fibre cone This unique new wood-fibre cone design features uneven fibres with different resonance frequencies. When pressed into shape to form a loudspeaker cone, these fibres prevent each other from vibrating. To fine-tune rigidity and internal damping, the cone is coated on the back and lacquered on the front. The result is a very rigid cone with well-controlled break-up modes that provide extremely low distortion throughout, as well as an open and detailed midrange for optimal voice reproduction.

Among other benefits, this extends the frequency range from a very low 1kHz, allowing a smooth and seamless transition with the midrange, and then all the way up to 40kHz, making it compatible with new digital multi-channel sound formats. The voice coil is copper-plated aluminium wire, combining the low weight of aluminium with the superior conducting qualities of copper, and making magnetic oil for cooling and resonance damping unnecessary.

Double Curved Front baffle The most rigid construction of all is a round shape. Cut from a giant ball, the Double Curved front baffle of the D 4 is a foamed ABS shell mounted on an MDF board. Both materials have excellent acoustic properties that provide high internal damping, while preventing vibrations from travelling from one driver to another. The planar design also provides optimal working conditions for the asymmetrically placed tweeter. Due to the asymmetrical design, no distances from cabinet top and sides to the tweeter are identical, and thus edge reflections do not accumulate. The result is a crystal-clear treble reproduction that is essential for conveying from the extended treble content of new multi-channel sound formats.

Design Form follows function and elegance combined with technology are the keywords for D 4. The slimline design and choice of finishes makes it easy to integrate these speakers in any home. With its flat-profile design and highend reproduction quality, the D 400 is the perfect match for any flat screen.

Mineral/paper cone Due to its light weight, paper has always been an excellent material for loudspeaker cones. To obtain a stiff cone with optimal internal damping, the paper is reinforced with mineral fibres. The increased rigidity makes flat, exponential cone design possible, allowing the woofer to cover a wide frequency range and thus enable a very smooth transition with the tweeter. The result is a very precise quality of sound reproduction.

Subwoofer amplifier The powerful E 8SUB amplifiers use state-of-the-art SMD technology. The advantages are short signal paths and electronics that are much more resistant to shocks and vibrations that arise inside a subwoofer. The result is better sound and a more durable subwoofer. As an additional convenience feature, the subwoofer switches on and off automatically whenever it receives a signal from the A/V receiver.

MPD (Midrange Phase Diffusion) This unique Jamo technology incorporates a midrange unit in opposite phase with a twoway system on the other side of the surround loudspeaker. This provides the diffuse surround reproduction typical of dipole loudspeakers, yet still gives the full bass reproduction that such designs have traditionally lacked.

Neodymium Dome Tweeter Neodymium is a powerful magnetic material 10 times more powerful than a normal magnet. Because the magnet can be reduced in size, it can be placed inside the voice coil of the loudspeaker unit, allowing the magnetic force to be concentrated around the voice coil exactly where it is needed. MIR (Magnetic Interference Reduction) E 530, 550 and 570 This feature reduces magnetic radiation from the loudspeakers, making it possible to place them close to a TV without distorting the picture tube. This is done by adding an extra magnet to the woofer, which also increases sensitivity and thus delivers higher sound pressure levels for the same amount of amplifier power. The E 500, E 5CEN.2 and E 5CEN.5 are all magnetically shielded.

Low-loss X-over. E 500, E 5CEN.2 At Jamo, we design all our loudspeaker units in-house. This means we can create individual drive units for specific purposes that complement each other perfectly, thus reducing the need for complex crossover filters with various compensation circuits. Limiting the number of components in the filter also reduces its power consumption (a complex filter can easily consume 10 20% of the power supplied) The advantage of low-loss x-overs is clearer, cleaner sound reproduction, as well as lower distortion and higher sensitivity. Low-cut X-over Just as small organ pipes cannot play deep bass, small speakers find it difficult to reach the lowest notes. Instead of overloading small speakers with bass signals that are beyond their ability to reproduce, the low-cut bass filter prevents the deepest bass from reaching the speakers. This protects the loudspeaker against overload, while also enabling a cleaner, more detailed reproduction of midrange and treble frequencies. Electronic overload protection An electronic PTC resistor limits power to the loudspeaker if it becomes overloaded. When the volume is turned down again, the resistor cools down and the sound is restored to its normal level.

Subwoofer configuration E 5SUB.5 Normally subwoofers feature bass reflex ports to extend bass response. However, at high sound pressure levels, port noise will often occur due to the extremely high airflow through the port. E 5SUB.5 features a powerful 8 long-throw woofer and an 8 passive radiator. The passive radiator eliminates all port noise, providing clean, deep and thunderous bass from the two frontfiring drivers. Design The classical, sturdy wood cabinets in the E 5 series come in three finishes that blend easily with any interior design. The mounting rings ensure that the drivers are elegantly and firmly attached to the cabinet. Also, the tweeter mounting ring features a slight horn loading of the tweeter. This extends the driver's frequency response and thus ensures a seamless transition with the other loudspeaker units.

Cable management is achieved in an elegant fashion by using an attractive silver-shielded cable to supply the audio signal to the speaker and simultaneously stabilize the aluminium profile.

Electronic overload protection The electronic PTC resistor limits power to the loudspeaker if it becomes overloaded. When the volume is turned down again, the resistor cools down and the sound is restored to its normal level.

Since bass frequencies are not directional, a subwoofer can be placed almost anywhere. The 4SUBs design opens up a world of positioning possibilities: standing or lying on the floor, hanging on the wall or hidden underneath a sofa.

Two-way system, A 410 Despite the small size of the satellite speaker it features a twoway system a woofer and a tweeter - that reproduces the midand upper range frequencies with full fidelity. The result is a very natural sounding vocal quality.

Design The lean, curvaceous and compact design of the A 410 harmonizes with the adjustable bracket which allows placement almost anywhere on a bookshelf, on a wall, in a corner or even on the ceiling.

This protects the loudspeaker against overload, while also enabling a cleaner, more detailed reproduction of midrange and treble frequencies

Who's in charge of developing new products at Jamo? On the face of it we'd point to our team of innovative acoustic, electronic and construction engineers; nonetheless, it is first and foremost our customers who determine the direction of our product development. That's because we have promised to create sound solutions that truly make a difference. Design is an equally important element in that mix. For this reason, Jamo collaborates closely with creative and quality-conscious product visualisers, such as the prize-winning design team of Smedegaard & Weiss. This Danish duo have won numerous international accolades for their ability to combine technical quality with an intuitive feel for the customer's needs and the situation in which the products will be used. Smedegaard & Weiss establish a clear relationship between the product's interior and exterior, and have contributed to many of Jamo's innovative designs.

Neodymium loudspeaker units Neodymium is a powerful magnetic material 10 times more powerful than a normal magnet. Because the magnet can be reduced in size, it can be placed inside the voice coil of the loudspeaker unit, allowing the magnetic force to be concentrated around the voice coil exactly where it is needed. Another benefit of the compact magnet is that is does not take up space inside the speaker cabinet, an especially important consideration with miniature speakers like the A 3. 2-/21/2 - way system Despite the small size of the satellite speakers they feature 2- and 21/2 - way systems one or two woofers and a tweeter- that reproduce the mid- and upper range frequencies with full fidelity. The result is a very natural sounding vocal quality. Subwoofer configuration Subwoofers normally have bass reflex ports to extend the bass. However, the flat, compact A 3SUB.5 features a passive radiator inconspicously incorporated in the configuration, thus totally eliminating port noise. Electronic overload protection The electronic PTC resistor limits power to the loudspeaker if it becomes overloaded. When the volume is turned down again, the resistor cools down and the sound is restored to its normal level. Design The new A 3 speakers are an attractive complement to any flat screen display, whether mounted on their stands or on the wall. Removing the front grills (except from A 305) gives the speakers a modern contemporary look; left on, the speakers become classically discreet. Subwoofer operation (A 3SUB.5) The true challenge for a subwoofer is to accommodate personal preferences in any room, with any speakers. The A 3SUB.5 features easily accessible adjustment controls located on the front of the subwoofer, allowing instant adjustment of the bass level, phase and frequency range of the subwoofer to match the placement and size of the front speakers. Accessories A 305, A 325, A 355FS When the A 305, 325 and 355 are placed on the custom-made stands we've designed for them, they look less like speakers and more like sculptures. Even better, the speaker cables are wholly concealed within the stand.

Integrated dome (A 325, A 355, A 3CEN.5) Total integration of the concave-shaped front baffle and the inverted neodymium dome ensures optimum dispersion characteristics. What's more, the completely smooth integration virtually eradicates edge reflections, resulting in clear, uncoloured treble reproduction.

Multi-functional wall bracket (included) Mount the bracket horizontally or vertically with just two screws, then 'click' on the speaker. Because the bracket also conceals the speaker terminals it can make speaker cables totally invisible if they come out of the wall. In addition, the bracket for A 325, A 355 and A 3CEN.5 allows the speaker to be angled at up to 30 degrees from the horizontal, allowing the sound to be aimed precisely at the listening position.

Mix n match The new A 3 comes in small, medium or large, making it possible to mix n match A 3 speakers to suit your exact purposes, yet have speakers that still complement each other sonically and visually.

UNRIVALLED TECHNOLOGY

DVR 50
T H E E N G I N E E R S FAVO U R I T E D E TA I L S
Radio The radio tuner features 30 AM/FM presets and supports RDS where available. (Europe) Full digital amplifier Eliminates quality-sapping D/A and A/D conversion and thus keeps all signal processing in the digital domain, maintaining the absolute highest level of sound quality. Because the full digital open-loop (non-feedback) amplifier is integrated with the DVD player, the same master clock controls both. The advantage is extremely low jitter, improving sonic imaging, transparency and minimising distortion. Formats The DVD drive of Jamo DVR 50 accepts practically any optical medium available on the market today, from normal CDs to CD-R/RW as well as the latest DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs.

Progressive scan A brand new feature, the component video outputs of Jamo DVR 50 support progressive scan on both NTSC (USA ) and PAL (Europe) video signals. Progressive scan gives much smoother and better defined picture quality, exploiting the full potential of the latest screen technologies. Acoustic match with the speakers The audio circuits of the Jamo DVR 50 are optimized to drive the Jamo A 2, A 3 and A 4 series speakers. For user convenience, three different sound modes enable simple changes to the tonal balance: a Neutral mode in which the sound is reproduced as it was recorded, a Jamo Reference mode that complements the A 2, A 3 and A 4 speakers perfectly, and a Dynamic mode that provides "extra kick" when the party needs to get rocking. Design The DVR 50 was designed with a distinctly Scandinavian look to match the new A 3 speakers, and visually harmonize with the A 2, A 4 and A 5 products. We think the result speaks for itself. Danish design ... manufactured in Denmark.

Easy set-up / operation Setting up the DVR 50 is easy. The factory default settings are based on our vast experience of what settings provide the best sound in most set-ups. However, it is also possible to go into a more advanced set-up menu to fine-tune the sound to personal preferences. The basics are all taken care of though: just follow the quick on-screen set-up guide where pictures prompt you to select a language, choose 16:9 or 4:3 picture format, and finally decide on the connection to be used between the DVR 50 and the TV.

Ergonomic Remote The remote control of the DVR 50 reflects Jamo's determination to make the unit simple and logical to operate in everyday use. For instance, there are dedicated buttons for functions that are used daily, organized for easy use. So the up/down volume buttons, for example, are easy to find in the darkness of a home theatre. For less frequently used functions, the user simply activates the list button for access to all the advanced features. Easy, simple ... the way it should be.

Accessories Jamo Audio Grade Silver cable 0.75 / 1.5

Formats from MP3 to JPEG (photo CDs) and the new DivX format are also supported. With DivX video compression format, a full movie can be played from just one CD-ROM, making DivX to movies what MP3 is to music. DTS, Dolby Digital and Dolby ProLogic II sound formats are also supported.

Day to day operation is equally logical: whether playing the radio, CD or DVD, the DVR 50 always selects the appropriate mode automatically.

Design Conventions occasionally need challenging. Who says a loudspeaker has to look like one? Like its matching subwoofer, the A 210 breaks with conventional loudspeaker design, inspired by the strength (and acoustically excellent) shape of an ostrich egg plus the surface of an American football. The A 210 cabinet is tough, yet smooth, elegant and a pleasure to touch.

Placing A 2SUB Since bass frequencies are not directional, a subwoofer can be placed almost anywhere, e.g. under a sofa. However, with its innovative and appealing design an A 2SUB cries out to be seen. A wall bracket is included to help make the A 2SUB a positive contribution to your interior design.

Side-firing woofer Mounting the woofer on the side of the cabinet provides full bass response despite the slim design. Depending on placement, it also enables different qualities of bass response. Placing the speakers with the two woofers facing each other results in natural bass reproduction, whereas placing the speakers with the woofers firing outwards into the corners of the room results in a stronger, more emphatic bass experience. And the closer the speakers are to the wall, the stronger the bass. Horn tweeter Depending on how the speakers are placed, the X 8 horn tweeter can be adjusted to suit personal preferences and match different bass levels. ARC (Anti Resonance Compound) This unique Jamo technology is a 28mm-thick sandwich construction of particle board, a plastic shell, and non-resonant damping material. It prevents vibrations being transmitted from the loudspeakers to the cabinet, and provides enhanced detail and better bass. This technique also allows us to create designs that would not be possible with conventional materials, thus optimizing the appearance as well as acoustic properties. Design X 8 features two speaker designs in one. Leave the grille on, and the speakers seem high-tech, yet still discreet and easy to fit into almost any home. To make a more aggressive statement, remove the grille and mount them using the accompanying yellow dcor brackets.

Horn tweeter The huge horn tweeter is the most conspicuous feature of X 5. Low-loss X-over At Jamo, we design all our loudspeaker units in-house. This means individual units for exact purposes and units that complement each other perfectly, thus reducing the need for complex crossover filters with various compensation circuits. Limiting the number of components in the filter also reduces Its power consumption (an overly complex filter can easily consume 10 - 20% of the power supplied). The advantage of lowloss x-overs is clearer, cleaner sound reproduction, as well as lower distortion and higher sensitivity.

J A M O P R O D U C T I O N
The first step in the construction process is to set up an advanced 3D computer model to provide a foundation for both further design work and the programming of the computer-controlled part of the production process. The actual production environment brings together some of the world's most advanced robot machines and a team of vastly experienced carpenters who take great pride in their craftsmanship. It is no coincidence that Jamo's headquarters lies in a region that is home to a large part of Denmark's worldrenowned furniture production industry. For Jamo, production and quality control are simply two sides of the same coin all the way from the control of raw materials to the painstaking final inspection of every single finished loudspeaker. That's your guarantee that the sound, finish, accessories, packaging in short, every aspect of a Jamo product will totally match your expectations.

This is based on market feedback, to ensure that we have a good sense of our customers' wishes and requirements. Jamo's innovative acoustic, electronic and mechanical engineers are responsible for product development but the development process is never concluded until our experienced panel of listeners has approved the new product.

Everything is first modelled in 3D computer software, to make it easier to check that the various components, wooden elements, etc., fit together. This also means that design optimisation is possible at a much earlier stage of the development process. Such advanced 3D applications, however, are no replacement for our experienced model carpenters, who then produce a perfect, fullsize prototype.

This begins with entry point checking, during which all of the raw materials are subjected to test sampling. Similarly, samples of all production components are tested during the production process. Then comes a final inspection of every product before it leaves the factory. Moreover, products are selected every week from the finished goods warehouse and subjected to an additional 100% quality check of their sound, finish, packaging, accessories etc.

This is fully automated and based on the latest technology. Everything is controlled by bar codes and computers right from the time that the orders are keyed into the system until they are delivered directly from Glyngre to outlets all over Europe. For overseas deliveries, Jamo makes use of its finished goods warehouses in Chicago and Shanghai.

What is it that you want to hear when you are listening to music? Nuances and subtle details? The complete, integrated acoustic image? Or plenty of punch and bass? Whatever you need, Jamo has just what you're looking for. All you need to do is choose between the three loudspeaker lines: Detail, All-round or Bass.

How large is the room in which the loudspeakers will be used? This is a very important consideration, because loudspeakers work by moving air. If the room is large, they have to move a lot of air, whereas if the room is small, the amount of air to be moved is correspondingly smaller. So it's a question of finding speakers that correctly match the space in which they will be used.

Loudspeakers for the connoisseur. A unique combination of advanced technology and classic Danish design at its very best. The materials and components have been selected with care, and we have paid particular attention to the assembly and finish. Every aspect right from the tiniest details to the completed product is in a class of its own. Detail Sound reproduces every nuance of the acoustic image, which is why it is recommended for lovers of classical music, jazz, opera and live recordings.

THE ROOM MAKES A DIFFERENCE

How much air do the speakers need to move, in order to fill a room with sound? To make the calculation easier, we assume that the average ceiling is three metres from the floor. We can then categorise the room on the basis of whether it is larger or smaller than 25 m2.

Spaces larger than 25m

In the case of a large living-room or a spacious room of any kind, the rule of thumb is simple: large rooms normally require large loudspeakers. However, Jamo also produces smaller speakers with sufficient power to fill a large space with sound. If you
