NEEPCO: Contributing to NER February 2012
The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation has been providing almost 60 per cent of the energy requirement of the North Eastern Region (NER). The company was quite recently in the news over its 100 MW gas-based Monarchak power plant in the West Tripura district. Prem Chand Pankaj, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), North East Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO), which has been providing almost 60 per cent of the energy requirement of the North Eastern Region (NER), assured the Tripura government that the project will start generation by 2013. NEEPCO's Contribution to NER

It operates the largest hydro and thermal power plant. It provides electricity to 7/10 houses. It provides free medical facilities to the local people at all its project sites. Projects under execution Presently, there are four projects which are under construction, three hydro projects and one thermal project. All these projects are located in various states of the North East and will be commissioned in the next three to five years. The 600 MW Kameng hydel project in Arunachal Pradesh involves construction of two concrete dams. The annual energy generation from this project will be 3,592 million units and the first year tariff of the project works out to Rs 1.48 per unit. Construction of this project has suffered due to poor geology, devastating flash floods and some complex contractual issues. The company is working out ways to accelerate progress to commission the project by the early part of the 12th Five Year Plan. The 110 MW Pare hydro-electric project in Arunachal Pradesh, a run-of-the-river (Dikrong) scheme, is expected to be commissioned in August 2013. The 60 MW hydro-electric project in Mizoram is being constructed by the company and 30 per cent of the project work has been completed. Measures are being taken to ensure that it gets commissioned by January 2014. The 101 MW Tripura gas-based power project at Monarchak, as mentioned earlier, is to be commissioned by 2013. HR, socio-economic development

With 90 per cent employees from the NER, it is poised to contribute in a big way towards the development of the region in particular, and in the nation-building exercise as a whole. Over the years, it has groomed its valuable human resource (HR) through in-house and external training programmes. Environment and ecology The company adopts suitable remedial measures to negate adverse effects on the environment and ecology during the execution, operation and maintenance of its projects. Some of the major safeguards are: Environment impact assessment, dam break analysis for possible effects in downstream reaches, compensatory afforestation, resettlement and rehabilitation, creating a green belt in project areas, generation of employment opportunities for project-affected people, terrace cultivation, environment audit and monitoring. Consultancy It has also taken up consultancy services in aspects related to preparation of generation tariffs for seven power stations of Meghalaya State Electricity Corporation and for an assessment study on manpower requirements for the sector in the region. CSR activities The company is committed to contributing to economic development while improving the quality of life of its workforce and their families as well as the local community and society at large. The community development activities are done with a focus on education, healthcare, infrastructure development, ecology and environment conservation, development programmes in tribal areas etc. Future expansion The company is geared-up to diversify in to consultancy, joint ventures in project development and also to spread to other areas of the country outside of the NER. By continuously upgrading technologies and adopting newer methodologies. It is constantly expanding its domain of expertise in the industry in order to cope with the changing environment.
