1. Introduction
The Interactive Petrophysics (IP) plug-in for Petrel allows you to import and export wells, well logs and well tops between the Interactive Petrophysics 3.3 database and a Petrel 2007.1.2 project. You do not need to have Interactive Petrophysics installed to make use of the interface, as the IP plug-in includes its own database engine. Version 3.3.3 of the plug-in will only work with Interactive Petrophysics 3.3 databases. If the IP application is updated, a new version of the interface will be made available.

2. IP plug-in for Petrel features

The IP plug-in for Petrel adds a new entry to Petrels File menu, as shown below:

IP plug-in for Petrel Schlumberger Public entry

The IP plug-in for Petrel menu contains the following entries: Import from Interactive Petrophysics this allows you to import data from an Interactive Petrophysics 3.3 database into a Petrel project. See the Import section later for more details. Export to Interactive Petrophysics this allows you to export data from a Petrel project to an Interactive Petrophysics 3.3 database. See the Export section later for more details. Launch Interactive Petrophysics this launches the Interactive Petrophysics application if it is installed on your PC. If an installed copy of IP cannot be found automatically, a file browser will be displayed; from here you should browse to the location of Intpetro.exe this is usually found in the C:\Program Files\IntPetro33 folder. Once the file path has been established it will be remembered for subsequent launches.

Both the Import and Export interfaces utilise a tree view browser that allows

you to select multiple wells, well logs and well tops to transfer between the IP database and the Petrel project.

When an IP database is accessed (from either IP or Petrel) the accessed wells are locked. This prevents other users from opening the wells. If you try to open locked wells, you will get the message shown below. If you select Yes a new well is added; whereas if you select No, no well will be added.

2.1. Import from Interactive Petrophysics database

The Import from Interactive Petrophysics window allows you to import wells, curves and zones from an Interactive Petrophysics 3.3 database into a Petrel 2007.1 project. The Import window is subdivided into five main areas: 1. Database location the Browse button allows you to find the relevant IP database to be imported into Petrel. Once a database location has been selected, it will be retained for subsequent Imports and Exports. 2. Filtering and mapping Template name This allows you to select a template from the dropdown menu (by default <none> is selected).

Edit This allows you to edit the template by selecting the Edit button, which will open the Mapping templates dialog box (for more information, see section 2.2). Final curves only When you select this option, ticking a well or curve set will only select the curves that are marked as Final within IP. All curves - When you select this option (the default), ticking a well or curve set in the browser tree will select all the contained curves for import. Edit unit mappings (this option is described in section 2.1.1).

3. The IP Database Browser window, found in the lower left. This is where the selected database items are located. 4. The Curves tab found in the lower right of the window. This is sub-divided in two further windows, Wells to import and Curves to import. 5. The Zone tab, found in the lower right of the window, next to the Curves tab, allows you to import zones into Petrel.

2.1.1. Edit unit mappings

When importing an IP curve into Petrel, it is important that you use the correct unit of measurement, to maintain the integrity of the data. Unlike IP, Petrel units are casesensitive; therefore, there is the risk that Petrel may not recognize the IP curves unit of measurement. If this happens, the curve is imported into Petrel with the General template with no units of measurement; it is up to you to set the correct template within Petrel. While this is not ideal, it ensures that IP curves can always be imported into Petrel.

To help avoid curves being imported as General, the interface comes with a set of pre-defined unit conversions, which a list of possible IP units and Petrel equivalents. The import process will use this list to try and match each of the IP curve units to the correct Petrel units. The list of unit mappings can be expanded or modified by clicking on the Edit mappings button. Simply edit the existing conversions or add new ones to the bottom of the list.

IP units are not case sensitive, but Petrel units are case sensitive.

2.1.2. IP database browser The IP database browser allows you to expand Wells, Sets and to view the available curves associated with the well. You can select wells and curves for import to Petrel by ticking the relevant tick boxes (the '+' button will expand the Well or Set listing); to deselect wells or curves un-check the boxes in the IP Database Browser window. The screenshot below shows a Mapping template being selected. To import the required curves, tick the relevant IP set within the well for the Wells to import and Curves to import. Once you have selected a template, the Mapped to column will be automatically filled in with the Petrel assigned name.

2.1.3. Curves tab Within the Curves tab there are two windows: Wells to import and Curves to import. These windows display the wells and curves that you have selected in the IP database browser window. Each item to import has a Mapped to selector, which allows you to select which Petrel item to map. The Mapped to drop-down menu will contain the following options: Not Mapped this will stop the item from being imported. New Entry if a Petrel item with the same name already exists, it will be reused; otherwise, a new item will be created within Petrel, with the same name as the selected IP item. If a Mapping Template has been selected and a match is found, the appropriate entry will be pre-selected for you. If no Mapping Template has been selected, or there are no items within the selected template that match the IP items name, this will become the default selection.
Schlumberger Public

The drop-down menu will also contain a list of the existing Petrel items of the correct type. These allow you to select an existing Petrel item to map the IP item to.

2.1.4. Zones tab The IP database browser allows you to import tops or zones from IP into Petrel. Use the relevant check boxes to select the required tops. If you have already mapped the tops in a Mapping template, the Mapped to selector will be automatically filled with the well name. When IP zones are imported into Petrel they are imported as Other well tops, and can be found under the Well tops folder in the Petrel Input tree. The name of the well top in Petrel will match that of the IP zone name. If you have not done any mapping, the Mapped to box will show New entry or Not mapped.

After selecting wells, curves, tops and zones, copy the IP data into the Petrel database by hitting the Copy button. The Petrel Message Log window will appear showing the progress of the import, as well as any errors which may have occurred. When you have finished importing data, close the Import window.

2.2. Mapping templates

Whenever an item (a well, curve or zone) is imported from an IP database it must be assigned a name within the target Petrel project. When items are shown in the import lists the Mapped to column shows the name they will be assigned within Petrel. By default all items are shown as mapping to a New entry this means that if a Petrel item with the same name already exists, it will be reused, otherwise a new item will be created within Petrel with the same name as the selected IP item. Other values that can be picked are Not mapped; this option stops you from importing an item, or the name of an existing Petrel item. Likewise, exporting from Petrel to IP follows a similar method, but in reverse. A mapping template is simply a way to pre-define the mappings for items, and setting up a template will save you a lot of work on subsequent import and export actions. To define a Mapping Template click on the Edit button beside the template name selector. Within the Mapping Templates screen select the template that you wish to edit with the Select Template selector. Click on New to add new templates, on Delete to remove unwanted templates and on Save as to copy a template. To simplify data transfer between the two database structures, the IP plug-in for Petrel uses a Mapping template. There are several mapping types to choose from. The following mapping types are relevant during import:

11

1.

IP well -> Petrel well Allows you to define the IP well names that you expect to import and the equivalent Petrel well name that you wish to map to it. If the relevant Petrel well does not exist, a new well will be created with the Mapped to name.

Schlumberger Public

12

2. IP curve -> Global well log Allows mapping of imported IP curve names to the relevant Petrel Global Well Logs.

Schlumberger Public

13

3.

IP tops -> Horizons Allows mapping of imported IP zone names to relevant Petrel Horizons these are actually Petrel well tops.

Schlumberger Public

Each mapping must have the Use button ticked, otherwise it will be ignored. When exporting from Petrel to IP, the following mapping types are available: 1. Petrel well -> IP well Allows mapping of exported Petrel well names to the relevant IP well names. 2. Global well log -> IP curve Allows mapping of exported Petrel well logs to the relevant IP curve names.

The Mapping Template is not a well section template; you still have to select the items to import or export, the template simply removes the requirement to select the target to map each item to.

14

2.2.1. Duplicate mappings Duplicate mappings can occur as the IP and Petrel databases have different structures. IP allows curves to have the same name, due to the fact that curves are kept in different Sets; whereas Petrel has Global well logs, which tend to be generic names. This leads to conflicts in the mapping, as shown below. The transfer of data will still go ahead, even if you have not resolved the conflict; however, the last named IP well or curve will be the only one that is transferred to Petrel.

2.3. Export to Interactive Petrophysics

The Export to Interactive Petrophysics window allows you to export data from a Petrel project to an Interactive Petrophysics 3.3 database. The Export screen is similar to Import from Interactive Petrophysics and uses the same Mapping template mechanism. The Export form is subdivided into five main areas: 1. Database Location the Browse button allows you to find the relevant IP database to be exported from Petrel. Once a database location has been selected, it will be remembered for subsequent Imports and Exports. 2. Mapping it contains the following entries: Template name Specifies a Mapping Template to use for export. Mapping templates have been described earlier. IP curve set Selects the default IP Curve Set for all selected well logs to be exported. This can be overridden individually for each well log using its IP Curve Set selector. IP top set Selects the IP Tops Set that all selected zones will be exported to.

Schlumberger Public

3. Well Logs tab in the window in the lower left Shows which curves are to be exported to IP. 4. Zones tab in the window in the lower left Shows which zones will be exported to IP. 5. IP Database Preview window in the lower right Gives a preview of the IP database. The Mapping template is not a selection window. You will have to manually select the required wells and curves from the Petrel input window. However, if you have already mapped the wells and curves in the Mapping template, the Well logs tab will already have the IP well name and IP curve name.

15

You can view the selected wells, curves and zones in the Well logs and Zones tabs and in the IP database preview window.

Schlumberger Public

An alternative quick method of selecting wells and curves is to tick the Global well logs in the main Petrel explorer window you wish to export and the Wells box. This has the effect of selecting all the wells which have the relevant Global wells logs in them.

16

2.3.1. Well logs In the Well logs tab of the Export to Interactive Petrophysics database window you can view the selected Petrel well and curve name in the Source box. You can select the IP well name, Curve set and Curve name by either typing in the relevant box or using the drop-down menus. These are populated from the Mapping template or from the selected IP database. The IP curve set list is populated using the long curve set names.

Schlumberger Public

The IP curve short set names can only be four characters long. If you enter longer set names in the IP Curves Set box, the curve set name will be truncated.

17

2.3.2. Zones tab To populate the Zones tab you must select items in the correct order: 1. Select the Wells you wish to export. 2. Select the Stratigraphy collection you wish to export zones from. 3. Select the stratigraphic Horizons you wish to export. All the relevant zones contained within the Stratigraphy are then selected to all the wells that have those zones within them. In the Input window un-tick the zones and wells that are not relevant. You can map the IP well name using the drop-down list (if you have not done already so in the Mapping templates).
