1.

SCOPE This document covers the venting and draining of all process and utility piping, for the purpose of process operating, high and low point locations and pressure testing. This method does not apply to lined pipe work, which shall be treated separately.

2.

PHILOSOPHY This is based on the minimum cost combined with acceptable engineering practice. The standard philosophy is intended for used of normal petrochemical types plant and shall only be deviated from where the contract requires that the clients standards and philosophy apply.

3.

CATEGORIES OF VENTS AND DRAINS 3.1. There a re three main categories of vent (V) and drain (DR), see table below : Category Process Operating Used For Information Service

Process operating functions during Indicated on P & I Diagram control of t he plant while on stream or during start-up or shut down Note : Full details must be shown on P & I Diagram procedure Filling, draining, purging or Physical locations are shown on the flushing out pipelines while the piping GA/ 3D Model/ Isometrics plant or part of the plant is off Note : When equipment is vented stream for drained via the pipeline, vents and drains shall be shown on P & ID Pressure testing connections Physical locations are shown on the provided specially for this purpose piping GA/ 3D Model/ Isometrics only where the high or low point connections cannot be utilised

NOTES ON TABLES OF STANDARDASSEMBLIES Type 1 Type 2 Type 3 Used primarily for testing, Cap or plug to be seal welded where screwed connections are unacceptable for mechanical reasons. Used for testing mainly where screwed connections are not acceptable for corrosive reasons. Used for non-operating functions - blanked off for the following reasons:Provides secondary seal in case of accidental opening of valve Provides secondary seal in case of valve leakage. Provides protection for valve outlet against physical damage and ingress of foreign matter. Screwed plugs or caps used as part of the assembly shall be of equivalent material and rating as the construction of main line Type 4 Type 5 Used for non-operating functions, on high pressure lines where a flange is preferred to a screwed fitting as a positive form of blanking Used for "Process Operating" functions where a single valve is acceptable. The assembly is unblanked to make it usable by an operator without recourse to a fitter for removal of the blanking (plug, cap, flanges). Used for "Process Operating" functions where two valves are essential as a safeguard. The assembly is unblanked to make it usable by an operator without recourse to a fitter for removal of the blanking (Plug, Cap, Flange). Mainly used for high pressure lines.

APPLICATION 7.1. In the following table, the numbers 1, 2, 3 etc. are used as a means of designating the type of assembly. For example a vent of Type 3 is designed as V3. (Bracketed numbers refer to notes listed in 8.2 below) : Vent or Drain Description of Fluid (*) Steam - Superheated (no vents required unless for testing) Steam - Saturated Steam - Condensate Cooling Water Process Water Demineralised (Treated Water) Range Process Operating High or Low Point Type 3 Testing Type 1

This table does not cover lined pipe On high pressure (900 # rating and above) toxic service, it is considered essential to blank off vent and drain to safeguard personnel and leakage. Fluids of this type freeze the valve when operating to atmospheric temperatures above 29oC. Therefore double valved assemblies are used for operating purposes, with 600 mm minimum between valves. On crevice corrosive services, where screwed or socket weld valves are not permitted, use the flanged assembly. Due to flammable nature of the fluid, a double valved assembly will be used on 600 # rating and above. Must be detailed on P & ID, not standarised.

Notes :

3. 4. 5. 7.2.

When deciding the type of assembly to be used on a pipeline, consideration shall be given also to the testing to be carried out. Where lines are to be tested using the flowing medium the following recommendations apply : Gas lines do not require vents or drains.

Liquid lines require normal testing vents and drains. Superheated steam lines require start-up drains only

GENERAL NOTES (ALSO SEE APPENDIX 1) 8.1. 8.2. 8.3. 8.4. 8.5. Vents shall be placed on top of pipes at their highest points. Drains shall be placed on bottom of pipes at their lowest points. Vents and drains shall normally point directly up or down as the case may be, but where room is limited they may be turned through 90o with the valve in the horizontal position. Test vents and drain shall only be provided where other connections such as temperatures, pressure or normal high and low point vent and drain connections cannot be utilised. Locations where considerations should be given to vents and drains. 8.5.1. 8.5.2. 8.5.3. 8.5.4. 8.5.5. 8.5.6. 8.6. Adjacent to or on valve bodies for winterisation. Adjacent to spades or spectacle blinds. On pipe that are jacketed. Adjacent to control valves. Pipework serving to vent or drain a vessel. Strainers (where vent or drain is not integral with unit).

Piped Vents and Drains 8.6.1. 8.6.2. 8.6.3. Superheated steam drains shall be piped away to safeguard the operator when opening the valve. All other vents and drains required for process operation will be indicated on the line diagram. Drains that are required to be piped away shall be designed so that the end of the pipe is visible from the operating valve.
