on a 24-hour day, but was paid $1320. In a statement prepared for the court case, one of the Fijian women said that when she confronted the businesswoman about the conditions, she was told she could go and work at a strip club "and be like a prostitute". "That really upset me," she said in the statement. The two women were living at the house and said they were expected to look after children 24 hours a day as well as doing housework, and were not allowed their passports. In October last year they approached Immigration New Zealand officials to help get them out. One of the women said it was confirmed soon after she came to New Zealand that she would receive $200 a week - $40 in the hand and $160 for each week when she left. The second woman, who came to New
Zealand in February last year, said at first the food was good but one day the businesswoman caught them eating chicken out of the fridge and as a result she became frightened to eat at the house. "I felt really bad so from this time on Voreqe eating out; using we startedBainimarama the money we were paid to feed ourselves." Sometimes they shared a can of sardines as a meal, because there was not enough food at the defendant's house for everyone. They were warned not to talk to anyone. At first the warnings were said in a friendly way but became more serious. When the businesswoman made it clear that they were not to have contact with anyone, they decided they were not in a good situation and looked for help. "The defendant [businesswoman] kept saying, you know that you will get $3000 when you return to Fiji, but that was for 30 weeks' work."

More than 564 drivers have been booked by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) so far this year for using mobile phones while driving. The road authority has warned that they will show no leniency on drivers found deliberately breaking traffic rules. LTA chief executive officer Naisa Tuinaceva is urging the public to report offenders who use mobile phones while driving. Mr Tuinaceva said there had been an increase in the number of bookings related to the offence recently. No driver, while driving a motor vehicle on a public street, may use any form of two way communication unless the vehicle is first brought to a standstill. Statistics released by the authority show that in 2009, 1239 drivers were booked, 1529 in 2010 and 1553 last year. Approximately 564 drivers were booked between January and May this year. Mr Tuinaceva said the message to drivers seem to fall on deaf ears. He said Regulation 51 of the Traffic Regulations states that: The law also covers taxi drivers who must not use their radio telephone to communicate with their taxi base or any other taxi

The Ministry of Health has launched a media campaign to create awareness on wellness in light of the increasing incidents of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) in the country. The National Advisor of NCDs, Dr Isimeli Tukana said the media campaign was part of the Health Ministrys strategy to move from illness approach to that of wellness approach. Dr Tukana reiterated the need for people to visit their nearest health centre or hospital regularly so that they continue to be advised on healthy lifestyle. The media campaign is to essentially tell the people that we want them to remain well and there is a rainbow approach to it. People need to go to their nearest health facility to learn about how to keep well through the seven stages of life, Dr Tukana said. The three-month campaign will also see the continuous monitoring and evaluation of how the message filters to the population and what their response is like. Russian Foreign Affairs Minister, At the moment, people in Fiji come to the health centres and nursing stations Sergey Lavrov when they are sick. We want them to come to the health centres when they are well too so that we continue to advise them on wellness, Dr Tukana said. Thats the whole purpose of the campaign. The media campaign will be through television, radio and the newspapers. There are a lot of illnesses and we believe that if we teach people on how to keep well when a mother is pregnant up to old age, we would have a better chance of doing well in the management of illnesses, the national adviser on NCDs said. Wellness needs to be improved in all phases whether it is at the nursing stations, health centres or at the hospitals. Everybody needs to take the issue of wellness seriously.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama left for China on Wednesday to attend one of Chinas biggest investment and trade symposiums, which attracts millions of business entrepreneurs and visitors from around the globe in Zhejiang Province. PM Bainimarama has been invited to attend the 14th China Zhejiang Investment & Trade Symposium (ZJITS) and the China International Consumer Goods Fair (CICGF) organised by the Ministry of Commerce and the Peoples Government of Zhejiang Province. ZJITS and CICGF are comprehensive international economic and trading events held in Zhejiang annually. Zhejiang Province Governor, Xia Baolong says the Fijian Prime Ministers visit will play a positive role as it will constitute an important platform for global cooperation, partnership, friendship as well as new business opportunities. Your presence at these two events will play a positive role in promoting the friendly exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation between Fiji and Zhejiang, Mr Baolong said. PM Bainimarama is no stranger to the province, having visited three times already and the Governor believes this
has brought the province closer to Fiji in providing a foundation for opportunities. Thanks to your support and commitment, recent years have seen continuous progress in the friendly exchanges between Fiji and Zhejiang, Mr Baolong said. The Fijian Prime Minister will also be attending the China International Consumer Goods Fair (CICGF), which is one of the four largest import and export fairs in China, held in the famous harbor city of Ningbo. In the past 10 successful sessions, CICGF has organized over 10,000 exhibitors from 30 provinces and municipalities nationwide, the fairs exhibitors consisted mainly of manufacturing enterprises, and the fair has attracted more than 120,000 buyers from 110 countries and regions. The 11th CICGF will be divided into five sections: Home Appliances and Electronics; Textiles and Garments; Sports Products, Outdoors and Recreational Products; Household Articles and Gifts; International Pavilion and Trade Service. Apart from attending the ZJITS & CICGF, Prime Minister is expected to meet with other potential investors who are interested in setting up businesses in Fiji.
The Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma, visited India this week to examine medical facilities and source expertise in various medical areas for Fiji. The Fiji High commission in New Delhi facilitated the meetings. Fijis High Commissioner to New India, Yogesh Karan, said that the Minister had productive discussions with leading medical institutions, hospitals, and research institutes regarding the enhancement of medical facilities in Fiji. According to the Fiji High Commission in New Delhi, major discussions included the areas of Medical Professionals attachments in leading hospitals, Telemedicine, Oncology, and Advanced Orthopedics. Meanwhile a medical professional from Fiji is attached at Batra Hospital in New Delhi, while another is scheduled for training in India from next month. The discussions on telemedicine followed the recent visit by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama to India during the 41st International Sugar Organization (ISO) Session in Delhi. Telemedicine is the use of telecommunication and information technologies to provide quality clinical health care from a distance. It helps eliminate distance barriers and can
improve access to medical services that would often not be consistently available in distant rural communities. It is also used to save lives in critical care and emergency situations. Overall, telemedicine optimizes the organization and delivery of medical and professional resources, reduces the need for patients and their attendants to travel, and allows local health authorities to purchase a far wider range of health care than might be possible within any one geographic region or medical infrastructure. High Commissioner Karan said that telemedicine could meet the increasing need for accessing quality healthcare, help bridge geographical barriers with the advancement of Technologies enabling digitalization of diagnostic devices. He further said that India is one of the leading nations on this technology and Fiji can benefit immensely. Meanwhile, the Fijian Government is exploring the options to source high quality pharmaceutical, Dental Oral Surgery and Prosthetic materials from India. Minister Sharma said that expressions of interest through Fiji Government Tenders are currently being invited from India and other countries for the procurement of medical supplies.
The purchase of seven tractors costing $700, 000 is part of Governments recognition of the efforts by sugar cane farmers who toil the land to help get the sugar industry back on its feet. This was confirmed by the Ministry of Sugar permanent secretary Manasa Vaniqi, who said Government was fully committed to rejuvenating the industry. Government knows that cane cultivation has become hard and an expensive exercise and thus, has bought seven tractors, Mr Vaniqi said. This will be given out to the different sugar cane growing areas in the Northern and Western Division to assist farmers during cultivation. Mr Vaniqi added the idea was to get Fijian farmers back in the land so that
unused land could be used to its full potential. Right now many young people have opted for white collar and office jobs instead of trying to make a living out of cane farming, Mr Vaniqi said. Government has put in a lot of incentives for farmers, including assisting in the renewal of retired or expired leases for up to 99 years. Mr Vaniqi believes this will help attract former farmers whose Agricultural Landlord and Tenants Act (ALTA) leases have expired. A large number of people left their homes and farms and are now living in peri urban areas in the Suva Nausori corridor. Some have gone up to Lomaivuna while others are toiling the land in Navua.
The Fiji Police Force is advising social networkers against posting sensitive information on networking sites. Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro, said the force was aware of the growing popularity of sites with users posting daily happenings of their lives including photos. The advice comes in light of a recent armed robbery incident at a home in Australia after a teenager posted a picture of a large sum of cash on her Facebook wall while helping her
grandmother count her savings at home. The force is urging users to limit the amount of sharing and avoid using public posts when publishing personal information or location, Ms Naisoro said. Careful analysis of new emerging crime trends in Fiji show a slight shift towards cyber crime and the Fiji Police would like to send this advisory as a precaution as times are quickly evolving especially in regards to law enforcement.

ALL registered voters will be given an identification card upon completion of registering electronically with the new Electronic Voting Registration (EVR). Major Isoa Loanakadavu, who heads the EVR logistical team, said the registration of a voter would take no more than three minutes. This will include the filling out of appropriate forms, a picture taken with a web camera, identification of thumb print and the printing of the identification card, he said. This identification card will be presented at the polling station during election in 2014. Major Loanakadavu said initial preparations for the EVR began in 2010. This includes the identification and collation of possible Voter Registration
Centres (VRC) all throughout Fiji, survey of routes and other logistics support aspects of such an operation. EVR teams currently in training are expected to be deployed in teams of three with a Voter Registration Kit to the confirmed VCR where registration will take place. There will no longer be house to house registration as in the previous elections. People will be encouraged to report to the VRC close to them for registration, Major Loanakadavu said. Voter Registration Centres are expected to be located throughout Fiji for Electronic Voting Registration. Major Loanakadavu said location of the confirmed centres and their opening dates and time would be confirmed later this month.

A total of 15,000 people in Fiji will be added to the elderly population in the next five years. The World Health Organizations projections revealed that by the year 2030, the world will have older persons than that of children, of
which there will be more widows than widowers. Permanent Secretary for Social Welfare Govind Sami said the change in ageing trend is a wakeup call for the authorities to develop strategies to address the economic and social implications.

The Reserve Bank of Fiji said that total exports and imports are projected to grow this year by 12.3 percent and 4.5 percent. Governor Barry Whiteside said that the growth in exports from 8.9 percent last year to over 12 percent this year is due to positive contributions from all categories of exports. The import growth is projected to be in response to the pickup in domestic demand and anticipated increases in
world market prices for mineral fuel and food. Foreign reserves remain adequate at around $1.44B equivalent to cover 4.6 months of imports of goods and services.

The Republic of Kazakhstans Non Resident Ambassador to Fiji H.E. Beibut Atamkulov met the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola in Suva and discussed avenues that would boost diplomatic relations between the two countries. Kazakhstan is one of the 15 independent states that seceded from the USSR in its dissolution in 1991 and is keen to look at opportunities for cooperation within the Asia Pacific region. Kazakhstan has recently played an important role in regards to both trade and world markets because of its oil and natural gas reserves. Within the next decade, Kazakshtan is projected to become one of the world's largest oil producers and exporters. One of the issues discussed during this meeting was the establishment of a closer working relationship between the two countries, especially on visa arrangements. First, we need to ease Kazakhstan and Fiji nationals access to either country. By that, the two countries
would be looking at a reciprocal visa arrangement. In this way, Kazakhstan and Fiji nationals will be free to visit each other without any worries on visa requirements, Ratu Inoke said. In his response, H.E. Atamkulov is really appreciative of this visit as it is an opportunity for him to learn about Fiji and to witness the beauty of this country. I am most happy to be here and to witness the beauty of nature in Fiji, H.E. Atamkulov said. He stated that a group of Kazakh businessmen would be invited to come to Fiji to look at possible business prospects in the country, especially in the tourism sector. H.E. Atamkulov is also keen to study Fijis aviation sector after discovering that Fijis national airline now offers three weekly flights to Hong Kong. For the 500,000 Kazakh tourists that leave their country for warmer places during winter, the news about these weekly flights is indeed promising, H.E. Atamkulov said.

Thirteen thousand homeowners nationwide will benefit from the three month ground rent discount program offered by Housing Authority of Fiji (HA). The Authority has collected over $40,000 in May from 200 lease land customers following the payment of their ground rent accounts and in turn provided over $3,000 in discounts for payments made this month. Through the program, HA has given its customers a discount of eight per cent if ground rent accounts where paid during the month of May. Authority chief executive Alipate Naiorosui has encouraged homeowners who are residing on HA lease land to take advantage of the offer that will only last until July 2012. HA have introduced and offered such
a discount from last month considering the damage that most homeowners in the western division experienced. HA will put 6 per cent discount on ground rent, which is now in place during June, and 4 per cent in July to encourage its leased land homeowners to settle their accounts. Naiorosui said failure to settle ground rent accounts on time will result in lending executives taking appropriate action to recover the arrears. He said once the ground rent discount program ends in July, those leased land customers accounts that remain in arrears without any arrangement for payments face being entered into the Credit Data Bureau. Further to this, HA will resort to legal action in the Small Claims Tribunal or as a last option cancel the lease by re-entry.

Indian national Muskan Balaggan, 22, has been jailed for 11 and half years and American citizen Elton Xhemali, 26, for 10 years by the High Court in Suva. Balaggan was fixed a non parole period of 9 years and Xhemali, a non parole period of 8 years. The two, Balaggan and Xhemali were sentenced and convicted before Justice Daniel Goundar after being found guilty of attempting to export a minimum of 521.6 grams of cocaine worth between $AUS200,000 to $AUS500,000 through Nadi International Airport on January 26, 2011. Balaggan was convicted of an additional charge of unlawful possession of the same illicit drug. Presiding judge Justice Goundar in sentencing said the facts as revealed by evidence from the State at the trial show the offence was well planned and organised. The offence was committed with a high degree of planning and sophistication. These features aggravated the offending. In assessing their culpability, I draw no distinction between the roles played by Balaggan and Xhemali. Both were acting in concert as couriers. In the drugs world, cocaine

Fiji does not have a sophisticated intelligence service to detect drug-smuggling. Our boarder security measures are not apt to deal with sophisticated drugsmuggling. Unless there is a tip off, it is easy to sneak in and out, hard drugs. In all cases, the hard drugs were for the overseas market. So Fiji is just being used by the drugsmugglers as a transit point for the reasons I have mentioned. He said any punishment for dealing in hard drugs must therefore reflect the vulnerability of Fiji becoming a hub for the international drug-smugglers. Half a kilo of pure cocaine is a significant amount. Depending on the percentage purity, the market value of the drugs would be between $AUS200,000.00 to $AUS500,000, said Justice Goundar. He went further to say that it was a sophisticated crime and read out the facts of the case. The court heard Xhemali arrived in Fiji on January 12, 2011 using an American passport. Fiji has agreed for the Republic of Kazakhstan to have an Honorary Consul based in Fiji to further strengthen and boost relations between the two countries. Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola offered this to the Kazakhstans Non Resident Ambassador to Fiji His Excellency Beibut Atamkulov during a meeting in Suva. The Fijian Foreign Minister said the invitation to the Republic of Kazakhstan to have an Honorary Consul in Fiji would further expedite working relations between the two countries. Since independence in 1991, Kazakhstan has pursued a balanced foreign policy and worked to develop its economy, especially its hydrocarbon industry. This could further enhance people to people relations with Fiji opening three

Speaking at the launch of the authoritys website, the chief executive officer of BAF, Elvis Silvestrini said they also aim to be a self-sustaining organization. The website, www.biosecurityfiji. com, is a significant milestone for the organization as apart from providing information on issues relating to Biosecurity, it also allows for an electronic payment system. Mr Silvestrini said BAF, which reduces the risk of pests and diseases and facilitates trade through pre-border, border and post border activities, has been able to achieve a lot since its establishment 18 months ago. We have adjusted our human resources to what we believe is optimal and Im proud to say that with the addition of highly qualified support staff, we also have a team of very capable scientists, veterinarians, entomologist, plant pathologists who are able to provide technical expertise and advise to enhance our service delivery and this is a notable achievement for BAF, Mr Silvestrini said. BAF has also undertaken several steps to strengthen Fijis border security. In September last year, for instance, we launched our surveillance vesselBiosecurity 1 to carry out surveillance and monitoring in the Yasawas and the Mamanucas. Fiji is the only country in the Pacific region to offer such a service and we are fortunate to have been able to use the Biosecurity 1 as well to assist other ministries such as the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Primary Industrys Department of Agriculture. The CEO said that to access new markets and to strengthen our existing markets, BAF website has a section for exporters to facilitate agricultural trade of Fijian commodities. Last month BAF reached another milestone with the opening of the High Temperature Forced Air Treatment (HTFA) machine in Rotuma and that facility would help us boost trade between Rotuma and Tuvalu and other Pacific Island nations in the region. Its a testament to our teams that have been able to have that facility up and running in a relatively short time, Mr Silvestrini added. New Zealand has also agreed to improved conditions for pineapple exports from Fiji to New Zealand in April this year, which Mr Silvestrini said is good news for farmers and exporters. He also added that this is an exciting year for BAF as they have many projects lined up and soon a programme would be introduced to waive fees and charges for the worst flood affected export areas in the country. This will be conducted for a period of six months and we will be coming up with more details on that very shortly. But that is an initiative that has been approved and we are very keen to implement that as soon as possible. BAF is committed to assisting our exporters and farmers in a tangible way and we are very confident that this will go a long way in bringing the agriculture industry back up to its feet.
The Fijian Governments efforts in implementing and making policies in trying to maximize the use of its resources are unique, says the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Volcom Fiji Pro tour manager, Renato Hickel. Speaking at the Volcom Fiji Pro opening in Tavarua, Mr Hickel said that the level of support given towards hosting of such events by the Fijian Government deserves to be recognized. The level of support from the Fijian Government and the Ministry of Tourism is commendable, Mr Hickel said. I have been coming here for the past 15 years and this year the government has been very supportive of the event. He also thanked the Attorney-General
and Minister for Tourism, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum who opened the championships. ASP together with our sponsors Volcom Inc. made custom made surfboards to be given to the Fijian Government as a token of appreciation for their support towards promoting surfing, not only for Tavarua but Fiji as a whole, Mr Hickel said. Mr Sayed Khaiyum thanked the sponsors and the organizers for believing in Fiji and the waves at Tavarua to host one leg of the ASP World Tour. The Fijian Government thanks ASP and the sponsors for organizing such a wonderful event and we all look forward to seeing the event annually on the ASP World Tour calendar, Mr Sayed Khaiyum said.

Dr Vinod Singh, Rajesh Chaudhary, Daven Naidu, Dr Sunil Pillay, Dr Rajen Prasad, Bob Naidu, Radhe Nand and Deepak Tahal A charitable organisation devoted to providing health care to the poor and the needy in Fiji is in need of funds to undertake another mission to the South Pacific Nation by the middle of the year. Auckland based Friends of Fiji Health Foundation needs at least $150,000 to finance the costs involved in sending a team of medical specialists, practitioners and volunteers to Fiji. Although the Foundation has been conducting charity events to mobilise financial resources, it has a long way to go to achieve its target. All members of the team work on voluntary basis, investing their time and expertise to serve the cause of the Foundation, which is to lift the standard of health among the poor in Fiji, conduct life-saving surgery and provide treatment to those diagnosed with ailments. Diabetes and Cardiovascular diseases are just among the two areas that need attention. A World Health Organisation 2008 Survey had said that there was an immediate need for strengthening clinical services for surgery, medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, ENT, emergency medicine and other relevant support services. and a Physiotherapist. The 35-member delegation will account for a team of 23 surgical specialists and a support team consisting of a project manager and logistics expert. They will spend ten days in Fiji, he said. Foundation Chairman Dr Sunil Pillay said the first mission (November 26 to December 12, 2010) was useful and helped render medical attention and assistance to Fijians in Fiji. As well as providing surgical and medical services to the needy, the need to strengthen the preventative aspect is now recognized. One of the most important issues is to screen women who are vulnerable to cervical cancer in various districts in Fiji. We will use Colposcopy and Pap Smears tests, he said. Dr Pillay will lead the Gynecology team, while Dr Ajay Kumar will be the leader of the Medical Specialist Team.
He said the first mission of the Foundation (November 26 to December 12, 2010) was successful. The surgical team, based at the Lautoka Hospital, carried out 61 procedures of which 54 were major, while the medical team focused on primary care in five smaller towns in the Western region. Two specialist physicians and their support staff assessed and formulated comprehensive management plans for 300 patients. Mr Naidu said the Foundation had a deficit of $17,000, which was filled by

Bob Naidu, a Trustee of the Foundation, said the forthcoming mission will comprise a team of surgeons, general physicians and others including Gynecologists, Anesthetists, Anesthetic Technicians, Theatre, Recovery, Pre-Clinic and Ward Nurses
Mr Naidu, who will provide support services as the Project Manager, said that the cost of travel, accommodation, food and other items for the mission would be about $80,000. We would also need about $70,000 for purchase of specialist drugs, consumable and other expenses. We are seeking the support and assistance of large medical suppliers to provide us the necessary medicines free of cost or at subsidised rates. Our mission is to save lives, give Fijians in poor health a better chance to live and foster their standard of health, he said.

Tourism Australia Under Fire For Billionaire Bill Gates' 1979 Porsche Fetches USD 80K At Auction Misleading Scene In New Ad
TOURISM Australia has come under fire over a scene in its new television commercial, which shows a couple walking along a beach in South Australia where alcohol is banned carrying a bottle of wine. Access to the beach, on Kangaroo Island, is by guided tour only in the presence of a ranger. Visitors have to stay in a group, and they can only observe the rare sea lions there from a distance, The Australian reports. Some media organisations were also sent an inaccurate promotional package with a screenshot of Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island off South Australia wrongly labeled as Seal Rock in Tasmania. Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson launched the $250 million advertising campaign in China - Australia's fastestgrowing tourism market. Tourism industry sources said several versions of the scene had been filmed but it was felt the one without a ranger and with a bottle of wine provided the best draw card for international tourists. "The agency filmed it with bottles and without bottles and with a ranger and without a ranger... but obviously the wine experience is key to promoting South Australia,'' a source told The Australian. "There was a bit of creative licence used in the end.'' A Tourism Australia spokeswoman said a ranger was present at all times during the filming. "This next phase of Tourism Australia's global campaign is about putting our best foot forward and telling the world why there truly is nothing like Australia and its incredible attractions like Kangaroo Island in South Australia,'' she said. "The couple walking along the beach tells a narrative of the amazing experiences that can be had in South Australia and specifically Kangaroo Island. It depicts a carry-over from the previous scene where the couple is inside Southern Ocean Lodge looking outside and then they are outside walking along the beach, with rangers present at all times. "On Tourism Australia's website and its tablet application that supports the stories in this campaign, reference is clearly made that this experience can only be done with a ranger, with South Australian websites to click through to for further information.'' The spokeswoman said a Tourism Australia employee had made an error in captioning material rushed to media outlets but that it was later corrected. Opposition tourism spokesman David Ridgway said the blunder was embarrassing. "This comes on top of another embarrassing blunder in which the South Australian Tourism Commission is sending, via an outdated iPhone app, interstate and overseas tourists to attractions which have been demolished two months ago,'' he said. "After getting lost... the tourist tries to find the visitor information centre with the app, which takes them to an office which closed last year.'' The new owner, from Germany, bid over the telephone to snap up the pearlescent turquoise Turbo model, after staff at the Vienna-based Dorotheum Auction House estimated that the car was worth between $48,495 and $62,173. "There was enormous interest in this item from all over the world," spokesman Wolfgang Humer quoted as saying. According to the newspaper, the car was one of the first rewards the software giant bought himself after founding Microsoft in 1975. He had apparently sold it in the 1990's. Dorotheum Auction House said that the vehicle came complete with letters to and from Microsoft and Porsche and the original Washington State USA

"The family has a Porsche, which is a nice car that we sometimes take out. We have a minivan and that's what we use when it's the five of us," he said. Forbes Magazine estimated Gates' net worth at $61 billion last March.

Marriage commissioners may charge an additional $25 per hour, in addition to the standard fee of $75 plus HST charged for basic wedding ceremonies, to recognize the added effort, preparation and travel time required for some ceremonies. Couples will continue to be charged the standard fee for basic wedding services, which are provided within one hour. The additional hourly fee applies only to time incurred over one hour and will be charged by the quarter hour. All additional fees are to be negotiated between the commissioner and the couple prior to the ceremony. Marriage commissioner fees have not increased since 1993. This change allows commissioners to offset the
costs and expectations that may be associated with more complicated ceremony preparation or destination ceremonies requiring travel. Marriage commissioners are also able to charge for ferry fees (at cost), parking fees (at cost) and mileage ($0.50/km). B.C.'s more than 340 marriage commissioners are private citizens appointed under the Marriage Act to perform civil marriage ceremonies, collect fees and register a marriage with the Vital Statistics Agency. Each year, there are approximately 22,000 marriages in B.C., with about 60 per cent of these being civil ceremonies performed by a marriage commissioner.

Three B.C. lottery ticket vendors could lose their registration and face criminal charges for theft and fraud, according to government briefing notes prepared for the provincial Solicitor General Shirley Bond in January. According to documents posted by the government online, the possible charges are the result of a province wide investigation into the theft of winning lottery tickets by ticket retailer by the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch. The investigation, which was conducted between September and December 2011 found enough evidence to recommend theft and fraud charges in three cases, according one note prepared for the minister dated Jan. 17. One other note dated Jan. 19 said one retailer had lost its licence as the result of the province wide investigation.
The notes do not name the retailers in question or say if charges have been approved by Crown prosecutors. They advise the minister not to comment on the investigation if asked, while the investigation is underway. A 2007 report by B.C.'s ombudsman Kim Carter concluded the B.C. Lottery Corporation did not have adequate procedures to ensure correct prize amounts are paid out to the rightful owners of winning tickets. A 2009 news investigation found that that lottery clerks in Manitoba were claiming prizes at a disproportionately high rate. In 2010 three members of an Ontario family which sold lottery tickets were charged with the theft of a $12 million lottery prize for a Super 7 ticket in 2003.
A new drug has hit the streets in Canada and the federal government is taking steps to stop it. The street drug is known as bath salts, called that because it resemblances what you put in your bath. Methylene-dioxypyro-valerone or MDPV is the key ingredient. The hallucinogenic can cause psychotic episodes and violent behaviour. The drug was implicated in a grisly attack in Miami on May 26, when one man chewed the flesh off another man's face on a highway as horrified motorists looked on. Police were unable to subdue the attacker, 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, and shot him dead.
Officers have speculated that Eugene, whose family described him as a mildmannered individual who rarely drank or did drugs, may have taken MDPV. The government will implement new rules to make MDPV illegal. That means possession, trafficking, importation; exportation and production of the drug would be a criminal act. It's already been banned in a number of US states. Calgary police say they haven't seen any local cases, but they fear users are turning to the internet to buy it. One online distributors sells it under the guise of being a product that helps people relax.
Beginning June 4th, cataract patients will receive foldable intraocular lenses free of charge. Foldable monofocal lenses - rather than rigid lenses - are now the standard of care for cataract surgeries and will be provided by the health authority. Previously, patients purchased lenses directly from their surgeons at a range of prices from $210 to $500.
Health authorities also now offer specialty lenses, such as multifocals, at a standard, reduced price. The price will depend on the specific type of lens. Patients who choose specialty lenses will have to pay only the cost difference between the price of the lenses they choose and the foldable monofocal lens.

Miss Universe NZ May Be Stripped Media Giant Walt Disney To Ban Of Title Junk Food Ads
MISS Universe New Zealand organizers have been left red-faced after they accidentally crowned a South African-born beauty queen who is not eligible for the title. still be confidence-boosting and great for your area to represent Howick." In another bungle for the competition, Judge Jack Yan admitted third runner-up Monique Cooley is an Australian citizen and was also ineligible for the title. Bohm moved to New Zealand from South Africa at the age of 16, speaking only Afrikaans, but now considers herself a Kiwi and said she would like to make her future in New Zealand, the media reported. "I'm so, so, so excited to meet Donald Trump, and to meet all the other girls from all the other countries," she said. However Bohm must now wait to find out from pageant organizers whether she is able to officially win the title. An online casting call stated entrants must hold New Zealand residency and citizenship. They were also required to pay a sponsorship fee of NZ$3000 (US$2271). The Miss Universe drama follows another recent beauty competition bungle in the Pacific region - with Miss World Fiji 2012 stripped of her crown last month amid claims she did not look "native enough". Torika Watters, 16, is of European/ Fijian heritage and hundreds of hateful comments had to be deleted from the official Miss World Fiji Facebook page following her win. However, the official reason given for Watters' dethroning was not because of the ugly race row but her age.
Pageant director Val Lott said she told judges not to let 22-year-old Avianca Bohm win the competition, after allowing her to enter as it would boost her confidence, as reported. Bohm, a blonde bombshell who represented the Auckland suburb of Howick, could hardly contain her excitement about meeting pageant owner Donald Trump after being crowned on Saturday night, but will not be able to travel to the Miss Universe pageant in December unless her citizenship is fast-tracked. "It's not embarrassing for the competition. It's embarrassing for the (chief) judge, who should have taken on board what I said to him," Ms Lott said. "(Bohm) and I both had a clear understanding that she could not win. I said, you can enter it because it will
Disney's move is part of a growing campaign to fight child obesity in America US media giant Walt Disney has said it will ban junk food ads on its TV, radio and online programmes. The firm, which also runs famous theme parks, said it was setting new nutrition standards to tackle America's growing problem of child obesity. US First Lady Michelle Obama described the initiative as a "game changer". However, the new rules will not come into effect until 2015, and much will depend on how Disney defines junk food, correspondents say. Makers of junk food and sugary drinks spend about $1bn a year on commercials directed at children under 12 years. revenue, but added that the company would adjust and create new products that meet standards. Mrs Obama, an active campaigner to curb child obesity, welcomed the plan. "Just a few years ago if you had told me or any other mom or dad in America that our kids wouldn't see a single ad for junk food while they watched their favourite cartoons on a major TV network, we wouldn't have believed you," she was quoted as saying. Recent studies have shown that almost a third of America's children are overweight or obese. Inevitably, there is skepticism about Disney's move, the BBC's Paul Adams in Washington reports. Still, it is all part of a growing campaign to fight obesity, our correspondent adds. Last week, in the first move of its kind by an American city, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a ban sale of super-sized sugary drinks in restaurants, delis, cinemas and sports arenas.
Skepticism
Disney said that any cereals with 10 grams or more of sugar per serving or a full meal with more than 600 calories would not be advertised. Sugary drinks and high sodium products would also be off the air, the company said. CEO Bob Iger acknowledged there might be a short-term dip in advertising

Aleem Kamal , is the President of Arza Employment Services Ltd For more information on this topic please contact employment@alameen Gift only to qualified donees(for example, other registered charities). Engage in only related business activitiesthat accomplish or promote the charity's purposes, if the charity is designated as a charitable organization or a public foundation. Do not engage in any business activities if the charity is designated as a private foundation.
What is charitable?
To qualify for registration as a charity, an organization must have purposes that are exclusively charitable and charitable activities that support those purposes. The purposes (also called objects) describe the aim or main intent of the organization. The activities describe how the organization will accomplish its purposes. Charitable purposes The courts have identified four categories of charity: 1.the relief of poverty; 2.the advancement of education; 3.the advancement of religion; and 4.certain other purposes that benefit the community in a way the courts have said is charitable. An organization's purposes must fall within one or more of these categories to be considered for registration as a charity. Charitable activities Activities are an organization's programs or how it accomplishes its purposes. Charitable activities are activities carried out to fulfill a charitable purpose. Without a charitable purpose, an organization cannot have charitable activities. To qualify for registration, an organization must show in its application that it devotes all of its resources (funds, personnel, and property) to charitable activities that directly further its charitable purposes. Therefore, it should explain, in detail, the specific activities it will undertake to achieve each of the formal purposes stated in its governing document (its incorporation documents, constitution, trust document, or other establishing documents). For example, the purpose to
relieve poverty by operating a food bank for the benefit of the poor, still needs to be accompanied by a statement of activities showing how the organization will accomplish this purpose. Public benefit test To be registered as a charity, an organization's purposes and activities must also meet a public benefit test. To qualify under this test, an organization must show that: its purposes and activities provide a measurable benefit to the public; and the people who are eligible for benefits are either the public as a whole, or a significant section of it. The beneficiaries cannot be a restricted group or one where members share a private connection; this includes social clubs or professional associations. An organization that wishes to limit its beneficiaries unreasonably, or offer an unreasonable benefit to a group or individual will not qualify for registration. Checklist Is the charity aware of the following requirements: Contact the Charities Directorate if the charity plans to engage in new activities that were not identified in its application for registration, to ensure they qualify as charitable. Limit using the charity's resources for social activities and fundraising activities as they generally are not considered charitable. If working through intermediaries such as an agent, a contractor, or any other non-qualified donee, the charity must be able to demonstrate that it retains direction and control over the use of it resources.

Age
You must be at least 18 years old to apply for Canadian citizenship. To apply for citizenship for a child under 18, make sure the following conditions are met: the person applying is the childs parent, adoptive parent or legal guardian the child is a permanent resident, but does not need to have lived in Canada for three years; and one parent is already a Canadian citizen or is applying to become a citizen at the same time. This also applies to adoptive parents.
To become Canadian citizens, adults must have lived in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) in the past four years before applying. Children under the age of 18 do not need to meet this requirement. You may be able to count time you spent in Canada before you became a permanent resident if that time falls within the four-year period. Use the citizenship calculator to find out if you have lived in Canada long enough to apply for citizenship.
Language abilities
with a citizenship judge, you will be expected to: answer simple questions on familiar topics, using short sentences; show that you know enough words for basic everyday communication; tell a simple story about everyday activities; speak about something you did in the past (or will do in the future); give simple everyday instructions and directions; and express satisfaction or dissatisfaction.
To become a Canadian citizen, you must have permanent resident status in Canada, and that status must not be in doubt. This means you must not be the subject of an immigration investigation, an immigration inquiry or a removal order (an order from Canadian officials to leave Canada).
Canada has two official languages English and French. You need to have adequate knowledge of one of these two languages in order to become a Canadian citizen. The citizenship knowledge test and your interaction with CIC staff will be used to assess if you have an adequate ability to communicate in either English or French. CIC staff will observe your ability to understand basic spoken statements and questions, and your ability to communicate basic information or respond to questions. For example, as part of your interaction with departmental staff or as part of your written test or your interview
You cannot become a citizen if you: have been convicted of an indictable (criminal) offence or an offence under the Citizenship Act in the three years before you applied; are currently charged with an indictable offence or an offence under the Citizenship Act; are in prison, on parole or on probation; are under a removal order (have been ordered by Canadian officials to leave Canada); are under investigation for, are charged with, or have been convicted of a war crime or a crime against humanity; or you have had your Canadian citizenship taken away in the past
Knowledge of Canada
five years. If you are on probation or are charged with an offence and are awaiting trial, you should wait until after the probation has ended or the trial is over to apply for citizenship. If you have spent time on probation, on parole or in prison in the last four years, you may not meet the residence requirement for citizenship. Time in prison or on parole does not count as residence in Canada. Time on probation also does not count as residence in Canada if you were convicted of an offence. If you have spent time on probation from a conditional discharge, it may be counted toward residence. For details, contact the Call Centre.
To become a citizen, you must understand the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, such as the right and responsibility to vote in elections. You must also have an understanding of Canadas history, values, institutions and symbols. The information you need to know is in our free study guide Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. We will send you a copy of it once we have received your application. The questions in the citizenship test are based on the information in this guide.
There are some people who think marriage to a Canadian citizen will be their ticket to Canada. It is a crime for foreign nationals to marry Canadian citizens or permanent residents only to gain entry into Canada. Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) is working to prevent these fraudulent marriages. In many cases, sponsors and foreign
applicants arrange a marriage of convenience: a marriage or commonlaw relationship where the sole purpose is for the sponsored spouse to immigrate to Canada. CIC officers are specially trained to recognize genuine immigration applications, and they know how to detect marriages of convenience. They use several methods to uncover

Hold a light dumbbell in your r i g h t hand. Lean forward and place your left hand on a firm surface, such as a countertop or chair back, for support and stability. Extend your right arm down and then pull it back until your arm is just about parallel to the floor. Keeping your arm at this level, bend your arm at the elbow. Make sure your shoulders stay as still as possible during this movement. Lower the weight slowly to its start position, then complete as many repetitions as you like. When finished, repeat with the opposite arm.

Lie on a weight bench while holding a barbell. Your hands should be about shoulder-width apart on the barbell. Choose a weight that is comfortable for you to start, and then gradually increase the weight as you become stronger. You should also use a spotter for this exercise. Extend your arms over your head until your arms are almost fully extended and the barbell is above your forehead. Slowly lower the barbell back down towards your head without touching it. Repeat as many times and you like, taking rests in between when necessary. Arm Circles Hold a light dumbbell in each hand. If you don't have dumbbells, a can of soup or a full water bottle can be substituted for this exercise. Hold your arms straight out from your sides. Your hands should be at about shoulder height. Make 20 small circles with each hand in a forward motion. Reverse to do 20 small circles with each hand in a backwards motion. Take a rest and repeat as many times as you like.
Salt in moderation actually is healthpromoting. It helps your muscles contract properly, assists with nerve function, and regulates fluid balance. But most folks consume far too much of it. High sodium intake contributes to high blood pressure (hypertension), which exerts enormous pressure and stress on your vital organs, particularly your heart. If you are stressed, you need to pay particular attention to the amount of sodium in your diet. In general, 1,500 to 2,400 milligrams is the most you want to consume in a day. 1. Make your own condiments. Rather than trying out that Cilantro Caesar, whip up your own mayo quickly by emulsifying olive oil and organic eggs, and sprinkle in your own herbs and cheeses. Youll not only avoid sodium, youll avoid cheap vegetable oils and chemicals deleterious to your health. 2. Choose smart condiments.
Avoid things like soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce. Go for Braggs aminos, low-sodium soy sauce, or vinegars instead. For any flavor component, you can usually find a fresher, healthier alternative. 3. Watch portions! Did you know that just one tablespoon of soy sauce contains over 1,000 milligrams of sodium? How many of us eat 2 or 3 tablespoons when we go for sushi? Watch the portions of sodium-rich foods and condiments. 4. Avoid cured meats. Standard bacon, sausages, and lox all contain massive amounts of salt. But you can easily get around this by first cutting portions and second going for uncured varieties of your favorite decadent meats. Reserve salamis and prosciutto for special occasions only. 5. Dont eat processed when fresh will do.
Canned and packaged foods even veggies and vegetarian entrees are usually loaded with sodium. Choose fresh or frozen foods with little to no sodium. Your best bet is following the outer perimeter of the grocery store, choosing only fresh veggies and fruits, meats, eggs, dairy and (unsalted) nuts. 6. Watch for healthy foods high in sodium. Sure, nuts are a gift from nature: rich in fiber, protein, healthy fats, and vitamins. But the salted, tinned varieties are terrible on your cardiovascular system and kidneys. Buy raw, organic, and unsalted nuts. 7. Read the labels and know the terms. MSG, baking soda, baking powder, disodium phosphate, sodium alginate, and sodium nitrate all boil down to the same thing: sodium! Check the nutrition label to make sure the item
doesnt contain these ingredients, or, if it does, that the level is under 15% of your total daily limit. (There will be exceptions, but thats a good general rule of thumb.) 8. Choose low-sodium products. Sometimes we do need processed items for cooking like butter and chicken stock. Choose the unsalted or low-sodium options. 9. Stop using salt in cooking. Youll find that you really dont need salt in most recipes, period. Just leave it out. 10. Rely on flavor, not saltiness. Food manufacturers pour on the salt because its cheap, cheap, cheap. Our mouths get accustomed to the flavor and lose the ability to appreciate other tastes that are just as pleasurable as salt, if not more so. So try out fresh herbs and spices instead for maximum flavor without the sodium.

Canadians are OK with going into debt for major milestones, such as buying a home, or paying for school, a wedding or honeymoon, a new survey has found. The TD Canada Trust Report says 41% of respondents find it difficult to save money and continue to enjoy their current lifestyles, so many rely on loans, lines of credit, credit cards, and gifts from friends and family. B.C. tourism jobs are expected to explode in the coming years with about 100,000 new positions to be filled by 2020, according to a report released Monday. A labour study from go2, the industrys human resource association, predicts about 44,000 jobs will be created through tourism growth over the next eight years. Another 57,000 positions are coming open due to retirements. After several years of slow labour growth, the tourism industry is poised to expand, go2 CEO Arlene Keis said in a statement. The provincial government, meanwhile, aims to expand tourism industry revenue growth by 5% annually until it hits $18 billion by 2016. The study estimates the new tourism jobs will account for 10% of the provinces overall job growth. Our government is committed to providing British Columbians with the skills training opportunities needed to fill the anticipated one million job openings in our province by 2020, Tourism Minister Pat Bell said in a
statement. We are working closely with industry partners like go2 to make sure that we are focusing government investments where they will have the most impact like training workers for careers in the tourism industry." The report predicts tourism will account for 300,000 jobs by 2020 an increase of 17.3% since 2010. This represents an average annual growth of 1.6% 0.2% higher than the overall provincial growth of 1.4%. But the high demands for jobs means the province is ramping up recruitment strategies to draw in more workers. This includes career campaigns abroad and tapping under-represented talent pools such as youth, aboriginals, new immigrants, older workers and people with disabilities. The tourism industry often provides people with their important first job and sets them on their career path, Keis said. Tourism is also the largest employer of youth, with one-in-four British Columbians under the age of 24 working in the industry.

Visit By An Elderly Nana (Grandfather) To Auckland, New Zealand By Thakur Ranjit Singh Makes Our Day
and secondary education, he attended Natabua Teachers Training College in 1940 and the following year joined Fiji Civil Service where he served for 35 years. He retired in 1975 and same year migrated to Canada when only few people from Fiji were migrating anywhere. His decorations were being appointed Justice of Peace (JP) in 1965 when only a few Indians were bestowed this honour, and was awarded Fiji Independence Medal in 1970 for his service to the country. I served in your home town of Ba when our former Prime Minister Ratu Mara was District Officer (DO) of Ba. I have also served in Suva, Nausori, Navua, Vinidawa and Labasa, he said with pride, while sipping New Zealands Export gold beer. This was confirmed by my recent meeting with 88 year old Bas stalwart Alliance politician and a long term friend of Ratu Mara, James Shankar Singh. Both Mr. and Mrs. Singh still fondly recall their old friend and long-serving Indian civil servant when we had very few of our own in public service. Tiwari fondly talks about his marriage to Saroj Wati Sharma in Labasa while he was stationed there. Indeed you have to be lion-hearted to ask Police Inspector Shiu Prasad Sharma for his daughter, but for a very tall, energetic, handsome and educated pundit, this was not difficult at all. Pundit Tiwari is blessed with a son and daughter, Anjani and Anil Vilash, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Punditji is a very compassionate and loving person, and this is reflected in his 15 years of volunteer service with Surrey Red Cross for which he has been given numerous certificates and medals. Pundit Kapil Vilash Tiwari is an old timer, very respected and well-known member of the Fijian community in Greater Vancouver Area. He is not entirely lonely in Vancouver, as Mahend Sharmas brother, Dhirendra Sharma, better known as Dan, is a practising Pundit/Purohit in Vancouver, who always takes time out to make sure his ageing Nana is not lonely, and regularly keeps in touch with octogenarian Tiwari. I join my friend Mahendra Sharma and his family and other well-wishers, family and friends in Auckland, New Zealand, as well as in Vancouver in wishing Mr Tiwari the best of health and a long life. We are blessed with elders of this longevity and calibre and may we be honoured with many more years with him. I will be in Vancouver in late July this year and hope to receive his blessings, again. God bless him. [E-mail: thakurji@xtra.co.nz]
Thakur Ranjit Singh and Mahendra Sharma, sharing good times with octogenarian Ravinandan Kapil Vilash Tiwari in Auckland, New Zealand. Mahendra Sharma, my close friend from Ranui in West Auckland, New Zealand used to talk a great deal about his Nana (grandfather) Tiwari, residing in Vancouver. It was then indeed a great pleasure to meet Ravinandan Kapil Vilash Tiwari in person. What made the occasion sweeter was that such a day happened to be my birthday on 16th February, 2012. And for a man of such advanced age, I was surprised with his good health and his ability to still enjoy his beer at such advanced age, when all they have is, maybe, red wine. In fact Tiwari is the youngest brother of Mahends Nana, Sant Vilash, and as is done in extended Hindu families, Ravinandan is regarded as if he were the real Nana. Tiwari was born on 25th July 1923 at Wainibokasi, Nausori and hence is just hitting 89 next month. For an Indo Fijian, that is considered a very advanced age. I do not have any companion as all of people of my age are no more there, either in Fiji or Vancouver, he complains. He was born just three years after indenture (girmit) system in Fiji was abolished. Hailing from the famous Vilas family from Fiji, Krishna Vilash of Broadway Mufflers and a community worker in Fiji, is Nanas nephew. He had three brothers: Ram, Sant and Shiu Vilash and three sisters who all are no more an additional proof of his advanced age. His parents were visionary and had recognised the importance of education when in 1920s and 1930s, it was usual for parents to put their children in farms. He attained his education at Wainibokasi Sanatan Dharam School and Methodist Mission School at Dilkusha, Nausori. After his primary

All types of child abuse and neglect leave lasting scars. Some of these scars might be physical, but emotional scarring has long lasting effects throughout life, damaging a childs sense of self, ability to have healthy relationships, and ability to function at home, at work and at school. Some effects include: 1. Lack of trust and relationship difficulties. If you cant trust your parents, who can you trust? Abuse by a primary caregiver damages the most fundamental relationship as a childthat you will safely, reliably get your physical and emotional needs met by the person who is responsible for your care. Without this base, it is very difficult to learn to trust people or know who is trustworthy. This can lead to difficulty maintaining relationships due to fear of being controlled or abused. It can also lead to unhealthy relationships because the adult doesnt know what a good relationship is. 2. Core feelings of being worthless or damaged. If youve been told over and over again as a child that you are stupid or no good, it is very difficult to overcome these core feelings. You may experience them as reality. Adults may not strive for more education, or settle for a job that may not pay enough, because they dont believe they can do it or are worth more. Sexual abuse survivors, with the stigma and shame surrounding the abuse, often especially struggle with a feeling of being damaged. 3. Trouble regulating emotions. Abused children cannot express emotions safely. As a result, the emotions get stuffed down, coming out in unexpected ways. Adult survivors of child abuse can struggle with unexplained anxiety, depression or
anger. They may turn to alcohol or drugs to numb out the painful feelings. Types of child abuse There are several types of child abuse, but the core element that ties them together is the emotional effect on the child. Children need predictability, structure, clear boundaries and the knowledge that their parents are looking out for their safety. Abused children cannot predict how their parents will act. Their world is an unpredictable and a frightening place with no rules. Whether the abuse is a slap, a harsh comment, stony silence or not knowing if there will be dinner on the table tonight, the end result is a child that feel unsafe, uncared for and alone. Emotional child abuse Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me? Contrary to this old saying, emotional abuse can severely damage a childs mental health or social development, leaving lifelong psychological scars. Examples of emotional child abuse include: 1. Constant belittling, shaming and humiliating a child 2. Calling names and making negative comparisons to others 3. Telling a child he or she is no good," "worthless," "bad," or "a mistake." 4. Frequent yelling, threatening or bullying. 5. Ignoring or rejecting a child as punishment, giving him or her the silent treatment. 6. Limited physical contact with the childno hugs, kisses, or other signs of affection. 7. Exposing the child to violence or the abuse of others, whether it be the abuse of a parent, a sibling or even a pet.

Regular exercise is highly effective for the prevention and treatment of many common chronic diseases, and improves cardiovascular health and longevity. But a recent research has suggested that chronic training for, and competing in, extreme endurance exercise such as marathons, iron man distance triathlons, and very long distance bicycle races may cause structural changes to the heart and large arteries, leading to myocardial injury. Researchers review the literature and outlines in detail for the first time the mechanisms, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations of cardiovascular injury from excessive endurance exercise. "Physical exercise, though not a drug, possesses many traits of a powerful pharmacologic agent. A routine of daily physical activity can be highly effective for prevention and treatment of many diseases, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, heart failure, and obesity," said lead author James H. O'Keefe, MD, of Saint Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, MO. "However, as with any pharmacologic agent, a safe upper dose limit potentially exists, beyond which the adverse effects of physical exercise, such as musculoskeletal trauma and cardiovascular stress, may outweigh its benefits," he added. Dr. O'Keefe and his colleagues present emerging data suggesting that extreme endurance training can cause transient structural cardiovascular changes and elevations of cardiac biomarkers, all of which return to normal within one week. For some individuals, over months and years of repetitive injury, this process can lead to the development of patchy myocardial fibrosis, particularly in the atria, interventricular septum, and right ventricle, and an increased susceptibility to atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. In one study, approximately 12percent of apparently healthy marathon runners showed evidence for patchy myocardial scarring, and the coronary heart disease event rate during a twoyear follow up was significantly higher in marathon runners than in controls. Although it has been recognized that elite-level athletes commonly develop abnormal electrocardiograms and atrial and ventricular entropy, these adaptations traditionally have not been thought to predispose to serious arrhythmias or sudden cardiac death. However, it now appears that the cardiac remodeling induced by excessive exercise can lead to rhythm abnormalities. Endurance sports such as ultramarathon running or professional cycling have been associated with as much as a 5-fold increase in the prevalence of atrial fibrillation. Chronic excessive sustained exercise may also be associated with coronary artery calcification, diastolic dysfunction, and large-artery wall stiffening. Lifelong vigorous exercisers generally have low mortality and disability rates and excellent functional capacity, Dr. O'Keefe noted. He suggested that further investigation is needed to identify who is at risk for adverse cardiovascular remodeling, and to formulate physical fitness regimens for conferring optimal cardiovascular health and longevity.
It might be beneficial to include yoga in the in-patient or out-patient rehabilitation people receive after a stroke, researchers have suggested
A study looking into the value of adapted yoga for stroke rehabilitation found that after an eight-week program, study participants demonstrated improved balance and flexibility, a stronger and faster gait, and increased strength and endurance. The study, involving researchers from the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and IU Bloomington, exposed older veterans recovering from stroke to yoga. The men and women had completed their post-stroke occupational and physical therapy before the study but continued to have impairments. Arlene Schmid, rehabilitation research scientist at the Roudebush VA Medical Center and principle investigator of the VA-funded study, said loss of functional strength, flexibility and endurance is common after a stroke, which can lead to long-term disability. 'Clinicians need methods to manage and improve these post-stroke physical impairments,' said Schmid, also an assistant professor of occupational therapy in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at IUPUI. Her analysis examined gains in functional strength, flexibility and endurance as a result of the yoga and found significant improvements in all areas. The yoga activities, she said in her report, might have 'improved neuromuscular control, likely allowing for strength improvements in affected limbs, sides or areas of disuse.' Tracy Dierks, associate professor of physical therapy in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, focused his analysis of study findings on how well study participants could walk after the program. He reported that after the yoga program, the study participants showed improved balance and faster gait speeds with longer steps or strides. But, while the veterans could walk faster, they were unable to sustain this faster speed for the duration of the six-minute test. 'The gait findings from our study have the potential to greatly impact clinical practice for gait recovery. The yoga intervention was designed to improve balance, not gait; we did not focus on improving gait at all. Yet we saw major improvements in most clinical gait measurements. But one often overlooked deficit remained: the inability to sustain gait speed for endurance,' Dierks said.

Career
November 6, 1985) was one of the most prominent Indian actors in Bollywood. Sanjeev Kumar was born as Haribhai Jariwala in Gujarat to a Gujarati family. His first home was in Surat and family based in Mumbai. A stint in the film school took him to Bollywood, where he eventually became a movie star. He remained a bachelor all his life and died of a massive heart attack in 1985. He has two younger brothers and a sister.
(1975), Mausam (1975), Angoor (1981) and Namkeen (1982). Many of his fans believe that these are some of the best films that he did. He was always ready to take unconventional roles that challenged him as an actor. He played Mirza, a chess-obsessed Lucknowi (citizen of Lucknow), in Satyajit Ray's classic Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977). Perhaps his best-remembered roles were in the blockbuster films Sholay (1975) and Trishul (1978). In Naya Din Nayi Raat (1974) Sanjeev Kumar reprised the nine-role epic performance by Sivaji Ganesan in Navarathiri (1964), which was also previously reprised by Akkineni Nageswara Rao in Navarathri (Telugu; 1966). This film has enhanced his status and reputation as a serious actor in Hindi cinema. During the early 1980s, Sanjeev Kumar did more supporting roles than playing the lead. In 1980, he starred in a Punjabi movie Fauji Chacha. .

Death
In 1985 at the age of 47 Sanjeev Kumar had a massive heart attack, resulting in his death. Ironically for an actor who played many elderly roles, he did not live to the age of 50. Ten of his already completed films were released after his death, with his
In the first official confirmation from the family, Saif Ali Khan's mother, Sharmila Tagore has confirmed her sons marriage to actor Kareena Kapoor on October 16. "Yes, that's the date we have decided upon. There will be a reception, too, but not a very big one." The wedding ceremony, said close sources, will be a quiet affair, too. Sources close to Tagore said that Kapoor, like her would be motherin-law, will continue acting in films. "Sharmilas best innings as an actress started after marriage. Saif was a baby on the sets of one of her best films, 'Aradhana'. Kareena will follow in her footsteps. After marriage, she will do two films a year. Right after she completes Madhur Bhandarkars 'Heroine', shell begin shooting for Sanjay Leela Bhansalis 'Ram Leela'," said the source.
In fact, Kapoor has assured a very worried Bhansali that she will not take a break for her wedding. The wedding, which will be held at the Pataudis ancestral home, will only be attended by immediate family members of the couple. Says the source, "Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi died only recently, so the family wanted a low-key wedding. Kareena and her family agreed, too. However, there may be a large reception bash after the wedding, considering both Saif and Kareena have many friends in the film industry." The venue for the wedding reception is still undecided. It may be held in Mumbai on the wedding day itself. Says the source, "The honeymoon, however, will have to wait. Kareena has no intentions of letting her films suffer after marriage."
A conservative Hindu group has objected to a song in the new film "Shanghai" calling it "anti-national" and a "clear insult" to India. The group is seeking to ban the release of film because of the song. Director Dibakar Banerjee gestures while addressing the media while actress Kalki Koechlin looks on during a press conference held for their upcoming movie 'Shanghai' A Hindu nationalist group filed a court case on Monday seeking to ban the release of Bollywood film "Shanghai" over satirical lyrics that describe India as a land of diseases and cow dung. Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena (BSKS), a conservative Hindu group based in New Delhi, said it had applied for the court order on the basis that the song was "antinational" and a "clear insult" to the country. The movie, a political thriller scheduled for release on June 8, tackles the thorny
issue of the poor being thrown off their land for urban development and compares modernization in India with China. The song, called "Say victory to Bharat Mata (Mother India)", includes the words "India is land of dengue, malaria... and cow dung". "We want the court to impose a blanket ban on the song. How can we allow anyone to ridicule our own country like this?" said Tajinder Singh Bagga, the president of BSKS. The film's director Dibakar Banerjee, who has a reputation for controversial films, was not immediately available for comment. Bollywood plots traditionally celebrate family values and conservative lifestyles, with even the briefest screen kiss frowned upon, but recent output has addressed divisive social issues and included some daring sex scenes.

A sequel to Pyaar Ke Side Effects is finally finalized. The film is titled Shaadi Ke Side Effects. Farhan Akhtar will be replacing Rahul Bose, while Vidya Balan takes the place of Mallika Sherawat. The producer of the film Pritish Nandy says that it is a funny, clever, wild film, potraying love, before and after marriage. The sequel will be directed by Saket Choudhary, music for the film will
be by Pritam. The film will also mark Farhan Akhtars first room-com. He is very excited to work with Vidya Balan. Vidya Balan is excited too, about the film as she loved the original one. She said, Sakets observation of relationships is simple and that makes it naturally and perhaps sometimes even unintentionally funny, mad and sexy. The release date of Shaadi Ke Side Effects is not confirmed yet.
Yash Raj banner Dhoom 3 is the next awaited Bollywood movie. It stars Aamir Khan in the lead. In the movie, the perfectionist is playing a gym instructor and guess who is training Aamir for the role. It is none other than Jackie Shroffs rough and tough son Tiger. A source informs, "Since Aamir plays a gym instructor in Dhoom 3, it isn't just a great physique that he needs to work on. Aamir needed a particular kind of physique to look convincing as a physical trainer. He also needed to learn the art and technique of physical training in the gym. This is where Aamir without hesitation sought the help of Tiger." Tiger Shroff initially hesitated to train Aamir Khan. He said, "Yes, he was kind enough to invite me for a workout with him. But what could I possibly offer Aamir Sir?" Tiger also revealed, "We did some functional and core-related workouts. They were basically exercises that engage and recruit your abdominal muscles." Dhoom 3 is going to be larger than life in context of style, statement, action
and romance. It had a massive start with John Abraham and the sleekness of the movie was carried forward by Hrithik Roshan. Now Aamir Khan is set to create a benchmark with Dhoom 3. Katrina Kaif has been roped to play Aamirs leading lady and the diva will be seen in some daredevil stunts.

ideal breeding ground for killer fish. At this park are the usual suspects, a crazy owner, young nubile staff more than happy to show their "stuff", meddling romance and law enforcement types. Adolescent friction and fledgling juvenile love affairs can't mask the fear and paranoia that strikes the region once a group of fish go on the rampage. Stupid action and ridiculous fish with giant overbites are the obvious draw to this movie. Plenty of nubile young female flesh is on display and a kitchy appearance by Baywatch pop icon David Hasselhoff are around for the laughs. But the biggest surprise are these mean spirited fish who are quite revolting in a fun sort of way. Various grisly attacks that are stupidly funny mock the whole premise of this horror flick. Blame this stupid and corny movie on director John Gulager who certainly excels in turning a few stomachs here. Piranha 3DD is so corny it has a certain charm be it in obvious bad taste. Humble(?) actor David Koechner is up to his eyeballs in trouble as Chet, the waterpark owner while Danielle Panamaker does what she can to make sense out of it all as Maddy. Some neat death traps and fish who know when it's feeding time turn Piranha 3DD a real guilty pleasure that some teens will thoroughly enjoy.
Hook, line and sinker they fall fast and furious in Piranha 3DD,the latest would be horror/gore fest from Alliance Films
now hoping to give patrons long lives at Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Cineplex Odeon Theatres around B.C.
Hold on a moment folks. A group of pesky fish may ha ve a thing or two to say about this plan otherwise it's doubtful this film could have been made. No fish was harmed in the making of this film must go down as the understatement of the century. Oh, here we go again, this group of underwater carnivores don't seem real. Instead they were likely conjured up by some special effects and/or makeup whiz. Campiness and poor shlock is the definite order of the day here as the filmmakers have here churned out one of the ultimate B-films in movie history. Cinema afficionadoes and horror experts will undboutedly know that the first Piranha movie proved somewhat of a shocker, not unlike the effect of Jaws for Steven Spielberg. Check that, maybe we're exagerrating things just a tad. Similarities, however, exist between the two film types. In Piranha 3D again we have unsuspecting swimmers and just plain waders not knowing there is anything dangerous in the water. Big mistake. Action here takes place in a small watering hole in a small quaint town. About the only thing raising any degee of excitement is the scheduled opening of a new water park - perfect for kids and adults - and perhaps the

Vladimir Krutov, Former Canuck And Soviet Hockey Star, Dies At Age 52
Vladimir Krutov, one of the Soviet Unions all-time great hockey players and part of the national teams formidable KLM Line, has died. He was 52. The Russian Hockey Federation said Krutov died Wednesday. It did not give a cause of death, but the ITAR-Tass news agency said he had been taken to a hospital several days earlier for stomach bleeding. Volodya was such a dependable and steadfast man that I would have gone anywhere with him to war, to espionage, into peril. There are fewer and fewer guys like him in every generation of hockey players, federation president and former Soviet goaltender Vladislav Tretyak told the Sport-Express newspaper. Born in Moscow, Krutov gathered attention for his play with local factory team Meteor and was then invited to the hockey school of the CSKA Moscow club. He played with the team between 1978 and 89. Krutov and his CSKA teammates Igor Larionov and Sergei Makarov formed one of the most potent scoring lines that hockey has ever seen, and led the Soviet team to gold in the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. He was also part of the team that lost to the United States at the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics and won five world championship titles in the 1980s. Along with defencemen Vyacheslav Fetisov and Alexei Kasatonov, they became known as the Green Unit for the colour of their practice jerseys. He was one of the first Soviet players to play in the NHL, but spent only one undistinguished season with the Vancouver Canucks. He later played for Zurich and Swedish lower-league clubs Ostersund and Brunflo, and coached CSKA for one season in 2001-02. After that, he was director at a state sports school. In 2010, he was inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federations hall of fame.

Gulshan Grover Bollywood filmmakers have strange ideas about our neighbouring countries and their national costume. How else do you explain legendary villain Pran's bizarre get-up as Chinese tyrant Deng Do Rani in the Dev AnandSharmila Tagore starrer, Ye Gulistan Hamara?
Goga Kapoor A smooth-looking bad guy who insisted on using his own name as his screen name, his characters were a blend of both lady killer, literal and figurative, as well as buffoon. Ever-clownish in fight scenes, Chopra was frequently pummeled by all and sundry, running back to his evil father figure wailing about vengeance. In the 80s, he had quite a run with films like Naseeb, Andha Kanoon, Betaab, Mard and Joshilaay.
Danny Dengzongpa With his shirt unbuttoned well past his hirsute chest, and his jaw frequently slack with a bullying laziness, the industry's foremost izzat-looter wore his rapist persona loud and proud. And this even when he wasn't actually pouncing on the hero's sister. Pran And there are some who don't need beads and eye-caps to evoke detest. Amjad Khan's loutish Gabbar Singh has to do little more than address Sambha or Kaalia in his slow, seething tone or slap the rocks with his bulletpacked belt to know he's not to be messed with.Amjad Khan In much the same way as it used Impalas in chase scenes to impart a sense of the foreign and exotic, Hindi cinema used the Australian Christo throughout the 1980s as the nefarious face of white-man evil.
Sanjay Dutt in Agneepath It's hard to take someone seriously if they're clad in so many layers of brocade, Kader Khan's Mantrik, however, makes for a glowering exception. As the power-hungry sorcerer with a dreadful laugh and mysterious beard, Khan is a picture of unmistakable cunning. Better known for his screwball humour, the actor is at his eerie best, smoothly shifting from amusing to alarming, in this tacky but entertaining Bollywood fantasy of the 1980s.
Prem Chopra Before he became Govinda's comic sidekick in the 90s, Kapoor rose through the 80s embodying the spirit of the brash son of a moneyed father, a young scion who knew no limits. It was a relevant character-type in our cinema, and Kapoor played the spoilt and arrogant with much flair. And while it must be admitted that despite all his machine-gun toting antics in Naseeb, he remains a secondstring villain, Kapoor makes it to the list anyway because he played Lex Luthor in the atrocious desi Superman.
Ranjeet A first name like Goga, even if it's a borrowed one, can pigeonhole an actor somewhat. Not that the tough man cared, reveling in roles from strongman to Sadhu, leaving a trail of bruised and slaughtered bodies in his wake. The 1908s saw him start off as a smalltime piece of muscle Do Aur Do Paanch, Shaan, Satte Pe Satta but as his fights with Amitabh Bachchan started looking more convincing, he graduated to the big-time, ending the decade with films like Shahenshah and Toofan.
