How Our Process Works

Getting started on your road to recovery with Alcohol Rehab Asia! only takes a few simple steps: Fill out the email enquiry contact form here or contact us by telephone or email. Shortly thereafter Alcohol Rehab Asias Director will contact you to complete a confidential and comprehensive Initial Assessment and will answer any questions that you may have. Our no-obligation assessment comes at no cost to you. If required, we are able to coordinate your assessment and treatment options with your doctor or counsellor. During this process we will ask for some brief information about your drug or alcohol use in order to get a picture of your current circumstances and the expectations you have of Alcohol Rehab Asia! After careful review of your individual situation with you, we will determine if this is the right programme, and an arrival date will be arranged. If this is not the case, we will make every effort to find you another programme or counselling service. We can assist you with flight arrangements to Thailand and all other necessary travel arrangements and visas if necessary, depending on your agreed length of stay in Thailand. If your partner or family member is to be included, the additional fee will be determined and payment instructions given. Upon your arrival at Bangkoks International Airport (Suvarnabhumi Airport) you will be met by one of our staff and transported to Alcohol Rehab Asia!, to commence the programme. On completion of the program you will be transferred to the airport for your flight home, or within Thailand. Wherever you are, we will keep in contact with you via Skype, email, or phone for the first six months after you leave us. Where feasible we encourage past customers to attend a three day follow up weekend workshop at Alcohol Rehab Asia! These workshops are held every six months for a maximum of five participants only.

Alcohol Rehab Asia's! Principles:

1. Addiction itself is not a disease, but rather a learned behaviour that can be changed. However, addiction or dependency can contribute to significant physical or mental illness. 2. Addiction to alcohol or drugs is often a symptom of underlying issues that may include anxiety, depression, relationship problems, or work stress. 3. Rehabilitation has the best chance of success where people are given the opportunity to test out what they have learnt from their programme in a normal environment where the opportunity to use or drink again is quite high. 4. Relapse most often occurs when a person feels successful and motivated on completion of a rehab program but returns to the real world which may be unchanged and still unsafe. 5. Changing behaviour that is dysfunctional takes time. We encourage you to stay in touch after you return home. 6. Having realistic and practical strategies to deal with your addiction speeds up the recovery process. Commitment to change is hard, even if you are aware of the consequences of not changing. Changing friendships, social activities and work culture is often the most difficult part. 7. We take a holistic approach to addiction that assumes that health and wellbeing involves every aspect of your life including physical and mental health; it cannot be separated from relationships, work and lifestyle. We therefore take time to explore these areas and their impact on your health and behaviour. 8. We believe that our approach is very effective. However we constantly review what were doing and research other concepts and ideas.

Our Staff/Team: Lazar Bronstein

B.A. CQSW, ASW, MIPM. MAICW. Lazar is British and one of the most widely experienced mental health professionals in the world. With over 35 years working in four countries, he has been involved in drug and alcohol and mental health services in clinical, teaching, management, training, research and international development roles. Lazar has worked in both public and private sectors and for local and national NGOs. Throughout his career, Lazar has always maintained a counselling practice in addition to his other roles, and has specialised in the counselling of dual disorders including drug and alcohol, post-traumatic stress, depression, personality disorder and eating disorders. While Lazar respects the AA model, he believes that CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) with its emphasis on learned behaviours is more relevant to an understanding of addiction and its treatment. As a therapist, Lazar uses several approaches which include CBT, Gestalt, Brief Psychotherapy, Provocative Therapy, Family Therapy, Rogerian Counselling and Transactional Analysis. Lazar also uses different forms of relaxation, stress management and meditation techniques. As a long time student of Zen philosophy, he incorporates Zen concepts into his work. He has given many conference presentations in Australia and New Zealand, on addiction and mental health topics and was given a U.N. award for his work in East Timor. In addition to English, Lazar speaks basic Thai, French and Spanish. Lazar believes that an individuals determination to change addictive behaviours is the key to long-term recovery. But that change only happens when one can perceive that an addictionfree life is a worthwhile choice.

Concept:
The Alcohol Rehab Asia! approach to drug and alcohol addiction takes you through 4 main phases. In the first phase, you will have the opportunity to examine the recent events that have brought you to rehab. In the second phase, you will have time to explore in depth life issues and underlying factors that may still have a negative influence on your behaviour and lifestyle. In the third phase, you will re-examine your current values and start to develop strategies to re-organise your life without addiction. You will also have the chance to test out your commitment to change in a normal social environment. In the fourth phase, you will review the normalisation exercise and refine your post rehab recovery plan. If appropriate, your partner will be included in this process. The final phase is the ongoing review of your progress at home. Where possible, we will arrange with you support systems that may include AA meetings, or counsellors. Phase: I Debrief The first component follows a structured process that gives you time to explore what has happened recently in your life and brought you to rehab. The process allows you to distress, and understand your cognitive, emotional and behavioural responses to addiction, and to clarify your urgent objectives.

Phase: II Deconstruct In this component a comprehensive bio psychosocial assessment is completed that includes all aspects of your health as well as relationships, employment, and environmental factors. This allows us to identify unresolved past and current issues that may be contributing to your problems.

Phase: III Revalue Knowing what is important, what you value now, is essential as a guide to what life direction you may take and the changes that may need to be taken, to live up to your values. This structured process helps you to identify your values and examine any obstacles that prevent you from realising them. In this phase you will clarify your values and identify thinking behaviour that can be changed, in order to meet your values. You will also explore your motivation and the obstacles that prevent change.

Phase: IV Rebuild This component is concerned with developing a strategy to deal with your addiction that is practical, realistic, and achievable. We will also test out your readiness to change your behaviour by placing you in a normal community environment for a short time. We will then evaluate this experience and work on any difficulties that have arisen.

Phase: V Review This includes follow up arrangements for your contact with Alcohol Rehab Asia! after you have completed the programme. We are available 24/7 and will arrange regular Skype (R) or phone contact sessions during the six months post rehab. We encourage everyone who is able, to return to Alcohol Rehab Asia! for a follow up weekend after six months. These weekends are held twice a year.

What's Different About Us?

Our methods work where others may have failed. We help you to deal with underlying issues that may have been unresolved for many years. While there are common themes in our programme, this is not a one size fits all rehab. Being small, we can and do use a wide range of therapeutic interventions to suit each person.

We respect the efforts you have made to change your behaviour and dont judge you or label you as an addict. We are able to use a number of professional associates to help you with specific issues if requested. We work with other therapists and centres in Thailand and elsewhere. We will ensure you get the best possible help if our programme does not suit your needs. If you have a partner we encourage their active involvement in the last week in counselling sessions.

Thai Culture:
As our centre is in a rural location, you will have a chance to experience a part of Thailand that few tourists ever see. In addition to annual festivals of Loy Krathong and Songkran (Thai New Year) you may also see Chinese New Year, long boat racing (40 man crew), a local Thai wedding or a novice monk celebration. In fact if we get invited to anything, you will have the opportunity to come as well. You will get to meet some local Thais and join in making malai (jasmine garlands), paddy fishing, or fruit carving. People in this area are often very pleased to meet tourists and children sometimes want to practice their English with foreigners. As rural Thailand is more conservative than larger tourist centres, we ask that you are respectful of Thai customs in your behaviour and appearance. While there are no particular local customs, neat clothes and polite greetings will ensure a returned friendly smile.

Couples:
For many people in a relationship one partner may have alcohol/drug problems, while the other has not. The sober partner may try everything they can to stop you using/drinking. This may even include using with you, in an attempt to understand your behaviour. Some partners suffer incredible emotional and physical distress over many years hoping that you will change. The toll on families is very high and contributes to high divorce rates in many countries. We encourage you to work with your partner through the recovery process, so that you both may benefit from the positive changes you will make in your life.

If you are married or in a relationship we encourage your partner to attend counselling sessions with you during the last week of the programme. Many spouses/partners have watched the slow deterioration in your health and behaviour over the months and years. Often they feel powerless to change anything, and become frustrated and angry, but still hope that you will give up drugs or alcohol. While they may still be unsure about your ability to stop drinking/using, they are there to support you and work through your recovery, with you. While you may think that a month in rehab demonstrates commitment to change, and that your partner should accept this position, the changes you have made still have to be demonstrated and acted upon, so dont expect smooth sailing straight away. Both you and your partner need to get to know each other again, as you are now in a different relationship than before. Your children, if any, may also need reassurance that the old behaviours will not re-emerge. This part of recovery takes time, patience and commitment. Your ability to recognise early warning signs of a potential relapse and not to isolate yourself is all-important with your partner and family. We believe it is crucial to your recovery to let your partner tell their side of the story so that your relationship can change from one of tension and distrust, to one of care and support for each other. After all it is likely that your partner is going to be your best ally and friend throughout your recovery. While they may be angry and disappointed - theyre still hopeful and still in the relationship.

Accommodation:
At present, we have two comfortable cabins in the grounds of our house. Each cabin has airconditioning, TV, DVD player, refrigerator, wardrobe and bathroom. They were built to accommodate one couple in each, and are serviced daily. The internet air card can be used in your room or in the grounds. Internet connections are generally reliable, and we can access internet cafs in our nearest town, Baan Nok.

Activities/Excursions:
While being in rehab has a serious purpose we believe that relaxation time and fun is also important.

Our activities include:

Cycling through beautiful green rice fields in the early morning, or along the Ping River for a picnic. We also belong to an eccentric local cycling group of business people who take an early morning ride to a small village, have coffee and return home for breakfast. The terrain is flat and does not require a high level of fitness. We also have table tennis, archery and petanque. On the creative side you can learn how to make malai (jasmine garlands,) carve fruit, or learn the basics of Thai cooking. Local fishing in ponds and canals can be arranged.

Nakhon Nayok is located in the centre of Thailand, which gives us good access to several national parks, the ancient cities of Sukkothai and Ayuttaya as well as local temples and markets. If you are photographer there is a wide range of subjects, including migrating birds, temples inside caves, a large freshwater lake, and seasonal activities such as boat racing, Chinese and Thai festivals and rural life which is still quite traditional.

Food:
We like food. We also take seriously the idea that combinations of different food groups have varying effects on emotions, concentration, energy, work performance and physical health. In our experience, many people with addiction problems have neglected their diets and often lack adequate nutrition. Simple adjustments to diet and nutrition can make a huge difference to energy levels and overall wellbeing. At Alcohol Rehab Asia! we advocate a healthy lifestyle diet with the emphasis on a balanced intake of the major food groups. We also believe that choice is essential, so we do not advocate a particular regime non-vegetarian, vegetarian or vegan. However, we can generally cater for individual preferences and we will ask you about your food preferences in the initial interview. We are not a 5-star resort but we do provide a range of western and Thai dishes, using fresh ingredients, vegetables and fruit, sometimes grown on our land or from the adjacent forest. If you are interested we will encourage you to come shopping at the local markets and help prepare some meals.

Exercise:
Like food and attention to diet, regular exercise is a part of the programme. Exercise options include: walking or jogging, around the lanes and rice fields or on our indoor walking machine; early morning cycling, cycling excursions; and/or daily use of the outdoor gym. We encourage clients to exercise for basic fitness and health, but not to excess, which can create new addictive behaviours. During the first week of your stay, we will devise a simple daily exercise routine that will focus on breathing, aerobic fitness and flexibility. Regular exercise benefits everyone, and many people in recovery find that a simple enjoyable routine helps maintain positive motivation each day.

Climate/Weather:
Nakhon Nayok, like much of Thailand, can be quite hot during the months of February to May, just before the wet season, with temperatures around 33 degrees Celsius. The wet season from May to September is a little cooler, helped by rain in the afternoon and evening. The cool season is also dry, from October to mid February with temperatures of 2530 degrees Celsius, and is like spring in more moderate climates. Early mornings are beautiful and quiet and its the best time for a morning walk or cycle ride.

What is Costs:
By far the most important cost of our rehab programme is your own commitment to understand and change your behaviour. The standard cost of our program is US$25,000 per 28 days stay. This is fully inclusive of airport transfers, accommodation, all meals, laundry and most excursion costs. In certain circumstances the cost for your program may be reduced. The only costs not included are phone calls, personal shopping expenses, personal insurance and any medical checkups or treatment. The actual cost will be reduced proportionally if your stay is less than 28 days. If your partner is included in the final week an additional change based on the standard fee will be levied dependant on the number of days they stay. We believe that our programme is one of the most affordable anywhere in the world, and offers you the highest possible client-counsellor ratio of any other rehab facility. We are committed to high standards. Information about you including our free confidential initial assessment of your circumstances will not be divulged to any third party, without your permission. All fees are payable in advance. Bank transfer details will be provided prior to your arrival. While it is unlikely that you will need much spending money, most purchases in Thailand are done on a cash basis so you should ensure that you are able to withdraw funds from an ATM. ATMs are widely available in our region, and throughout Thailand.

Location:
Alcohol Rehab Asia is located in Nakhon Nayok, one of the most unspoilt rural provinces of Thailand. It is about 3 hours drive north of Bangkok, in Central Thailand, and offers rich agricultural landscapes, picturesque river views, spectacular caves, national parks, waterfalls, and arguably the best food in Thailand. As a visitor, you will have the rare opportunity to experience true traditional Thai culture and festivals not seen by many tourists. It is also well-located for short visits to Chiang Mai, Sukhotai, and the Burmese Border in Northern Thailand. Access to modern conveniences is available as Alcohol Rehab Asia! is only 30 minutes away from the thriving capital city of Nakhon Nayok, which boasts a big shopping complex with modern shops and supermarkets. There are several good private hospitals in Nakhon Nayok. We are only 10 minutes away from Baan Nok, which is a large market town with most conveniences including 7/11 stores, pharmacies, doctors and a hospital. We also offer and excellent Stop Smoking Guide.
