Course Description DFT 1205. Introduction to Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)/CATIA For Drafting & Design Technology students: Introduces the student to computer-aided drafting using CATIA V5 software. Explores basic constructions, dimensioning, editing and drawing manipulation functions. The student will be introduced to the four areas of drafting and will complete a mechanical plan. For Aviation Technology students: Using computer and CATIA V5 software, the student will explore basic constructions, dimensioning, editing, and drawing manipulation functions. The student will complete a variety of drawings that will develop the skills needed to complete part and assembly files. (5 lecture hours/special course fee) Course Structure Course curriculum design and projects are based on the courseware title for engineering software products CATIA: Introduction to Modeling provided by ASCENT-Center for Technical Knowledge, a division of RAND Worldwide. Overview An introduction to the class procedures and software is explained. Log-in, Attendance, and Assignment Submission Procedures Blueprints and Drawings Review Initiate the Software 1 Introduction to Modeling This section introduces an overview of CATIA fundamentals, working environment, and interface. Fundamentals Design Intent User Interface Working With Models Online Documentation Goals: Open a part model View the model from different orientations

Change the display settings for the model

2 Customizing CATIA V5 How to effectively manage files in the CATSetting folders are discussed along with how to customize the Options dialog box, toolbars and workbenches to suit individual preferences and requirements. Managing CATSetting Files Options Dialog box Toolbar Customization Favorite Workbenches Goals: Set up favorite workbenches Customize the on-screen toolbar display Customize the CATIA configuration 3 Creating Sketches This section teaches how to create new parts and sketching fundamentals. Get Started on Sketching Features Create a New Part Sketcher Workbench Get Started on Sketching Features Profile Sketching Sketcher Editing Operations Tips and Techniques Specification Tree Goals: Sketch a line, an arc, a rectangle, a circle and an elongated hole Trim overlapping shapes Use Profile Sketching to create lines and arcs 4 Constraining Sketches Constraints establish relationships between elements as well as define an elements size and location Introduction to Constraints Geometric Constraints Dimensional Constraints Edit Multi-Constraint Constraint Colors Sketch Analysis Goals: Create a sketched profile Create dimensions needed to fully define a sketch Recognize when a sketch is under constrained Recognize when a sketch is over constrained Apply a variety of constraints to document the design intent of the sketch

5 Pad & Shaft This subject introduces how to create and modify pad and shaft features which serve as the models foundation. Pad Features Shaft Features Goals: Create a sketch to create a Pad feature Modify a Pad feature Create a sketch to create a shaft feature Modify a shaft feature Use an existing sketch for several features 6 Sketcher Tools & Techniques This subject covers many useful tools that can help save time when designing and making changes. Positioned Sketch Copy and Import Sketch Geometry Projecting Geometry Editing Tools Automatically Generate Constraints Visualization Tools Goals: Project 3D geometry elements into a sketch Offset sketched elements Create and transform sketched elements Create base solid geometry Import a DXF file into Sketcher Create a positioned sketch Set the visualization of the sketch view Edit multi-constraints 7 Sketched Feature Techniques This section introduces additional options for pad features as well as the benefits of using reference elements when creating geometry. Additional Pad Features Reference Elements Goals: Create reference elements Create solid features using reference elements Properly sketch and constrain an open profile Use an open sketch to create a pad feature 8 Pocket & Groove Features The pocket and groove features are used similar to the pad and shaft features except that they remove instead of add material to a sketch, how and when to use these features is explained.

Pocket Features Groove Features Goals: Create a pocket feature Create a groove feature Locate revolved sketches to cylindrical geometry 9 Feature Management Tools used to simplify the display of the model are discussed along with how to quickly select groups of features at the same time. Search for Features Hide & Show Activate & Deactivate Create Selection Sets Goals: Simplify the model display using the Hide/Show commands Activate and deactivate features Create selection sets 10 Creating Dress up Features Introduced are three basic types of dress-up features, how to create these features as well as how to choose an appropriate reference edge for them. Fillet Feature Chamfer Feature Hole Feature Goals: Create a fillet feature using several edge selection methods Create and change chamfer features 11 Advanced Dress-Up Features How to create advanced dress-up features as well as how to choose appropriate references for them are described. Additional Fillet Features Draft Features Drafted Filleted Pads & Pockets Create Shell Features Impact of Feature Order on Geometry Goals: Create a tritangent fillet Create a variable fillet Create a draft Create a drafted filleted pad Create a shell Reorder features 12 Multi-Profile Sketches

How to integrate Multi-Profile sketches with a variety of other features are demonstrated. The Multi-Pad Feature Working with Sketch Sub-Elements Exercises: Use a sketch with multiple profiles to create a multi-pad feature Add dress-up features to finish the part model 13 Pattern Features This section covers how to duplicate features using patterns or the Copy/Paste command, and the mirror command. Patterning Features Copying Features Mirroring Features Exercises: Duplicate a feature using a rectangular pattern Duplicate a feature using a circular pattern Modify circular and rectangular patterns Mirror features Create patterns 14 Additional Features Additional features used to enhance model design are introduced. Thin Pads & Pockets Stiffeners Threads and Taps Goals: Create a thin pad Create a thin pocket Create a tap Create a thread Create a stiffener 15 Parent/Child Relationships A parent/child relationship in CATIA V5 is defined as the dependency of one feature on another. This subject covers how to create and modify parent/child relationships Establishing Parent-Child Relationships Feature Failure Goals: Edit parent/child relationships Resolve feature failure 16 Part Information Explained are several tools that can be used to obtain information about a parts measurements and inertia. Taking Measurements

Measuring Inertia Feature Investigation Goals: Review the feature creation history Assign a material to the part Determine the mass, volume and surface area of the part Take a measurement 17 Rib & Slot Features Introduced in this section are two more sketched features, the rib and the slot features. Ribs Slots Rib and Slot Options Goals: Create and modify a slot Create a modify a rib Create a thick rib feature 18 Multi-sections Solid Features A multi-sections solid feature is an additional feature that can add or remove material from you model Multi-sections Solids Removed Multi-sections Solids Goals: Create a multi-sections solid feature Create a removed multi-sections solid feature 19 Assembly Design This topic covers how to activate the Assembly workbench and access assemblyspecific toolbars along with the process of creating an assembly and applint the available assembly constraints. Assembly Workbench Assembly Creation Assembly Constraint Goals: Change product properties Move components with the compass Apply assembly constraints Insert a sub-assembly Create a new product 20 Assembly Techniques Additional assembly techniques as well as how to design in context are introduced. Multi-Constraint Tools Component Replication Designing in Context Overview

Goals: Use the multi-constraint tool Reuse an existing pattern

21 Assembly Information Techniques used to obtain information about an assembly are explored. Measurements Clash and Clearance Bill of Materials Goals: Extract measurements from the assembly Create a Bill of Materials Calculate interference 22 Catalogs & Save Management How to browse through CATIAs library of industry catalog is covered as well as save management, allowing modification and new name change saves.
